People who said this one-shot has just some references from Chainsaw Man (CSM) but is his own thing definitely forgot some parts of the manga. This one-shot is basically the introduction arc for Power (the red-horned girl from CSM). Her cat has been kidnapped by the bat devil and she didn’t care about hurting people to save it. DDMark just mixed it with a bit of Denji’s early “lifestyle”. I mean she lives in a garbage dump. However, in Power’s case, the reason why she cares so much about her cat and why she is ready to do anything to save it has been well explained. Power is the blood devil. She was used to kill anything (animal or human) to drink their blood. Nevertheless, when she met the cat, it was starving but she was ready to kill it when it will become big enough. To her great surprise, she started caring for this cat as she spent more time with it. Why? Because this living cat provides her what she was subconsciously looking for when drinking blood… Warmth. This alone made Power relatable. In DDMark’s one-shot, as you said, readers don’t know why the main character cares that much about her cat and if we don’t, why should we care? I really think DDMark (and many writers nowadays) forgot that most of the people who have written great stories tend to experiment life first. They suffered in real life, overcame their struggles and provided their own unique solutions in their story to problems they faced, through extrapolation. Without it, unfortunately, authors like DDMark will just keep copying solutions already provided by other authors because they haven’t experimented life in any meaningful way and therefore they didn’t found their own unique solutions they could express to the world. It’s sad. Anyways, great video Muzi. Keep going!
