We are so proud to present the NEW and UPDATED Witch Class!

[download links are at the bottom of the post]

Thanks to everyone who played the first version and submitted feedback! The design team reviewed all the playtest data and revised the class and spells ... and also had fun writing some witchy magic items.

All the revisions are outlined in the changelog, attached below along with the PDF of the Witch Class.

In addition, playtest surveys for this version and the Wizard of the Citadel subclass will be up in a few weeks!

As Patreon subscribers, you all get first dibs, and non-Patreon audience members will be able to purchase this class outside of a Patreon subscription in early December.

We hope you enjoy this new and improved Witch class, and look forward to your feedback!

EDIT (1:29pm PT): Thanks to our followers who pointed out various typos, confirming we are working on getting them fixed!

EDIT (7:08pm PT): Our team has combed through both documents and fixed the typos and discrepancies! If there are any further ones you notice, please don't hesitate to let us know in the comments. Thank you all for your patience!

EDIT (Dec 2, 2024): The survey form for the updated Witch Class is now open! Check it out here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/15NTQCtKmkkVU78S9zw0llzfpmLZ7tQEXqrQijuBOesg/viewform?edit_requested=true

Playtest feedback is most useful when it identifies specific issues, pain points, and areas of confusion—or things that are working well. If you think something is bad/not fun/unbalanced/not as good as the previous version, please be specific and tell us why! And finally, please don't backseat design—it's most helpful to know what you think of the existing design, not what you think it should be, so we can best identify the core issues to address.

The designers (Hannah, Mazey, Brandes, Dan, and Brennan) are the ones reading the feedback, so please keep things polite and respectful. We know the class isn't perfect yet—that's why we're playtesting!—but we've put a lot of time, blood, sweat, tears, difficult-to-obtain ritual components, hearts, and souls into this design process.

Quentin

Thank you SO much for including a change log ❤️ and thank you for this amazing class!

Jessie Harris

Hell yeah, amazing birthday present, Muir’s getting an upgrade

Harleson

Think I spotted a typo: Changelog says Retributive Curses come at Level 2, but the playtest doc has it come at Level 1

Sam A.

Gorgeous! Can't wait to give it a shot! Thanks to all the folks who worked hard on such wonderful witchery!

AsterIsk-III

Might have to have an all witch campaign now!!

Cody Hoerner

Typo: Retributive Curses is level 2 in the table, level 1 in the feature heading.

K. A. Winter

Excited to read through this! Though the fact it has been updated for 2024 rules means it will take a bit of time before my table can apply the updates so our still using 2014 game can make use of it. And once again I find myself hating how subclasses are just that now instead of the fun of unique names. I love coven as the subclass term for witch that's exactly how it should be.

Teive

Typo: Changelog says curse upon the heartless is a d8, document says d6

Emily Rowan

My green witch reached level 3 this week, so I'm going to have fun looking through the changes as I level her up 😊

Kellie O Edwards

I apologize if it's been asked before- but are there plans to add any other covens to the subclass list? I am SO curious to know what Mirara is working with and/or how Indri's star library divination would be represented in P.H.B./R.A.W. tools

Micah

I noticed the Coven of the Green has the same text pasted in twice under the general subclass description and then again under 'Green Spells', and the spellcasting explanation about having them always prepared/not counting against spells known is missing!

Micah

Also! Curse of the Grasping Green mentions an effect if creatures are within your 'Breath of the Green' but doesn't explain what that is anywhere else in the document!

Toe

the worry stone is SO cool

LW Dance

I'm betting it's a typo for Veil of the Green.

Samantha Chang-Salmon

Amazing! Sorry if this is a silly question, but is there any way to incorporate this into dnd beyond? My dm won’t allow it otherwise 😭

Anthony Franco

Just had a big story/level-up moment for my witch so it'll be fun to include some narrative shake ups for the update🙌

Micah

Most likely, that would make sense

Quincy Hotchkiss

First off, excellent work, I think the changes to the core features like the tokens , curses, and sanctum are great. Second; you might want to know that some of the subclass features appear to refer to features whose names have been changed or no longer exist. For instance the green subclass refers to an ability call breath of green which I assumes is meant to be veil of green, and the claw subclasses indomitable will (I think that’s what it’s called) refers to not be able to lose concentration in curse spells triggered by taking damage, though the subclass nor base class appears to have no abilities that allow them to cast curse spells as a response to taking damage. There also a pears to be some typos, such as the allied hunter having an Ac of 1+spell level, meaning an ac of 4 if cast at third level. I love the theme of this class and I can’t wait to play it at some point, I hope these observations are helpful.

