One of the best things about the fairy tale comparison for Ame is that in fairy tales witches aren't just fun characters with cool powers but an archetype of antagonists that represent women who, by society's standards, have gained too much knowledge and/or power. The Evil Queen of Snow White attempts to literally kill the beauty of nativity because that being the societal standard for female behavior damages her position and station. So having Ame play a fairy tale hero, bolstered by her two true friends, a way to pick out who is the hero of a fairy tale, while also having to be the one who wrestles with the notion of how to be a good witch is so layered and fun to watch play out.

George Hoyle

Wait the king of night has at least 12 names? And all of them are the names of the 12 strongest warlocks in a hostile kingdoms territory? What kind of horcrux bullshit is this Brennan?

Carla D.

A hoo hoo!! Crackle, crackle, backrle

Ben (The Wizard Syzygy)

Halfway through. A lot of talk on ignoring the morals (of Ame's actions) cos fairytale logic only to come around and justify the morals we're apparently ignoring, with 'Indry's evil so it's fine.' XD Which I already thought from the get go. Just felt like an odd back and forth my silly brain couldn't unnotice

Ryan L.

Yay😎🎉🎉🎉

YESSS Citadel wizard subclass, this sounds exactly as crunchy as I was hoping

Someone please help me with the geography of the post credits scene. The only time I can pinpoint in my memory of hearing the River Lythewyn is when it was mentioned in the Twelve Brooks interlude. Was it mentioned anywhere else? Cause I'd be devastated if Twelve Brooks is one of the first outposts to be devastated by the Man in Black's movement on the empire

Caroline Scarbrough

As a Caroline, this episode is quite special to me already

Annabel Mont

One thing I would like to point out about Erica's one shot, Brennan said it was set in the summer of the childrens adventure. Not a addition to the children's adventure. Js

Abigail W

“I hate realizing things in front of people” is the most relatable TTRPG moment for someone who is bad at holding onto lore. Loved clarification on MIB!

Cody Zimmer

Omg, Sir Curin (sp?), is going to be the champion of the man in black since his first choice was turned down! 😳

CommodoreBlue

BRENNAN!! I DIDN’T REALIZE ALL 12 PATRONS WERE MAN-IN-BLACK CATFISHES!!! How could you drop that on me like this?!!?!? Ok, maybe I should have listened to the conclave dialogue more carefully, I guess that’s on me.

Faith Price

I *need* to see that polaroid picture

The Wizard Syntax

Deep Dapplegrim cut. Norwegians be buck wild. "Yeah, I'll stomp that mountain, just need some bigger shoes.""Hide in my nostril, she'll never find you there."

Erik Hanson

The dice surely do tell a tale, and hoo boy did they favor the players for this finale!

Julie

A hoo hoo and crackle crackle, who else is ready for the train ride!?

Erik Hanson

I just heard Erika confess that Quest Fever is Ame's natural state of being, and I immediately thought of Heath Ledger's Joker: "I am a dog chasing cars. I wouldn't know what to do with one if I caught it! I just... do things."

Khayroh

god there is nothing more exciting in the world to me than this story man

Patrishish

My body was in distress as Ame was stealing from her SISTER! That scene brought me to my knees. Some thing I really enjoy about this story is that the characters do things that are unfathomable to me, and maybe even don’t make sense to the real people, but do make sense to the flawed characters they are playing. Ame will surely pay a steep price for this offense, and it will make the story all the more interesting. I love how realistic it feels that a 20-year-old who is suddenly thrust into constant life or death situations, dealing with the loss of their mother/mentor, and dealing with far older and more powerful people would act out and do insane things. She’s a baby witch. She’s upset. Things get weird.

Dream Wizard Kyle Arca

Back in the studio? Did something happen that prevented them from being in person for a while?

