This is a comedy history podcast where two community college educated parents do their own research about a specific topic and then share it with each other while making jokes. This week's topic is abolitionist John Brown. The episode covers aspects of John Brown's life and work to end slavery in the United States of America, including work with the underground railroad, actions in Kansas, and his raid on the armory at Harper's Ferry.

WatchedOneYTbecauseYouLookLikeMySon_StayedForTheContent

Thanks for the shout out! Glad it made the last year worth it … and Mrs P, thank you for all of your content as well :-) And one of the people commenting captures how I feel - caught up and now sad.

Kayla_from_delaware

Can’t wait to see you here in DE. My home state, that I lovingly refer to as *the armpit of the coast*.

✨Sparkling Misandry✨

Bob Ferguson is the governor of Washington! I hope it's the same one, if so, Bob you need to get up in these comments and learn some shit Start getting a little more militant in working against these fascists. Sincerely, A Constituent

supersaiyansquirrel

Hell yeah! So glad we're finally doing John Brown. Been waiting for this one

WintrStonr

I haven’t even started the episode but I’m SO pumped, me and my partner were in a John Brown Gun Club unit in east hollywood for a while. I’ve been waiting for this for AGES

Mrs.PoopFeet

HIIIIII "If {husband} is Poop Feet are you Mrs Poop?" "No I'm Mrs. Feet"

Mrs.PoopFeet

Same babe. Started in November and mainlined the exclusive content in 3 days. 🥹

Pelicans are my favorite dinosaur

Bob Ferguson is WA's governor! At least the same name. I needed your show today. I was in a BlueSky argument which is giving a new meaning to Turf (TERF) war. I'm so sick of the tired, WRONG, anti-trans arguments. Ugh!

simplebrute

not me listening to this episode while driving through southeast Kansas (💪). aside from the murder stigma for the Pottawatomie Massacre, John Brown was (and still is) denounced as mentally unwell or unstable by his critics. most of the evidence suggests he was troubled by the violence he engaged in, was moved spiritually by the scripture he quoted (which even impressed his adversaries), but mostly that he was a white man willing to kill other white men for black people. an element lost in passage of time is the abolitionist movement wasn't always an emancipation effort. a number of the Kansas jayhawkers were against enslavement but a good deal didn't want slaves in the territory, not just to compete with free labor but a more white supremacist idea of who deserved to be on the land. John Brown was an enigma to these people, risking his life to reunite a family to be split up at auction, gathering them and escorting them to Canada. to them this was nutty. anyway, always punch a Nazi

Rookie

Yumyumyumyumyum I love them tacos!

jessimightpanic

I want a porch goose. I'm on Mrs. Pearlmania's side on this one.

Redacted for Fun

I probably should have commented here first, but here we are. Loved this episode, and my sister cheered when I put it on because she admires John Brown a lot. Speaking of the sistercritter, she has been loving all of your theme music & has started trying to imitate the "allegedly" soundbite whenever she feels appropriate in day to day conversation about the household. Also also - I probably missed it somewhere, but if there's room for another book on the book club queue, I heartily recommend Hunger Pangs by Joy Demorra.

PumpkinKing008

I was gonna say we need more episodes like this about actual good human beings but judging how Alex was super hyped by the end (and not tired and depressed about learning about assholes) I can see why Mrs. P doesn't do them that often. 😆

Lorelana

Not me listening to this while playing Powerwash Simulator lmao Yum, yum, yum, yum, yum! I love them tacos!

Pelicans are my favorite dinosaur

A neighbor of mine has one and when it's got on the yellow rain slicker and matching hat, it's so cute, I can hardly stand it. Don't get me started on its Easter costume 🦆 🐇

Alex’s Last Braincell, Queef

*White Kansan pro-Slaver as a beautifully bearded man sprints at him in the dead of night wielding a hot-barreled musket before getting his throat ripped* Yum, yum, yum, yum, yum! I love them tacos!

Mr.PearlsFootFungus

Whoever made their name about “the game” I hate you and you’ve made me lose trust in safely listening to the shoutouts

Endac

Another good start to the week binging last week's content. Thanks for making me feel a little less insane these days.

Jessipoot

RIP to the GOAT Also I was not expecting the rich internet culture of porch geese and the sheer amount of outfits you can purchase for those damn things. It kinda makes me want to make a porch rabbit or something. Also also I adopted a rabbit named Fabio this weekend. He looks like the model.

