Hi!

As many of you know, I have had major back issues for over a year now; I've had a regular office chair for a while now but I consider upgrading to a more professional chair with both lumbar and cervical support.

I remember a couple patrons recommending me Herman Miller chairs a while ago... If I'm gonna get a loan for anything, might as well be for something useful and good for my back

Any of y'all have experience with Herman Miller chairs and could recommend a good model?

Are you also making exercises? Did your doctor tell you to also go to the gym to work your musculature? This will help you a lot

J

I have an Aeron from Herman Miller and have enjoyed it. You can get them used which is massively cheaper. You do miss out on the 10 year warranty, but it's an option.

Mrrainbow56

The Aeron is super nice but expensive (~$1,880 if not more), I have back issues currently so it helps a lot with extended periods of sitting at the computer

RLionheart

I had one of their Aeron Office Chairs Years ago and it had so many features for support and comfort have never had a chair like it since

TheKite

I got to the gym at least twice a week, maintain a regular physical activity, and go to physiotherapy :3

Sad Dragon

I don't really have any sources to Back you up, sorry

TheKite

(in fact I'm going to the gym literally now lol)

TheKite

Yeah considering a business moan for this

Definitely try to get ergonomic office chairs used. Steelcase Leap v2 is another good option. I'm sitting on this one right now as I'm typing this and would recommend.

I'm also for the Aeron chair, that's what I have! I tried like 4 different office chairs before getting that one and they all made my hurt in different ways. If you have a screen tablet I'd also recommend getting an ergo arm if you don't have one already. The Wacom flex arm is really sturdy, will support you leaning against it and has helped me avoid a lot of shoulder problems.❤️ I felt like it was such an indulgence when I bought it but it's definitely the best I've had. Mesh seats don't wear out! And if your work space gets really warm in the summer like mine, it keeps you a little cooler 🫠

Sadly I have no experience with the Herman Miller chairs, but... The chair I personally use, the one that lasted me for several years, is the Ergohuman mesh. It was so comfortable for me that, when it finally broke, I got a new one despite it's high price. I think it's around... 800?

Reposting here from discord for visibility: If you are going to spring for a herman miller chair, I'd recommend this Kickstarter chair: LiberNovo Omni (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/libernovo/libernovo-omni-worlds-first-dynamic-ergonomic-chair?ref=user_menu) All of their prototypes and early production models that have been sent out have been reviewed positively, and some have even ranked it above the Herman Miller Embody in comfort and posture. The footrest is also a very nice bonus. The early bird deal only has 24hrs left so it's a bit time sensitive

I used a first-generation Aeron for over a decade. while it wasn't the most comfortable chair, it did allow me to spend prolonged time in front of the keyboard without causing back issues or fatigue. It was also robustly built, and worked without breaking for that entire time. I currently use a Steelcase Gesture which, like the Aeron, also allows me to work longer without fatigue, but for me is more comfortable. If you can, try to find a (professional) office store that you can try on different manufacturer's chairs. In the US in many major metropolitan areas we have "office liquidator" stores that buy up office chair stock from failed businesses and refurbish and resell them - they often have a showroom with several chairs to try out.

Oh! I know what kind of store I'm looking for when it comes time to replace my gaming chair!

white_rbt.obj

True, but the other nice thing about Herman Miller (unless its changed recently) is that you can buy and install replacement parts for like every piece of the chair.

TheKite

I already use an ergo arm, i got the Ergotron one! I'm gonna look into the Aeron chair :3 Thanks!

Niceeeee good luck! I hope it helps you feel better! ❤️

i'd personally recommend steelcase over herman miller if you're in that price range. i've had good experience with the steelcase leap

jubs

Fwiw, even if a chair is really good, it might not suit you personally, especially when dealing with specific conditions. If at all possible, you should try to test sit various kinds of chairs to get a feel for what your needs are.

TheKite

Thats also true... I could always contact the Herman Miller customer service, describe my situation and ask for a product that would fit, or perhaps if the have a physical store in france i could go test chairs at

Lumbarerino

Just get it used got my Herman miller for 300 bucks from a store that bought old office chairs

jubs

Just remember to not hurry. A chair is a highly personal thing, and getting a good one is a big investment. Take your time and explore your options.

There are four real choices here: The Herman Miller Embody, Libernovo Omni (preorder), Haworth Fern, and Steelcase Leap. In that order IMO. The Embody is perhaps the best ergonomic chair on the market, although that’s subjective. Especially at its roughly ~2K price point, you’re definitely in the realm of diminishing returns. Buy this one refurbished; this chair has a 12 year warranty, and HM is known for building chairs that last. You’re highly unlikely to buy a lemon second hand. The Libernovo comes in at half the price, but at the risk of coming from a company that’s practically newborn. That said, every reviewer (both sponsored and unsponsored) agrees that this chair punches well above its price point. The Haworth Fern comes in at 1200 USD and has been sitting at second place in my personal tier list for a while. I’d say it has the least aggressive support on this list from the factory, but that can be augmented with official inserts and at-home solutions. The Steelcase Leap is at the bottom of my personal list for the simple fact that it’s overrated. Really, it’s only on here because it’s good at being the best “an chair,” you can buy. Brand new Steelcase is asking 2K for it, but if you can get it sub 1K it’s worth the price. Really just a regular ~500 price range office chair cranked up to 11, and even then you’re mostly paying the brand tax. My recommendation for you is the Embody, or its business oriented sibling, the Aeron. Both are good at helping with posture and can absolutely help with back problems. They’re not perfect; Herman Miller sometimes suffers from the same sort of arrogance Apple’s famous for. Their opinion of how the customer should experience their product can, at times, be more apparent in the design and engineering of the chair than any sort of user adjustability. The non-adjustable aggressive lumbar on the Embody comes to mind. Second pick (yes this is a hype pick, shut up) is the Libernovo Omni. I’m running out of time on the post to give armchair recommendations (pun intended) on seating I’ve only owned for a month at most or, in this case, not at all. So I’ll let the people who’ve actually used this one do the talking. I recommend looking at some videos from Ahnestly and BTODtv, these guys are great reviewers and absolutely know what they’re talking about.

You can look for retailers on most chair manufacturers websites. I would highly recommend going to sit on the seat you plan to plant yourself in before dropping a stack of cash on something you may not enjoy.
