So this is a long walk for not much pay off... Bernays goes to Cornell and studies grain, and Mrs. P makes a corn/Cornell joke. Back in the late 1900s there was an indie band named Cub, and they had a small hit with the song "New York City", and there's a line in it where it goes, "where the streets are paved with diamonds, and there's just so much to see". The band They Might Be Giants covered the song on their album Factory Showroom, which came out in 1996. In 1997 TMBG played at my small liberal arts college in Iowa, Cornell College. Cornell College is distinct from Cornell University, and I sometimes wonder if TMBG *thought* they booked the larger Cornell University... Anyway, there was an on-campus band that opened for them, and *they* parodied the song "New York City" as "Cornell College", and the above mentioned line was changed to "where the streets are paved with corn, and there's just so much to see". So, Mrs. P making a corn/Cornell joke I have heard a million times going to a school named Cornell in Iowa, one of the largest corn producing states in the US. Also, fun fact, corn is a grass, Hank Green is wrong, we can eat grass.

I did a production of a musical adaptation of Daddy Long Legs years ago in Lowell MA and yes it is weird she marries her benefactor unknowingly whilst the “benefactor” writes her encouraging her to go out with her “new beau” aka HIM.

My southern grandmother was the same with dixie cups, she even had a wall mounted dispenser specifically for dixie cups in the guest bathroom. Not any of the other ones. Just the one that guests use.

The funny thing about Dixie cups is I "had them" growing up but not actually. My grandparents really liked this specific brand of yogurt and they would rinse and clean them, save them, and reuse them, but they referred to them as Dixie cups because they were just the small cups we used. They had so many we had 2 stacks in our cupboards that went basically to the top. They were the cups we used for quick drinks of water and it's what my mom gave me when I was little to drink milk and stuff. Related to the topic, it pisses me off how easily guys like this can just ruin things for us forever 😭

Very late and Kinda unrelated, but about Eisenhower: his primary foreign policy position was preventing or quashing Arab Nationalism. Even over Communism. Because the British (BP, British Petroleum) were like "we need you to help us keep the oil flowing" after Persia (today Iran) nationalized the Oil and Eisenhower was like "okay 👍" and then the CIA under Eisenhower overthrew Mosaddegh resulting in the Iran we know today.
