Last Stand at the Chalet (Patreon)

The chalet was supposed to be a sanctuary, the end of the line. Agent Anya Petrova, known as "Winter," let the fire's heat wash over her. She had finally shed her heavy outer gear, the mission's suffocating weight lifting with it. The intel was secure. It was done.
A single floorboard groaned behind her.
It was a sound that did not belong. Anya spun, her hand a blur as it grabbed the pistol she had placed on the mantel.
He was already there, a ghost stepping from the doorway's shadow. Not a rival operative. It was Markov. Her handler. His own weapon was level, his hand steady.
"You were a loose end, Anya," he said. His voice was not the warm, familiar tone of her mentor, but the flat, cold voice of an executioner.
Her gun was coming up. "Markov... why?" she breathed.
His pistol flashed, the sound deafening in the vaulted room. A sudden, searing heat punched into her, high on her abdomen, just below her sternum. The pain was a violation, stealing her breath.
A gasp tore from her throat. She looked down, shocked, at the dark blood blossoming just below her bra. She fought to stay standing, but her legs betrayed her, sending her stumbling to her knees on the cold marble floor. The world tilted.
But she was "Winter." She was not done.
With a final, defiant surge of adrenaline, she raised her own pistol. Her arm trembled, her vision blurring, but she tried to find his silhouette against the dark room.
The second shot was a deafening crack, a final clap of thunder that seemed to shake the very foundations of the chalet. This one was different. A profound, crushing weight slammed into her, dead center, right between her breasts. The fatal shot.
The strength vanished from her body. Her fingers went numb, and her weapon skittered away, useless on the polished stone. She fell backward, her head hitting the floor with a dull thud.
She was on the ground, the cold marble a shock against her skin. Then, a violent, involuntary spasm seized her. Her back arched sharply where she lay, lifting her torso high off the floor. It was a final, agonizing protest from a body betrayed, every muscle locked in a silent scream as the fatal wound tore her life away.
Just as quickly, the tension broke. She slammed back down onto the stone.
Her hands moved, desperately and weakly, clutching at her chest as if to hold herself together, to stop the life that was pouring from her. She felt the world narrow, her hearing fading, until all that was left was the thudding, erratic beat of her own heart. Each pulse was a hammer blow, then a flutter, then... nothing. A profound stillness spread from her core.
The fireplace flames danced in her vision, blurring into a warm, hazy light. A last, shallow, hot breath escaped her parted lips in a faint cloud. Markov's footsteps receded, sharp and merciless. His shadow was the last thing she ever saw.
