After spending this month discussing billionaires and grifters, Mrs. Pearlmania's research eye turned to the laborers of the Gilded Age and their quest to enshrine the 40 hour work week into law. Spoiler alert! It took DECADES to make 8 hours the norm for American workers.

This free wheeling history on the 8 hour work day has it all, Noble Knights, class wars, dark turns, betrayals, and candid talk about how you are worth a lot more than you are being paid. IT'S TOO MANY TABS!

Ughh I hate the "I don't like paying so much for union dues" thing from people who are already paid pretty well. I had to have this conversation with a friend recently. She and several of her colleagues were mad about the way the union negotiated their contract this past year so they decided to leave the union. They don't have a closed shop so they're able to benefit from what the bargaining unit does for them without becoming a part of it, which I think is bullshit. I tried to explain to her how this is exactly the behavior that weakens the union and how the real solution is to join the leadership and get involved in bargaining for the next round, but it didn't go in. This person literally has a PhD. Extremely fucking disappointing at best.

The best autumnal activity is having a bonfire while watching scary movies on the projector. I met Alex at the Indy show last weekend. I was three margaritas deep before 6pm and by myself. I am not usually a drinker 😅. I’m sure I was awkward 🤣🤣 The show was awesome!!!

Yo I work in a very labor intensive hospitality operation and for years (and various companies both big corporate and smaller private stuff) the drive has been to completely remove overtime. Like over staffing just to keep people at 32 hours. It’s very real.

I worked for Disney Online for four years. In that time, I fought cancer while my wife delivered an awesome little girl. My managers could give a shit. They constantly complained that my numbers were not adequate. Apparently their spreadsheets didn’t account for the long battle of chemo and eventual radical surgery. They bitched about my paternity leave too. All of my bosses were divorced and had very little contact with their kids, and I was expected to mimic their example. I said fuck that. I clocked out at six and ignored emails until the next day. After surviving four rounds of layoffs, they eventually cut me loose. Worst four years of my career. Mickey Mouse can go fuck himself!

Flight Attendant and new Patreon member here! Thank you for talking about my job! The entire aviation industry needs a fix. Employees aren’t making living wages and passengers are being stranded without compensation; meanwhile, airline CEOs are millionaires. The more “progressive airlines” are now paying FAs 50% of our wages during boarding. As if we only put in 50% of effort during that time? It’s insane. My airline currently does not pay me until the boarding door closes. Even worse, I’m paid in “miles”. Won’t say the name of the airline but IYKYK. Due to the nature of the job, overtime doesn’t kick in after 8 hours for us. With my current contract, we receive overtime after 12 1/2 hours. Yes, our work day can be over 12 1/2 hours. We also do not get lunch breaks, etc. We are considered “essential” but did not get hazard pay during COVID, and many of my co-workers that are new are living in their cars. Fun fact: most US airlines also don’t pay for the two months or more of training prior to going online. Essential but not essential enough to deserve a living wage. Any time you fly, please give feedback to the airline (doesn’t matter which one) that the FAs deserve to be paid from the moment they step on the plane at the start of a trip to the moment they step off at the end of a trip. Tell the airlines that the FAs deserve well above a living wage since they are responsible for SAVING YOUR LIFE in an emergency (be it medical, evacuation, or otherwise). The best thing you can do for us is threaten to fly a different airline if the airline you’re currently flying does not pay their FAs well. Money in their pockets is all that matters to them. Thank you for being so pro-union, and thank you AGAIN for mentioning our struggle. You and Mrs P are my feel good podcast when I’m in my hotel room alone (as I often am on work trips). You guys rock!