DamnYouVodka

ALEX BRUH YOU TALKED ABOUT THE GAME 😭😭😭😭😭😭

Leigh-Ann Florence

I haven't heard my shout out yet. But I still love you guys.

shmelbyyy

I've been reading a book about John Wilkes Booth, and this was impeccable timing since I just joined 3 days ago! I read about John Brown's public execution so it was nice hearing the beginning of his life rather than just the sad ending lol

Rhysand_beans

I literally just put the leprechaun outfit on mine. Highly recommend it’s a delightful side hobby lol

jessimightpanic

This is the best username I've ever seen.

OneGoodKnight

Wearing a John Brown Hunting Club sweatshirt while opening up Patreon this morning makes me believe that this will be a good week.

KAMacher1991

Mrs. P! If you want to hear more about “the game,” I’ll plug one of my other favorite podcasts, American Hysteria! There’s a whole episode on it! And RIP to the goat

KAMacher1991

And have some yum yum yum tacos after!

Desantis’s.Sleep.Paralysis.Demon.

Yum yum yum I love them tacos! I too would feel rage if my husband was playing power wash simulator when there's real life stuff to clean. Mrs. P. You would most assuredly be acquitted.

Paige Morgan

NOT THE GAME 😂😂😂 she’s only known peace, why tell Mrs P about it 😭

April Merritts

RIP to the GOAT! Yum yum yum I love them tacos! (Also, still waiting on the Lion King lore-dump!)

m

RIP to the GOAT Yum yum yum I love 'dem tacos I have been telling my students every year how much I want this 4' tall rubber chicken for my classroom. I would dress that thing up just like a porch goose. I would MAKE it clothes if I had to. Sadly, they have not bought me a 4' tall rubber chicken yet.

S.K.

The Game is like fae rules. You lose by perceiving it. lol.

Demolition Dormouse

YumyumyumyumyumIlovethemtacos! Also, as a former kid with a life-sized goose night light, decorative geese are underrated.

Kristen Cocciante

Lmao I’m literally playing power wash simulator while listening to this (there’s a new Wallace and gromit dlc) and everyone in my family has the exact same response as Mrs P when hearing about this game 🙃 it’s not about cleaning, Alex gets it 🫡 😂

Lovexash

-.- it’s been a couple years since I lost the game

Sly Cooper

RIP to the 🐐! Yum yum yum yum yum I love them 🌮

GinaBoBina

RIP to the 🐐!! Yum yum yum yum I love them tacos! How am I just learning that there is a power wash simulator game! Awesome!!

Chel Parson

I will never forget John Brown solely because in high school I had to do a presentation on him and the raid on Harper's Ferry...did the whole presentation with the assumption that Harper's Ferry was a boat. So we finish our presentation and after a long pause our APUSH teacher goes "yeah...so you know Harper's Ferry wasn't a boat right?" So thanks Pearlmania gang for reviving that fun memory 🤣

Bubsey_Wubsey_Has_No_Hair

“Never argue with people that John Brown would have shot” <— my next tattoo. THANK YOU Mrs. P!!!

illuminaughty

Truly honored that the library drive made it to the shoutouts of an episode about THE John Brown 😅 🫶 please come to Pittsburgh soon, Pearlmans!

Papa Palpatine

Hearing Osawatomie pronounced like that cracked me up as someone from Kansas. (Oh-Suh-Waht-Oh-Mee) The running joke in middle school was that someone would say it and you’d hit them “Oh swat uh me”.

HereForMrs.P

Get this woman a Lawn Goose for Mother's Day!!

mr. buttons

literally am playing powerwash simulator while listening to this

I_Lost_The_Game

RIP to the goat. Sorry Mrs. P! I was hoping that Mr. P wouldn't have explained rules. This is not a fun game. Also my wife loves you. Mr. P keep yelling into the void, one of us has to. Yum, yum, yum, yum, yum! I love them tacos.

CheeseDizMilk

RIP GOAT!!! *alarm nose* Crazy that i lived near this man, and only ever learn about it through you all..... WHOOO thanks Fredericksburg, VA county public school. <3 yum yum yum yum yum!!! i definitely love me some tacos ;P

Soup.4.The.Pearlmans

FYI I “got in trouble” with my granny at my family’s Easter this year for saying “I don’t argue with people John Brown would’ve shot.” Worth it.

CeddyRick

Alex said "Daddy wants you to fix it" at the end of the episode I was listening to on Spotify and so I had to resubscribe to tell him, as a Daddy, it felt odd hearing it not coming from my mouth. Also, I don't like that I pay for Spotify, but ads, so take my five bucks

Deafleader

It’s hard to raise parents 🤣

Deafleader

It’s gamified and about being oddly satisfying, agreeeeed