Jack Jones

Quest Herpes truly is the wildest thing

Zander Jenkins

Brennans right, it was sick, SICK AND TWISTED

Tyler Kahle

This one is for Abbria. Suvi in an extreme emotional state as she leaves the palace of wind and stars. If Ursalon had shown Suvi the watch from the Man in Black, would she have worked out where the lenses in port talon came from?

irisilmaril

i feel like “sister” is like a magical legal term here, in all other regards Indri had it coming. She was trying to kill Ame and eventually the entire “sisterhood”. Indri kind of burned that bridge with the whole murder conspiracy and many time murder of children under her tutelage.

Patrishish

I agree that Indri is a villain! I was just worried for Ame for that very reason. The sisterhood is binding, so it is dangerous! I was so scared for her!

Blaize Gordon

I've been foaming at the mouth waiting for this chat to come out!

C. A. Whyse

Also, owing Ame a favor muddies the waters here. Does it all balance out? Or is this a debt Ame will owe later... Witch rules can be tricky!

irisilmaril

he is swindling the hell out of the ruling class of an entire country to send make them unwitting warriors for a single cause: his. Although I think they probably could figure it out if they swallowed their pride and talked to each other in depth, but that wouldn’t be in character for aristocratic families.

Ajax

Quest H*****s. Y'all.

Barron Botts

What's the secret code we put in our profiles to identify others with Quest Herpes?

Luke 'Punquillity' Elias

Holy shit Aabria referenced Ehud-a left handed man, the really random judges story I always remember. Top notch

Emergency Santa

On the note of morality shifting from "a hero is clever and able to outsmart anyone and anything" to "a hero is noble, brave and willing to face anything head on" in western culture. A lot of it is from the invention of romance from the french queen Eleonora from around the... 7th century I think. She basically invented the idea of the knightly hero whos core values are honor and bravery and are driven by and draws strenght from love. Although that love is always unattainable (usually their superios wife). At the time it actually made a huge shift in how women were viewed (wich presumably might have been her motive). Going from being a lesser creature of sin to, still not a regular human, but now sometimes that can be positive. Like the woman as this mystical creature that inspires men to do great things. Though it mostly still relates to women of the upper classes. She basically invented courtly love and with it kind of reinvented "the hero" and reintroduced "the heroine/the woman as a muse". I apoligize for the long post. I just love stuff about how cultural understandings shifts. And this one has a weirdly specific person attached to it. I hope someone else enjoys it as well :)

So which beloved NPC (besides Sir Curran) is gonna be turned into a zombie by the Man in Black and have to be tearfully destroyed? I nominate Silver.

mguin

little grasshopper-ish creatures attracted to magical things, with magic-damaging effects (I'm pretty sure, double-check me)

Carrie Mook Bridgman

Taylor Moore and Brennan Lee Mulligan, you have left yourselves wide open for a retributive curse. Obviously there's a reason why Brennan is the Fox.

Joshua Smith

At 5 in the morning turning this on and hearing the idea of this being animated brought a tear to my eye. I can imagine it so clearly Later another huge laugh from revelation being the Disney+ take over 🤣

Carrie Mook Bridgman

His backstory was that he came to Port Talon from somewhere else after he was hanged for treason. He has the threads of the rope around his neck. And when Ursulon shook hands, Will Gallows' hand was ice cold.

Carrie Mook Bridgman

Some trickster stories (Brer Rabbit) come specifically from oppressed people, which makes the lack of conventional morality easier for me. Brer Rabbit is about outsmarting and getting the better of the people whose whole goal is to use and destroy you. I don't know if that's true of, say, Anansi the Spider or Coyote.

Carolyn Hoffman

I fucking hate that song!!!! My name is CAROLYN and everyone sings that song when they meet me.... That's NOT MY NAME!!!

Alissa

I was scared I would have to listen to Sweet Caroline but thank god we spent all our money on the Crazy Frog song license. 😂

Carrie Mook Bridgman

Oh, certainly. I just don't know if the older trickster stories had the same context. I guess most cultures have some version of the big guys walking all over the little guys.

Josh

Well now you have a version JUST for you!

George Hoyle

They also mentioned that the next side story will be grim. Perhaps this will be the story of the attack that led to the death of Suvi’s parents from the perspective of the townsfolk?

