I used to loooooove digging holes. Our playgrounds were primarily sand, so we were all digging holes. Only, we were in Florida, so the holes could only be like maybe a foot deep before we hit water. I'm writing this right as Alex is calling us out on writing paragraphs about childhood memories digging holes :|

Lethall422

It’s 12:15 and I already bought a tote 👜🫶🏻

The other Jenna

I used to love digging holes as a kid but I think that’s also why I love gardening as an adult lol

Mars Capone

The way I'm going to be at the Denver show tonight and now want a Compost The Rich shirt SO BAD - I know it's likely not gonna be at the merch table since it's not TMT, but DAMN that's cute. 😅😭

tach.o

If you have game pass for Xbox there is a game where you literally just dig a hole. That’s it. That’s the game. My boys LOVE it

WhateverTheHeckThisIs

Just pressed play and had to jump on immediately to say how good Mrs. P looks this episode. The hair, the makeup, the merch, absolute fire.

gummysquee

The link to the tote works, but if I go to the Too Many Tabs home page I cant find the design on the shirts and stuff? Is it just me?

✨Sparkling Misandry✨

Ok, this is the merch I need so badly! I love the green. But have some mercy on a menopausal antifascist and give it to me in a flowy tank situation. Or at least a premium blend tee so I can cut it up 😆 I just get so hot and sweaty lol 🫠

Alex and Rachel Trautman

Hehe, I know scrips are horrible, but all I could hear was the Deep Rock Galactic dwarves saying scrrrrrip in a silly way when they earn one. For anyone that doesn't know, DRG is about dwarves mining an alien planet and being sacrificed to alien bugs on said planet for the company to get minerals. Definetly not like any of this story at aaaaaaall... /s

Pearlmania500

I just sent in a request to the designer; I will respond to this comment tomorrow to let you know if I can get the lighter cropped flowy. - Mrs.P yah sweaty sister

Dick_Cheney_Is_Dead

In the giant snow storm of my childhood probably around 2003 we had a 25 ft tall pile of snow that me and all the neighborhood kids doug a fort into, hung out in, and had snowball fights over and through for a week or two until the whole thing collapsed and melted into a giant ice pile

gummysquee

It works! Thank you!

theycallmesavvy

Mrs. and Mr. P, we humbly request sticker options. We would eat up a sticker pack with the new merch line imaging included! We just ordered a green hoodie and a "bitch" tote 🩷 and would order sticker packs not only for us to use around our home and city, but also in my bestie snail mail care packages. 🫶

Dick_Cheney_Is_Dead

Also Sixteen Tons is a top 3 song for me and I regularly shotgun energy drinks to it at my manual labor job

When one person is oppressed, we are all oppressed.

Your_Friendly_Neighborhood_Fat_Guy

The amount of what feels like basic education I learn from the Pearlmans is honestly telling on how the education system is very selective on history.

OMG! I LOVE TABS THE BUNNY! I can't wait to get a shirt! And it's ookey spooky! And yes to digging holes. As a kid, we dug huge hole under this giant fir tree in our neighborhood and would hide in it. Also the beach. Dig all the holes in the sand.

That_Wokelahoman_Teacher

Hello, yes I have an encyclopedic knowledge of Futurama. So Mom owned “Mom‘s friendly robots“ it was in charge of robot manufacturing as well as oil production (see episode about sardines). Throughout the series, she is basically the Rockefeller of robots.

Athantastic

As a child growing up in Jamaica (the real one, not the one you guys have in Queens, NY) in a suburban town with a backyard, I DUG HOLES! Lots and lots before I was even 10. I swear, we're all just fragments of the same person, living the same lives.

Pelicans are my favorite dinosaur

I grew up next door to my grandparents who heated their house with a coal stove. I'd even play on the coal pile. My grandpa smoked lucky strikes and my dad smoked a pipe. I'm sure my lungs are fine. This episode had me singing "Factory Gates" by Kaiser Chiefs: "They tell you day after day To make your way through the factory gates What you make at the factory floor You take straight to the company store They tell you day after day To make your way through the factory gates 'Til they can't break your will anymore You are contractually tied to death's door"

Hey my husband’s family is of the Hatfields of WV! I love hearing this. Can I ask that Mr P do a hatfield vs McCoy sometime?

