Mr. and Mrs. P return to the christian movie guide to see what MAGA thinks of their favorite  (and least favorite) musicals. From Sweeney Todd, A Star is Born, Moulin Rouge!, Chiago to the Sound of Music, Les Mis and of course The Greatest Showman. It goes exactly as you would expect, hilarious, enraging and sometimes downright confusing.

Mam I missed you guys but I’m mostly fully healed from my torn meniscus (fuck workers comp btw)

I'm finally on vacation and I made it out of the post office on Saturday without my postmaster being able to cancel my leave like she had threatened to do earlier in the week! I blocked all three management phone numbers and won't be unblocking them until my leave is over!

ScrambledPhoenixEggs

OK, but staying in a hotel, ordering room service, and watching a long film sounds like a fantastic home away from home vacation! Legit sold!

Traveled out of state to visit friends and go watch Wicked, but they kept us up all night fighting while we "slept" on the guest bed too drunk after game night to leave. Split as soon as we could the next morning. Those friends never made it past the engagement and now whenever I see a poster or whatnot for the show I instantly get a powerful ick remembering being trapped listening to the dissolution of a relationship of two dear friends. Don't think I'll ever see it. 😬

I'd just like to say, SpongeBob WOULD NEVER. Ethan Slater WISHES he was as good a person as SpongeBob is (yes he's a sponge but you know what I mean)

Bubsey_Wubsey_Has_No_Hair

Okay but NOW I absolutely HAVE to watch A Star is Born just because the conservatives hate it. And also I love Our Queen, Lady Gaga. 🥰❤️

Katrina_McBean_Kerfuffle_Kween

Speaking of a baz luhrmann production... I was raised jehovah's witness. For a teen movie night for myself n some friends I picked 1996's PG-13 romeo + juliet. During the "sex scene" that consisted of rapidly talking under a fluttering sheet. One of the dad's (an elder 🙄) objected. I was like calm down they're married & this fucker said NOT IN REAL LIFE. He can go eat a whole bag of dicks. I was trying to be good within the bullshit framework of rules given to me by a cult & still got called out. 🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼

It's crazy that you did a whole episode on musicals and you've never seen Hello Dolly 😳

The Trans Agenda (Bucky)

I'm literally the same as Mr. P about not watching/reading a LOT of popular stuff but just knowing about it because it's referenced in everything. Ive also never seen Wicked, or the Wizard of Oz (well maybe as a child but I don't remember). Never seen movies like the Godfather but I too know about it bc of the way shows like Family Guy reference it 🤣 also never read Moby Dick, never read or watched Pride and Prejudice. I could go on. It's the autism and like this mental block I'll get with some stuff. When I watch something it has to be because I genuinely want to and I'm in the mood for new content. It's rare cause I'm almost always watching re-runs of comfort shows. And I just don't even any interest in the above mentioned stories. I'm not going to watch something purely because it's super well known. I need more reasons than that and sometimes it's the dumbest little thing that changes my mind

President of the Fishbein Fan Club

We tried to watch Matilda with our 4 year old and had to turn it off…. I did not recall that the first 2/3 of it was child abuse.

In Wicked, there are some animals that are sentient and can speak. They are referred to as (capital A) Animals. One of the main plot points is that Elohaba sticks up for the Animals, against the government of Oz that wants to silence and oppress them. This, as well as her true grasp of magic, puts her at odds with the Wizard, who paints her as a wicked witch

Ross Rolled

I know it’s impossible really want to see one of these reviewers and Alex to both watch Jesus Christ Superstar and have a debate review.

maxton

"silly looking drag queens" HAS to become someone's new drag name lol

Purple_Nurple

I watched it once, and once was enough. It was an ok movie with excellent vocals (the music wasn’t my flavor, but it was absolutely well done), but the story was SO hard to watch. 🥲 watch it when you need a good cry.

maxton

I LOVE Greatest Showman. It's one of my top 5 fave movies. I refused to listen to last week's pod about it because I'd like to continue loving it. It helped me through a really hard time, and I'm chosing to remain blind.

Lisa Paglicci

The character you’re thinking of in Wicked is Fiyero Tigelaar. Or, Johnathan Bailey AKA Anthony Bridgerton AKA named sexiest man alive by people magazine. Who could blame men and women for swooning over the King of Yearning?