Stefanucci Mozzarella

What’s Eursalon’s Oath? Maybe that needs a whole episode and is to come. That would be really special, annnd mayyybeee even a new type of homebrewed Oathhh!? Maybe maybe baby. Eursalon’s, Hooo!!!!!!!

Brandon Carbaugh

Among all the other things this show gets praised for, I do want to mention one that I don't see very often: Consistency. The cadence of new episodes that y'all have consistently maintained for now three seasons is just genuinely really impressive. It sounds like it's accomplished by just having a massive backlog, which is itself a really impressive feat of planning. Kudos to all involved, because it's really admirable (and, as someone who worked on a live-service mobile game for nearly four years, I also know it's REALLY FUCKIN HARD).

Sil

Oath of The Wanderer - surprise, that divine Oath was made to an appellation of The Pilgrim Under Stars!

fireflowerXD

Had this hit me at 1am while thinking of their crackle to my fire joke, "you're the fox to my witch, you're the quest to my bear, you're the geas to my wizzard"

TheloniousPunkyBrewster

Interesting, is your implication that The Stranger is playing both sides- providing assistance to the Citadel as well as their enemies ?

CoolioAsh

That post credit scene, talking about how the world exists outside the PC's, it reminds me of one piece cover stories that have insane implications for the lore of world

CoolioAsh

Or post arc lore dumps, it's a signature one piece move

Mary W

Quest. Herpes. 🤣🤣 I cannot stop laughing omg

Connor

Well guess what? We thank YOU from the bottom of OUR hearts for thanking us from the bottom of YOUR hearts. Fan appreciation is always appreciated. So how about THAT?

Mary W

Could not agree more that of all the things that happened in this finale I loved, Ame and the homies “exiting” from the castle in the most chaotic way is something I would kill to see animated because it was so SO funny .

Tyler Kahle

The Man in Black was the one who killed Wren, is asthetically connected to the curse preventing Amme from inheriting her station, was associated with the assassin on the ship who admitted to killing young witches, has the untinted version of the port talon lense on his watch, planted two spirits in the woodland green's retinue, and is in control of the citadel's counterpart. I don't think he's playing both sides i think the citadel is an incidental casualty on his way to dethrown the coven. He told Ursalon that "win or loose" he still wins. If Amme had died or failed to uphold her station, the coven would have had to remove another witch themselves. There are no good replacement witches because he has been killing them through proxies. I think he used Marrow to give the empire the means to fight the coven. At the same time, those lenses are the only thing that both witches and spirits fear and move them to declare war.

Kael McDonald

I love that we circled back to how many titles the Man in Black has, and how the most potent spirit Suvi had learned about had three whole monikers, because now at this point in the story I feel like we also need to acknowledge that Eursulon has multiple names! Protector of the Wizard Sky. Guardian of the Witch of the World's Heart. And of course, The Strongest Man in Silbry. Our best boy is going to collect a title per level and I'm here for it.

Kael McDonald

I'm psyched about the premise, but I gotta say I'm sad we're not diving back into Twelve Brooks. I fell in love with that town so quickly. Hope we get another interlude there soon!

Kael McDonald

Ahhhhhh now I'm STRESSED lol Twelve Brooks must be protected!

Ro Lara

This fireside clicked something into place for me which is (in my mind and with how my mind works as someone unable to do math for the life of me) Wizards are math nerds Witches are "arts" nerds

Ro Lara

Wizards bake pastries, witches taste shit as they go and change the recipe halfway through. Both make delicious treats but how they get there is deeply different

Colette Sheaff

What I wouldn't give for a map of Umora

Austin

Does anyone know if an updated Witch Subclass has been dropped? I wanna play one but not sure if there’s a new release

Dominic Corbin

Not disagreeing with you, but I would go with a college metaphor where wizards are hard science (math/physics/engineering/etc), and witches are some other area

Dominic Corbin

Sometimes the thing I love about science is that we don't exactly know how it works. Oddball results giving us unexpected discoveries once thought impossible

Dominic Corbin

My recollection is they they don't damage magic so much as eat magical effects/enchantmenta, but that may have been what you meant.