Smokey McPot

Unrelated, but I chose the Eagles for my fantasy team just for these two lovely humans. If it ain’t the Bears, GO BIRDS!

Sadgittarius♐️

Did anyone else start watching on YouTube and then have to finish over here because the mid-roll ads LITERALLY WOULD NOT LOAD AT ALL

gummysquee

Is 42 too young for evil grandma energy? There's gotta be a gray wig to help me pull it off.

gummysquee

In 97' it was so bad my brother and I made a series of tunnels through the yard. Magnificent. Yknow, until it flooded.

gummysquee

Ohhh, ours were gravel and we'd dig out like...a whole city of roads for our hot wheels. Most excellent times.

CrimsonHoudini

I’m really glad that plantation scrip was brought up because I had no idea about it until I watched Sinners! Remember guys, the only party lines that matter are up and down, and those miners who took up arms in Blair Mountain knew that. Stories like it give me hope that there can genuinely be a class unity, between race, gender, sex, creed, whatever.

ImTheProblem

Speaking of WV and wage theft, Black dog Coffee Company also skims off the tips of their employees and then just goes "we have to use it for the merchant fees". Really?? You have to use MY TIPS for YOUR merchant fees? Anyway, they owe all their vendors hundreds of dollars and are still somehow in business, and they say their coffee shop is "Switzerland" when it comes to politics. That's Black Dog Coffee Company in Shenandoah Junction, WV, everybody

gummysquee

This is legitimately fascinating, and also like, a happy little treat of knowledge that they didnt all die.

Prof Brown

Apparently the miners were very attached to their birds and treated them kinda like mascots

Purple_Nurple

I have a really long drive on Wed/Thurs, and I’m hoping to save this for at least some of the trip, buttttt idk if I have the willpower. 🥲🙃

Chaos, Bringer of

Glasscock is the absolute funniest name for an evil mayor that is in league with coal barons, it almost feels like something out of Austin Powers

RachelThePumpkinCarvingPhilosopher

God listening to this episode reminds me of Lyft and uber so much. After I lost my job I started doing rideshare. They say they only take 25-30% but then another 30-40% goes to “insurance or other fees” and the insurance rate is insanely high compared to market rates. It’s just another way for them to double dip on the ride price. Plus they manipulate the percentages by including your tips as customer payment. So let’s say they take 50% of the ride price but then someone adds a tip later. Then the percentage they took goes down and they don’t have to adjust it and pay out more. And they will systematically drive the ride prices down for drivers. They offer a ride for $9 and you take it then the next will be $8 and so on. 🙄 it feels impossible to get out of this system.

Lauren Jane

"scrip" is giving "a chunk of your salary is equity but you can only sell it when we say you can sell it which is also when every other employee can sell it so we control how much you're actually getting when you cash out." Looking at you Wayfair. And probably every other company who hoses employees with "equity" 🙄

Queen Sheila

I want you to know that a man named Bob, who bought the old Butler County morgue and turned it into a brewery, has personally gone to Congress to fight against raising the minimum wage in Pennsylvania and paying workers fair wages. He also got caught having an affair with the conservative Texas equivalent of She-Hulk and nearly lost his marriage.

Post_Potato_Gluten_Free_Bathtub_Bolognese

Omg the villages in Florida are insane. My grandparents and all their friends snowbird down there. The population there is half Floridians and half Canadian/northen state snowbirds. Whenever I have gone down to visit them in the winter it’s such weird vibes there. The craziest part to me is the mega church that is building its own essentially company town. They have a full school built, a daycare, its own shop and everything, they also own properties that they “help set people up in”.