Wildmage Press

You can totally still use it with the 2014 rules! You might want to tweak the Green Dreams effect for Veil of the Green, but most of the differences are purely cosmetic and wording-related.

GandalfTheGay

Very excited to try these changes out in my home game, been playing a witch ever since it came out and many of these revisions are looking very welcome to the overall balance and feel of the Witch!

Richard

I'm a little confused. In v1, you could use Retributive Curse so cast a curse spell as a reaction. In this new draft (which I prefer) you get inverse bardics to effect NPCs but now makes a "curse" spell redundant.

Wildmage Press

Unfortunately the DDB Homebrew tools don't allow you to make an entire new class. Would your GM allow you to keep your character sheet in a google doc, if they're worried about being able to see your character info?

bloops

Staff of the Coven is making me side-eye Ame’s Wand… are we getting more magical items for our sweeties? Also, it’s fun seeing more direct analogues to the canon witches’ abilities (even the Madame made a slight shift to familiar resurrection rules by having the body disappear)

Barron Botts

Interested in if something similar to a wild magic effect that is catalyzed by how far away from average the roll is. Like a retributive curse that when used out of combat could land an effect weeks later or could affect a bloodline.

Wildmage Press

Will update! "Breath of the Green" is indeed a former name for "Veil of the Green."

Carly Lynch

Confused as to where the Curse Spells apply now. The changelog says it's coven-specific, but I don't see curse spells referenced in the Coven of the Green. Am I missing something?

Shannon

Thanks for pointing out! Working on fixing it :)

Shannon

Thanks for pointing out! Working on fixing it :)

Shannon

Thanks for pointing out! Working on fixing it :)

Shevek1312

Looks great! Thank you

Wildmage Press

We're working on fixing the typos right now! Re: Steady Will, it's saying that you can't lose Concentration on a curse spell *because* you took damage. Will adjust wording for clarity!

Geno

Is ritual casting gone ? Edit - all caster get ritual casting in the 2024 edition.

Donovan Arthen

I have had some luck homebrewing it as a subclass of Druid in DDB - would require a subclass for each coven that covers the entire class and a selected coven. It also requires you to be aware of certain aspects of the character sheet as a player so that you don't get confused between druid features and witch features.

Dungeon Master

This update gives a really fun shakeup to the originally published Witch playtest. Though I do have a few concerns. Curse spells are now limited to the Coven of the Claw and Coven of the Wicked, which I could understand the narrative implications of if the other two subclasses didn't have their own new curses. It feels strange to have something denoted in the class itself only ever effecting two of the subclasses. In combination with the new curses I think it begins to feel like a carryover from the old mechanics rather than a carefully made design choice. Maybe Steady Will and Curse Tokens should work on all spells and you do away with curse spells alltogether? On a personal note, I'm also not a huge fan of curses being a twice per rest ability and never gaining any more uses. Even though you obtain more curses with their own uses per rest with your subclass, being just as able in your curses at 3rd level as you would be at 20th rubs me the wrong way. Even with the improved kinds of curses you can cast, it almost feels like you would simply neglect your weaker curses, limiting your options for high-stakes scenarios. Also your subclass curses and your class curses should share the same use-pool. I don't have a big justification for that, it just feels right. Oh yeah, adding on to this because I don't want all of my input to be sour. The magic items rock so hard. Worry Stone and Bauble Trap my beloved <3

Luke

The witch spells lists shows the Spellwarping curse is 4th level abjuration, but the New Spells header denotes it as 4th level enchantment, and the spell *description* marks it as 3rd level abjuration! Which one is correct?

Wildmage Press

level 3 abjuration! Cleaning that up now :)

Philosophical Hobbit

I think it's called Curse of the Grasping Green (section after the CotG spells).

Micah

Though it has 'curse' in the name, that feature doesn't actually have anything to do with the specific curse spells noted in the overall class

Wildmage Press

I was wondering if a Druid hack would work! I imagine it's a lot of effort, though.

Dan Dillon

Every spellcaster can ritually cast in the 2024 update. :)

Noah Dundas

I could be wrong, but believe it's part of the core 2024 rules now that any class can use ritual spells, so it's implied.

