Rain fell like static across the city skyline. She stood alone on the rooftop — tall, unwavering, framed by neon and storm. Vera Locke, codename: Echo. A ghost in the agency’s files. A specialist in terminal decisions.

Her pistol rose slowly, her eyes narrowed through the storm. The target was in sight. One breath in.

She never fired.

The shot came from elsewhere — a red gleam, a whisper of betrayal, and then the impact. The bullet struck her dead-center, piercing through heart and armor alike. The silence that followed was louder than thunder.

She staggered, knees slamming into wet concrete, a hand pressing hard to the wound as blood bloomed beneath her leather suit. The pain was nothing. The betrayal — everything.

Her grip on the pistol never loosened.

Refusing to fall, she stayed upright for a moment longer, fury smoldering in her chest. Her face turned skyward, jaw clenched. For a heartbeat more, she defied the inevitable.

Then came the fall.

Her body collapsed sideways in slow motion, striking the rooftop with a hollow thud. Rain mixed with blood. Neon light flickered off the puddles growing around her. Her weapon lay nearby, untouched. Useless.

But Vera was not finished.

With one final breath, her back arched violently — a spasm, a refusal, a silent scream into the void. Her chest rose high, then dropped, never to rise again.

She lay still.

Eyes open, wide, and frozen — staring straight through the storm and into the soul of the city that abandoned her.

The comms were silent.

No rescue. No backup. No last words.

Transmission lost.