Bell Venus

I grew up in rural Delaware, and the kids in our neighborhood dug a hole that was at least eight feet deep and 15 feet wide. It was behind my best friend’s house and by the time the adults realized what we were doing it was apparently a problem lol

✨Hot Marta✨

For me, the skull on the new merch is Linda McMahon, because Betsy DeVos’s head is already on a stake in my front yard ✨☺️✨

trollåli

So a I just learned a fantastically sad fact: Svalbard (specifically Longyearbyen) (under the control of the norweagian government) was organized as a company town (through the company Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani) until the early 90s. Most transactions didn't even include company script, but was just put down in a ledger that you'd have to ask to see

Tough_Angie

LEATHER DADDY ROBO NAZIS 🤣

Kristen

Ive never bought merch so fast. lol I love this design.

a lesbian with a sword

i listened to this on monday and laughed at mrs p saying mitch mcconnell is dead but then immediately saw the video of good old addison (mitch's birth name, look it up) being wheeled around feinstein style

Neckpubes

I'm only 19 minutes in, because I had to start work, where unfortunately, it is unsafe for me to listen to podcasts. But, I'm excited for the rest of the episode, because I've been a miner for 11 years, and a coal miner for 8 of those years. I'm in Montana, which is WAY better conditions than the Eastern half of the continent. Our coal seam is 10 to 15 feet high, so there's no crawling around. Our coal has lighter cover, so the methane has leached out. Our coal is about 100 million years younger than the Eastern coal in Appalachia, so there's a lot of cool fossils and shit. I get to see the fossilized remains of a prehistoric rain forest every day. I get paid way more than 2.5 cents an hour, entry level 18-year-olds can make six figures. Because of the rhetoric, everyone here is MAGA except for me and the Mexican guys, who have to pretend to be for self-preservation. I'm white and tenured, so I have the luxury that they don't to be honest with my positions. Ironically, when Biden was president, the value of coal was about 3× what it is today, and the cost of extracting it was significantly less. I made $30,000 less in Trump's first year back than I did in Biden's last year. The guys here still all ride on his orange chode like he's our savior. I can't wait to hear the rest of the episode.

Blarn

When I started working with my local Rapid Response (to ICE) group, I was surprised to find an active demographic of white liberal grandparents advocating for neighbors and working safety at marches. And if you think about it, old white people putting themselves between fascist bootlickers and affected communities is a brilliant solidarity tactic.

StarlightDancer

Just got my merch! It's my birthday present to me. Lol

StarlightDancer

Also ACAB. My dad's family is from the town next to Uvalde. He drove through the night (we live outside of Texas) to get there to help extended family + friends. Those cops couldn't take two fucking minutes to save those kids.

Ross Rolled

We dug a 16x10 hole in the old oil field behind my neighborhood. Even built a roof. Wonder whatever happened to it.

sealiahraith

God I love the energy of Mother Jones. What a damn queen.

MandiCakes

Mrs P recommended the Mütter museum to me 3 years ago when you had a show I drove down from MA for. It was the perfect rainy day activity the day after the show.

a_bitch_named_sam

The manager counting cash behind a door is so sketchy and so common. I worked at a cidery and they would collect all the cash tips then hand us money at the end. One shift one of my younger coworkers asked if that was normal and legal and I said it doesn't. I also worked at a music venue and we counted our own money and kept it all. So one shift we hid all the big bills and the manager (aka younger sister of the owner) knew we did something and basically pressured my younger coworker to throw me under the bus. I was accused of stealing and was put on a work suspension for a week. That should have been my alert to leave because things were never the same. I eventually was let go because they weren't doing well. They are out of business and only contract brew.

Miners: please pay us .15 and stop cheating the scale to force us to work more for less Coal Barons:

Its actually because birds have incredibly efficient respiratory systems, so they can pull in more toxins more quickly than we can in our own lungs!

Feral.Book.Dragon

Preach Mrs. P! No one can do everything, it's not realistic, so do what you can to make a difference. It matters and also how we work together to build community 🫶