Will

Help me remember, didn’t the Twelve Brooks story end on sort of a cliffhanger? I think I’ve been waiting for a part 2, and realize that was never a part of things

Troy Lowrance

I think a lot of these firesides are via zoom or Skype. But they come together a few times a year to play and record these in house

Brandon Rilling

My life is pretty rough rn, but hearing this ppl laugh and giggle and talk about the amazing work they do brings me so much joy

Every once in a while i slow down the fireside chats while brennan is talking to imagine he’s drunk

Cassidy Carson

So happy to finally join the fireside!

Giant Tom Hanks

What ep had the hold music? I can't remember

Blades Dragonic

Having all 3 arcs end because of quest fever is a trend I am all here for ❤️

Grant

i binged all 3 arcs in the last few weeks and had to sign up for the fireside!! i have not felt so excited and enchanted by a story in a long time. thank you all for all of your hard work bringing this into the world. i can’t wait to see what happens next!

kragonaught

“I CAN FIX HIM” sureeee Lou, that turned out so well for Mirara

Giant Tom Hanks

So Sir Curran is the other person!?👀👀

The Wizard Sparrow

Witches relate to nature, free thinking, spirited and so on

rio

I'm losing my fucking mind, I did not expect the arcanosteampunk shit. I was so surprised with the pocket watch, and I've already died over trains (this is my ghost typing)

rio

The end of this arc feels like such a huge turning point in this story. In each chapter we got to see an interesting kind of snap shot of each character's potential and history where we see the greatest of their kind in the places that they might expect their lives to lead them. Chapter 1 we see Great Spirits out in the Big Bad World where Eursulon spent his in-between years. Chapter 2 is the Archmages in the Citadel. And Chapter 3 the Coven of Elders in a crazy monument to the meeting of spirituality and mortality. We also see each character grow into their responsibility by the end of each chapter. We saw Suvi learn about the consequences of her actions and start to see herself beyond her privilege in Port Talon. Ame realized the full weight of her station from Sly's prophecy. And now we get to see Eursulon finally prepared to take on his quest. And I love so much that we started with Eursulon wearing his shame like a costume, and we end this chapter with him taking his first knightly steps and freeing his first spirit since he truly took on this responsibility. This is my favorite story ever, and I'm truly RABID for Chapter 4.

Erin Mundy

The last Fireside episode, I think. The actor playing Eursulon that episode stopped one of Brennan’s trains of thought and said “WAIT A MINUTE I JUST PUT SOMETHING TOGETHER.” Sorry I don’t have a timestamp for you :(

Stefanucci Mozzarella

The oath is made in the well? You for real? Nah close, but that ultimately wasn’t his path…

Sil

No no, I'm just theorising

Connor Sponsler

Some are born with quest fever, some achieve quest fever, and some have quest fever thrust upon them as though through some sort of magical compulsion

Aussie Griffin

This answered almost all of my questions. o.- A.G.

Essie Ruth

If there is a crackle/crackle in your hoo-hoo, you may have a uti.

William Krise

little gem grasshoppers that eat magic

Riga

Shoutout to Brennan's thank you for being on the firesides spiel.. like damn I've been feeling kinda unappreciated irl recently and hearing that kinda made me cry, like in a happy way, so thank you brennan I didn't know I needed that 🥹😭❤️

The Pompous Peasant

On teh ep 23 and think that sus for steele, very sus VERY.

mguin

I think she got it sometime around or right before visiting the Citadel's weaponry workshop (with Suvi's friend who survived the aether bath)

The Pompous Peasant

Aether bath hahaja that sounds insane. How did I miss that in the episode?! I'm just doing to have to give that one a relisten. They all are so damn good I'm constantly replaying bits or moments, love it. Thanks for the answers brother!

Brian Schoner

Great stuff as always, though I am a bit disappointed that we didn't get to hear any of Kneil Diaymond's other great hits, like "I Am...I Think", "Last Week's Songs", or "You Don't Bring Me Pizza." Here's to having him back next chapter!