Geno

Oh! Didn’t know that.

Geno

Swell!

Noah Dundas

I'm a little confused by Swineskin - it seems to be essentially the same as Polymorph but is: - A 3rd level spell instead of 4th - Has a range of 30 ft instead of 60 ft - Only able to target Humanoids - Doesn't replace the target's hit points or provide temporary hit points, and only ends when they are reduced to 0 hit points. So, if I cast Swineskin on someone successfully, what happens when the party beats on them until they run out of hit points? Are they just fully KOd without the ability to turn back? Or did I miss something?

Noah Dundas

I agree with this a lot! I really loved the design of curse spells as a clever way to put extra witch-y abilities onto existing SRD spells, and it feels a bit bad that since I'm currently playing a Heart witch, I don't have a way of interacting with that part of the class anymore. Also, agreed that the items are absolutely incredible!

Philosophical Hobbit

Should it be read as: As a bonus action, you can cast a curse spell on a creature within 60 feet of you for 1 hour? Is that the correct interpretation? And then retributive curses are their own separate thing?

Robotlives

Sad to report that I’m disappointed with these changes. Feels like a lot of the covens uniqueness and viability got gutted except for Heart.

Walker Lindley

For Crimson Gift, I'd recommend letting witches use Wisdom for attack and damage bonus specifically with the natural weapons provided by this feature. Alternatively, consider allowing them to use Dexterity. Otherwise I think they can only use Strength. This makes them very MAD since they need Strength for attacks, Dexterity for AC, and Wisdom for spells, not to mention Constitution since they're going to be in melee a lot.

Xanian Jamfalcon

I think I like the previous version more but some of the new features are cool! The subclasses feel a little cooler though the old Claw felt more inspired. I'm excited to playtest eventually! Check out Spheres5e!

Benjamin Ogilvie

A question - the Swineskin spell refers in the description to it being a curse, and a creature being cursed while under the effects, but it isn't listed as a "curse spell" in the table on page 15 - is it meant to be a curse spell?

Faye Core

You can use a melee spell attack if i read it correctly

Kris Miranda

FWIW I run a remote game and use a Google spreadsheet for a player running the v1 Witch! We keep a placeholder character of the same level in the DDB Campaign, so I can still track inventory (especially magic items), feats, have accurate(ish) math for the Encounter Builder, etc.

Kris Miranda

Big fan of the new Retributive Curses and the new progressions for tokens and sanctums! On page 5, under Witchcraft Talismans, I think the paragraph beginning "As an action while you can see a talisman, you can recover the sacrificed spell slot" comes early. It seems like it should be under the Instilled Spells section, where the mechanic of sacrificing a spell slot is introduced.

Amica Sparrowfell

Well these changes are fascinating. I would appreciate a lot of clarity on the curses, though. I have a level 6 heart witch and I would love to add the new retributive curses to my arsenal, but I have no idea what to do with the curse spell list now. Can the spells still be used as retributive (reaction) curses, in addition to the new options? Do they still work with the coven level 3 curse ability? (If they do, does that mean that every curse spell is a bonus action and can last a full hour?????) If they work with neither, what makes them a curse? Help?

JP Sugarbroad

Pretty sure you're only allowed to instill 1st level spells at 5th level, but it doesn't say so.

JP Sugarbroad

Crimson Gift grants 2 hit points, but is acquired at 3rd level. Is that intentional?

James

Small typo on page 10 under "Level 6: Fierce Familiar" at the end of the first line. Space needed in "youcan". I love this! Thank you all for your hard work and dazzling creativity!

Alessandro Chiappetta

I have a question regarding the familiar; I hope any of you can answer: Usually, animals have a small intelligence rating, so the question is: Would your role an animal familiar as its actual intelligence raw rating, or since it's a witch familiar, is it supposed to be at least enough intelligent/magic intelligent to role it as an "almost human being" and have a normal conversation?

FooldiverDX

There is a stat block in 5E called Awakened Rat, which the only change to a normal Rat is with human level Intelligence and Wisdom. I would assume the same would happen with Familiars.

Nobody

Why do witch's not have witch bolt? It seems like it would be a cool spell to have as a curse trading the grappling for damage of Witch's grasp to give you more flexibility as well as a damage spell that has some range on it. On a side note 2024 witch bolt feels very witchy and definitely like a spell a wicked witch would have kind of like a witch sith lightning

Jan

Hell yeah! Just made a v1 Witch a few days ago and updated her to this version today. Stoked to play her in a Curse of Strahd run.