Mrs_Viola_Swamp

I’ve never seen the movie either! But the mention of the movie brought back a deep dark memory of my friend’s mom buying us matching PJs and making us sing “My Favorite Things” for the school talent show in elementary school…. 😧 Now that I know what the movie is about, I’m even more horrified because her husband was Jewish.

Eleanor Yeomans

Y’all talking about Mama Mia reminded me of this wild plan I made when I was 16: when I get married, my mother and her friends have to come up with an elaborate performance to ‘Super Trouper’. This is the only way that she will not be micromanaging all of my wedding planning decisions, is if she is working on costume change laden dance routine

Lauren Jane

No fiddler on the roof - but no pivot to An American Tail?! It's the kids version of Fiddler (and haunts my daily existential crises)

Shut_Up_I'm_Fabulous

I *highly* recommend you rent the hotel room and watch the two Wicked movies vs seeing the play. I loathe the play version, and never planned to watch the movie (even though I adore Cynthia Erivo) but some Broadway friends talked me into it. It’s phenomenal! Especially when you know that the sets are pretty much practical, so there really are that many tulips (watch to see what I mean 😉). Two fun facts: Jamie Campbell Bower was in Sweeney Todd. That right! Vecna himself. And you were talking about Jennifer Grey (nobody puts baby in a corner). Her father, Joel Grey, was the Master of Ceremonies in the movie Cabaret. It’s all connected…

Tri-Sarah-tops

I really disliked the sound of music and is one of the main reasons I refuse any movie older than me

Brittaney Phillips

Ok to be fair, I've only seen the sound of music 1 time and it was after I watched The Pacifier and that was the play the son wanted to be in lol

Nikki Ann

Honestly thanks for the spoiler on A Star is Born. I watched most of it years ago and never finished it. Now I don’t have to.

Sara_the_Bookworm

When Grease came back into the theaters in the 90s I went with my brownie troop to see the movie! I remember our showing was almost empty except for two other people besides my troop. We were very sad about it because the adults told us we could sing and dance in the aisles if we were the only people in the theater. But yeah I can't believe that all the adults were like "yeah they don't know what's going on soooo it's fine".

Purple_Nurple

Just here to say that TSwift had exactly ONE movie that wasn’t bad, but in fairness it was voice work only. That movie is The Lorax.

Red Moon

Yo they don’t have Rocky Horror on their website, but I assume that if they did watch it they’d have a heart attack and die

Red Moon

Ah shit I commented before finishing the episode But it still stands I’d pay to see them react to RHPS

_Eternally_Possum_

I assume they didn't have Rent on the website because it's older (or just full of so much sin and debauchery that the reviewers just exploded) and that Mrs.P put the kibosh on Across the Universe because she hates the Beatles

AugieLovesPenny

I went to the Movieguide to look up my evangelical sister’s favorite movie: Furiosa. The whole things reads like a preacher asked ChatGPT to describe the movie.

Amber Marrano

I’m convinced that the way movies casted adults to play children is the reason millennials all believe they look young. I’m turning 40 this year and I am genuinely convinced I could pull off a “Never Been Kissed” undercover mission as a believable high schooler.

slfunk

What I find super hilarious about the Cats! review is that the musical historically is without a plot and more conceptual. For the movie version, they had to *try* to make some semblance of a plot so it felt logical. That all said, leave it to Christians to ascribe a "redemptive message" to anything without an actual plot. No plot, no problem, it's a redemptive tale.

Europoopin

Love the Electric 6 reference. Granted that's the only song of theirs I know but still! 😎🤣

Gemma Gallucci

Cats is god AWFUL but Cats Jellicle Ball is AMAZING. It made me cry twice, it made me give a shit about Cats for the first time ever, and most importantly it actually makes Cats make sense (as long as you’re privy to the Harlem ballroom scene). If not, watch Paris Is Burning first, cry and feel reborn, then go see Jellicle Ball and do it all again.

a lesbian with a sword

if you would allow me to be vulnerable for a minute, i used to be utterly terrified of the musical cats. when i was growing up one of the movies that we had on VHS was the Barney's Great Adventure and on the tape before the movie there was a commercial (?) for cats and it was so scary that little 2 year old me would have nightmares about that preview and it made me afraid of the physical tape itself even though i loved the Barney movie. when the cats movie came out in 2019 and i saw the commercials for it they unlocked those childhood memories and i had THE SAME NIGHTMARES all over again

a lesbian with a sword

and after googling it, Barney's Great Adventure is also a musical. it better have 4 stars on movieguide.org