Erin Michelotti

"You can't believe your way through it. You have to do fucking math." - best description of a wizard. 💗

Marji

Just joined the patreon and I am HUNGRY for more episodes. New episodes are a highlight of my week when they come out! You all are so talented and the production is so slick. Thank you for making this amazing and complex work of art!

Fxd Gear Queer

I think that favor was repaid by Indri voting against the war. And if it was, genius move. It cost her nothing, she got rid of the obligation, and still can move against the Citadel, only now her sisters have to pay her.

Bo Schwartz Madsen

A little bit behind, having just recently started listening, and I am as listening to this episode right now while doing the NYT Connection Game. Where one of the answers were “Jack and the Beanstalk”…… Spooky.

Michele Meyer

Sir Curran was also the son of a bear, in that his father was known as “the Bear of Brockvale.”

Dr. Eggman

Wow, can’t believe you guys got Kneil Diaymond!

Brandon Brewer

As an engineer... Y'all calling me out over here talking about how wizards approach problems. I didn't ask for this smoke! 🤣

Entropy_Head

Damn, Brennan and Taylor frolicking in the moonlit wood naked in leaves and tying farmers shoes together is so brat summer coded.

ella thompson

wait, ghost army? was that just a lotr reference from aabria of all people??

Saskia Scott

I'm so glad Aabria brought that fairytales aren't really about morality. Actually there is often something in fairytales called the morality of cleverness. So tricksters are quite often rewarded, this isn't seen as wrong in the tale. I think that Umora is very fairytale... Like I wouldn't expect Ame to get immediate consequences in a fairytale. Edit: oh, Brennan just brought that up. I love fairytales

Kai M.

The Paul-ish was such a funny pun and idk if it was intentional by Erika but I clocked it anyway

Meonlights

Considering Tricksters: Germany has the Reinecke Fuchs / Reinecke de Voss tales about the fox, deeply based in old Fables and while the fox is the protagonist, he is very much not the hero. He will kill, steal, maim and worse because he has cruel enemies and lords. I love that because I think nowadays too many people want flawless good heroes and forget how interesting flawed characters are.

The Wizard Stream

I thought Indri's vote WAS returning the favor 👀 interesting

Bryan

WHYYYYYYYYYYYY IS THIS OPENING MUSIC OF THE EPISODE BREAKING MY FUCKING HEART 😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩

Bryan

I’ve been mainlining this show and the firesides for - a week? And these characters are all I think about

The Witch of the Written Word

On my ... third? listen through and I just caught that Brennan said the gifts Indri received from her 6 sisters was upon her assuming her station which: 1) Why didn't Ame receive gifts? 2) Didn't Indri kill her mentor? And isn't this pretty common knowledge? So were the gifts given before the knowledge was common? Or did the other members just really hate their sister and were thanking Indri? Or were they appeasing her, like 'hey don't kill us, too, here are some gifts?' None of these really fit to me, but now I'm curious!

The Wizard Salt

Blown away that Aabria read Bettelheim for the podcast, that’s serious commitment

Carlos Torres

I’ve been thinking about the other stations. Namely… their names. Here’s what I’ve got. •Witch of the Waking Dawn •Witch of the Winding Path/Way •Witch of the White Sand •Witch of Word Unspoken •Witch of the Wayward Son (just a massive Kansas fan, basically an Ally Beardsley style shoehorn)

TheWizardSleaze

witch of the wayward son is just Castiel tbh

Tim Mullally

I just want to call out, now that I've heard it more than once, that I LOVE to hear Taylor use the same sound for Wavebreaker brought to bear as Sting striking down spiders in the animated Hobbit. ❤️❤️❤️ I didn't realize (having not watched that in 20 years) that hearing that would bring such a vivid recollection to mind. Amazing. The whole episode! I would ship Eursylon and Tefmet in a heartbeat!

Nesha Triumphs

This opening is SENDING ME, because I, too, have never sang Sweet Caroline. I am just realizing I wasn't even sure who sang it. It was just never played in my background, so I've only heard it in passing 😂