Wildmage Press

Witch Bolt is not in the SRD, meaning we can't publish content that mentions it, but you are absolutely welcome to give it to your witch!

Wildmage Press

Yep! Melee spell attack = Wisdom based.

Wildmage Press

Right now Retributive Curses are their own effects that are NOT spells. The curse spell list interacts with certain coven features, but it's causing a lot of confusion and we'll probably deprecate it. ;)

Walker Lindley

I see, thank you! I was only seeing the "make a melee attack" part. Thanks!

Nobody

I didn't know that some PHB spells weren't in it. Thank you!

Ziggy Fox

I am STOKED to check this out! Got to play a Coven of the Claw with the v1 Witch a few months back (sassy possum gal named Granny Lyra). She died like a baddie at the hands of a vampire lord, and was one of my favorite classes to play!

Elliot Roberts

Are there any plans to create a MPMB script for the class once more play testing has been done?

Aviva

Hannah and the whole witch team, have you thought about sharing a full witch spell list as a stand-alone item on DMs Guild? All official books are allowed (no third party licensed content, etc) so all of the spells you’d like can be included! I’ve even toyed with offering to help put together a roll20 add-on for the class! Haha. I am stoked to be playing my bébé witch (though momentarily sad she just lost her subclass and won’t be getting thorn whip back)! ETA: I’m sure all of you mega-talented people have mile long to do lists. My DM and I could take a crack at it and post it for Patreon community feedback to create a draft you could work from. Would it be overly complicated for some spells to be available by subclass, though not given as always prepared? Or just leave it all open and folks can stick to the flavor of their subclass or not? I just answered my own question, but I do so love the subclass themes.

ThatItalianInTheComments

I can't seem to download the updated class, clicking on the link just gives me an "expired URL" error message :( Is this just me? Or are the links down?

Aviva

Fuck me. Guess I gotta read the 2024 PHB no matter what. Too bad I gifted it digitally to my DM. lmao Thanks for the heads up on ritual casting, y’all. Really appreciate it.

Ollie Cook

For me both the links say "expired URL" :(

Ollie Cook

it says the same for me as well

Aviva

They’re fixing typos and such. Probably temporary, as I just downloaded both maybe an hour ago.

Aviva

That sounds like homebrew with your DM territory. Could be a fun very limited thing to play around with a la the framework that the most important and influential people in the world aren’t necessarily the most powerful.

Aviva

Curse of the Grasping Green No more difficult terrain or disadvantage on being restrained or knocked prone. Even though they have to make a strength saving throw to rip off the vines, they aren’t physically hampered by them staying on. No added protection coming at them at close range, while other changes to the coven do seem to encourage a more front or second line vibe. Eep. And like thorn whip to poison spray change, it feels more Poison Ivy and less Grasping Green. What were the horrifying plant monsters Orima sent to choke the life out of Suvi and her allies? The last version felt like a mortal’s pale imitation, in a good way. Plus there’s the very limited uses, and now it eats up your reactions. Can the leeched HP be given to yourself?* In other words, does “another“ refer to the witch who cast it or the target? Or sneak in a self-heal as the 2nd if the target is in the veil? Haha—I’m scared for my witch. *Edit: the change log specifies that the heals are for allies. Also, “when the creature takes damage” refers to a single attack, correct? Not all damage in one PCs turn? Odd to make this such a long effect. My party can pin down some weakling and pepper them with damage. Drop a mass heal that includes them and siphon some back off for us. Sadistic much? Haha The last version felt more “green,” or maybe just reminds me more of Hakea’s lush sanctum in Indri’s palace. Did folks feel it was OP?

Aviva

Coven of the Green change log You noted taking away Thorn Whip, but didn’t mention that you replaced it with Poison Spray. Commentary ahead! Feels less plant-oriented green flavor, and goes with the overall feeling of pushing this coven more into melee range. I haven’t played with this version yet, but my gut reaction says sad face.

Chris V

V3.1 is live for me BUT the link where it says "the NEW and UPDATED Witch Class" is dead. If you scroll down past the credits there should be another link to the file directly that says "witch-class-v3.1-playtest.pdf" that works for me

Aviva

Feels like an oversight with the subclass choice level shift.

