Ok so of course I grabbed onto the grimmest detail in the episode and my curiosity was piqued re: suicide rates. Maine, as mentioned, is pretty high with 18.1/100,000 people. I looked at Alaska, which Alex mentioned was the highest rates in the USA. 21.8/100,000. Now, what I was curious about was the argument that because Winters are cold and dark, etc, because Maine is so much more North than other places in the US. I live in Canada. The province I grew up in (Saskatchewan. It's like the Minnesota of Canada) is 18.1/100,00 (on par with Maine). The province I currently live in is 14.3 (not great). Nunavut??? 82/100,000. Nearly 4 times Alaska! Northwest territories is close to Alaska, about 20 per. But Nunavut is mind blowing. (There's a lot of reasons, including the effects of colonization on indigenous communities, which make up the vast majority of the population up North.) anyway, I found this information incredibly startling.

As a Mainer, I grew up hearing about Roxanne Quimby and knowing she was connected to Burt's Bees, but had no idea how. I moved away because tourism and hospitals seemed to be the only sources for income aside from the food service hustle. That and the rent for a studio is like 1k+ now, tent cities have popped up, and LePage/Collins with their supporters threaten my existence as a mixed queer person. Maine feels very much like a rich person's playground and there's only so much catering one can do before it wears on ya, considering the scale of prices. In 2014, I would rent a place for 400/month. That same place is 2.5k/month now.