Aviva

RIP Green Gifts (mostly) and nerfed Wild Growth/Gifts I’m bummed to see so much of the coven of the green flavor fall away without most of Green Gifts. Tweaked poison resistance at level 6, and the general notion of con save boosting tea in Deep Roots (less the community-building ritual of having tea together) were keepers. We lost the hands-on practical skills that have come up so much in WWW and fireside chats in the forms of kit proficiencies, foraging for herbs or growing them from seed for potion brewing, and the abilities to nurture cuttings and use them as arcane foci. Anybody else having Feelings about those particular changes? I’m more interested in thoughts on this rather than trying to get a jump on the feedback survey. :)

Aviva

Warder’s Tocsin The dim reflection is if the divinatory spell’s caster, right? Not the tocsin’s caster/creator visible to those physically near it? I’m sleep deprived and feel like this should be obvious but I’m waffling. :D

Ivo the Mad Sorcerer

I'm very confused by some of the changes to curses. I like the new curse effects that can be inflicted by retributive curses, but it seems like now spells that are listed as "curses" are functionally identical to any other spell. Is there something that sets "curse" spells apart from regular spells that I'm missing?

Ivo the Mad Sorcerer

Yeah I'm kind of with you, I might keep playing a v1 witch instead

Ren

just so you know the link for the class download doesn't work anymore !

Ezekiel Rope

The link is no longer working

Ezekiel Rope

It feels very top heavy and OP on damage at level 3.

Aviva

RIP Granny Lyra and her sassy possum ways. 🪦

worldsbeyondnumber

Return return, come back to the light. Take what is yours by name and by right. The link works now.

Mason Atkinson

Yeah the changelog said that curse spells were a subclass thing now, but the curses in the coven abilities aren’t connected to that list at all

Maggie!

I got to play with the changes this past weekend and just want to say getting the muzzle curse off on a dragon before it got to use its breath weapon was actually the highlight of my d&d life. Loving the changes!

Aviva

I know it would be obnoxious, but I really wish we could tag WBN in this moment.

Aviva

How so?

Aviva

If somebody does, please encourage anyone who uses it to join the WBN Fireside or buy the class once it’s available a la carte. Support the design team and they’re fantastic work! 🖤

Finn Farechild

I wish they hadn’t taken away using wisdom for claw witch’s attacks. Also wish they just have them a 2nd attack at level 6 and didn’t make them have to use their natural weapon

Finn Farechild

I wish weirding lasted on longer than a minute

Wildmage Press

You still use Wisdom because it's a melee SPELL attack!

Wildmage Press

I personally have thought about it as something that could just be posted online for free, but that's a team decision so no promises!

anouk

I was looking over it and I was wondering the same thing. On top of that the feature "Steady Will" in "On the Hunt" of the Coven of the Claw Subclass states that you cannot lose concentration on Curse Spells, when you don't even need concentration for spells anymore. Like you said, I don't see any difference in the Curse Spells and normals spells

anouk

"Steady Will" in the feature "On the Hunt" of the Coven of the Claw Subclass states that you cannot lose concentration on Curse Spells upon taking damage, even though you don't even need concentration for curses anymore. I have also read multiple times now, that the Curse Spell table works with some of the subclasses now, but I didn't see any features (in the Coven of the Claw Subclass, since I wanted to play that one) that actually need the table. There is also still the typo in the Curse Spell table of "Spellwarping Curse" being a level 4 Spell.

Finn Farechild

I’m aware. What I’m saying is that if I want to make a witch that uses a weapon I have to worry about making sure I have a good strength or dex so they are affective with said weapon. Whereas before I could have a witch with a staff and not have to multi class and such for them to effectively and more easily use said weapon

Finn Farechild

Also the capitalized spelling of the word ‘spell’ is unnecessary, condescending, and insulting

Chris Kagamine

Do the exhaustion levels for Veil of Green: Green dreams go away naturally? In the Episodes, it seems that once the veil goes away, so do the exhaustion levels. But, as written, this seems like you can infinitely change where the veil is to give every enemy exhaustion, and it doesn't go away until sleep or powerful healing spells. Unless exhaustion changed with 2024

anouk

I think it is also quite unclear if the Spell Private Sanctum last indefinitely in the Willful Santum or if you have to expend a spell slot every day to keep it standing.

Sealee

Will there be more covens added?

Conor

Agreed - core class got improved, but all the subclasses got nerfed hard (and they weren't particularly unbalanced honestly)

Conor

Feels like individual subclasses lost a lot of flavor/direction, but the core class improved a ton, at least! I still want to play a witch but the nerfs to subclasses make it a lot harder to choose now since they each lost some of what makes them fun.

Brendan

Clarifying question: The Coven of the Claw's Crimson Gift allows you to calculate AC as 10 + Wis + Dex + light armor (?) but normally you can only calculate armor 1 way: either 10 + Dex + Armor or something else like the Monk's 10 + Dex + Wis. If the intention is to allow Dex + light armor + Wis, perhaps it would be worth adding a clarification? Either "you may still wear light armor while benefitting from this feature" or re-writing the feature to something like "While wearing light or no armor, you may add a bonus to your AC equal to your Wisdom modifier." As it stands, it is unclear whether it is meant to stack with armor because features like that usually don't. Also, dang that's a good feature: giving a Claw Witch an AC cap of 22 before items is 2 higher than a plate wearer and equal to a Barb. On a class with Shield, no less!

Olive_NQaKa

Hi, the Retributive Curse feature is labeled level 2 on the table but level 1 later on. Which is correct ? Thank you :)

Mariel Fechik

Has anyone successfully created a homebrew class of this on dnd beyond? I really want to play a witch in my upcoming campaign but not sure what the best way to go about it is since we’re using dnd beyond!

anouk

As far as I've seen you can only create subclasses on dnd beyond. but if there is a possibility, i would totally do it

Griffin Buswell

One issue I'm seeing: Fierce Familiar allows you to cast Call to the Hunter without a spell slot, but in the Call to the Hunter spell, the number of attacks is based on the level of the expended spell slot. In the case where Call to the Hunter is cast without a spell slot, how many attacks should the allied hunter get? Should it be automatically heightened to your max spell slot level? That's probably how I'll run it, but hopefully that gets specified in future updates to this.

Aviva

🤞🤞

Aviva

Deep breaths, Finn. Emphasis used in corrections and clarification is often helpful, and is neither condescending nor insulting. In the previous witch, the “quick build” suggested a high dex or con after wis. It left the door open for finesse and ranged weapons (in a pinch, in my mind). Even still, the “Coven of the Claw” suggests an emphasis on natural weapons and sheer ferocity a la Grimore. This is a play test. It’s designed and released by these folks putting in considerable time and expertise. They put it out here for our benefit, and to receive feedback. Our thoughts are much more likely to be well received and considered if we treat them with respect and kind consideration.

Aviva

Oh snap. I haven’t been looking closely at the Claw coven. That’s bananas.

Finn Farechild

I don't think I was disrespectful or rude in my previous comment, maybe a little frustrated but I don't think I was disrespectful. I just liked that particular feature from the Coven of the claw. Please tell me if I'm wrong, I didn't mean any rudeness.

Seb

Love the class and am very excited to play it in an upcoming campaign! Just wanted to point out a typo I caught, and sorry if it's already been spotted -- in the new witch spells table, the classes for Create Poppet aren't alphabetized. Thanks for putting together an amazing class!

Brendan

Usually if not specified, a spell is cast at its base level. For an analogue, check out the Fey Reinforcement feature on the Fey Wanderer Ranger, who can cast Summon Fey once/day for free without a slot: they do so at the base 3rd level cast.

Brendan

Broader question: in a D&D setting with both, how do you imagine Witches and Hags relating to each other? Are Hags Fey/fiendish imitations of Witches? Cautionary tales? An entirely different parallel evolution of the trope?

Dandy Dandy

Very sad to see the spell Other Shoes not survive the revisions. Can we get a peek by the curtain on why?

Micah

I agree with all of this. I've been building my Green witch boy the last few months for a campaign starting in January, and when this update dropped I was surprised at how much of the coven seemed overhauled. It felt like a lot of fun little flavor things got removed (RIP to the cute little overnight garden). I'm lucky in that my DM is very open to making changes to anything to make a game more fun, so we're going to be sitting down and going over the two versions of the classes to pick which parts of both make for the most fun character to play

Aviva

I love that idea, Micah. I’ll ask my DM about hybridizing the two versions of the Coven to keep more of the flavor. He’s a big fan of playing for fun and the Rule of Cool. We’re lucky to have such rad DMs. 😎

2026-09-08 21:00 I was updating my player's sheet with the new playtest and noticed some confusing wording. On Uncanny Jinx, "Whenever the target makes a D20 **Test**, it must subtract 1d4 from the total". What is meant by test? is it checks only? saves? any d20 roll made? For the moment Im applying to checks and saves, but I'm curious what the intended design choice was, or how you all chose to interpret it
2024-11-13 02:47

Just_Another_Joseph

D20 Test is a term used in the 2024 Player’s Handbook. Refers to the 3 main D20 rolls made in the game: ability checks, attack rolls, and saving throws. So, if something affects D20 tests, it would affect all 3.

Chris Larsen

I also missed this and was very happy to learn lol.

chillinglikeshilling

I know you're probably going to put out another survey later for feedback on the updates but I just wanted to pop in and say I've really enjoyed the changes! I'm playing Coven of The Green and while I enjoyed the initial play test, it felt a little unwieldy at times and I felt that I personally couldn't make the most of it. Having the simplified curse options for each Coven is great and I've definitely been taking advantage of it more. Also before tokens had been good but my party didn't really feel a lot of pressure to use them which meant they tended to build up. Now with the limit it feels much more important to track who has what and if they've used it

Wildmage Press

What Brendan said! A spell is cast at its base level unless otherwise specified.

Wildmage Press

Level 2! Download the updated version attached to this post for a fixed PDF. :)

Aviva

The FAQ still links to the OG witch class. ☺️

Hey Hannah! I've noticed some table formatting/character formatting discrepancies in different parts of the document available at the end of this post (the file named witch-class-v3.1-playtest.pdf). Namely, I noticed some alignment discrepancies on the cells in the Witch Features table, times when Witch is capitalized and times when it is not (I noticed that sometimes this has to do with whether the word was referring to the regular noun witch/witches/witch's or the proper noun Witch/Witches/Witch's, but it's inconsistent), etc. How would I point these individual things out in case they need to be addressed?

Geno

Can a familiar use a witch token ?

Aviva

The Wracking Curses feature isn't in either the updated playtest or the change log. Was it meant to disappear along with the new non-spell Retributive Curse mechanic, or an oversight with the class features now broken out by level? The new RC feature gains new curse options and longer duration with Improved and Greater Retribution, but the curses themselves and uses don't scale up as you level.

Aviva

At the end of the 1st paragraph under "Level 1: Witchcraft Tokens" it says, "They also empower their familiars to aid them in spellcasting." I don't see another way that tokens would empower familiars unless they can use them. However, I'm not sure how to reconcile that with, "Once created, a creature holding the token can cast the spell from it..." Does wearing or carrying a token count as "holding?" My weasel is awesome, but I'm not sure how well she can hold a cupcake in those tiny paws.

Aviva

The 2024 rules still use concentration.

Geno

That’s how I interpreted it as well. I have a little goat familiar that I could fasten a necklace token. Mechanically giving your familiar a token with a concentration spell would give your character a way to maintain 2 concentration spells. Thats quite a powerful combination, so I was mostly asking regarding that.

Aaron Bopp

You have to hack it since you can only do subclasses. I use wizard and just add all the witch spells to my spellbook and ignore the wizard mainclass features

Aviva

Missed your reply before! Same most important use case. Here’s hoping we’ll find out. 🤞🏽

Having so much fun playing this class but it is getting a little daunting keeping track of everything getting into higher levels. Has anyone made spell cards for this class? Or have a good format for making your own?

Aviva

I realized much later than Thorn Whip isn't in the SRD! The change makes perfect sense since Poison Spray is the most Green of the options there. :)

Hey, witchy team! I saw this meticulous post on the WBN subreddit last night. It details u/Turbulent-Part5835's process using the glimpses Brennan has mentioned about Witch's magic. I know there were some canon mentions of spells that aren't in the SRD, but I don't know how well-developed that list was. Just throwing this out there in case the idea of sharing a full spell list is still on the table for y'all. :) https://www.reddit.com/r/WorldsBeyondNumber/comments/1e4cc7a/update_expanded_witch_spell_list_plus_curses/

Heyo!! Found a small typo on Coven of the Claw: Level 6 Fierce Familiar has no space between "You" and "Can". It's spelled "youcan"

Kaisa Wallace-Moyer

I've just started playing witch and it's very fun! But I noticed on the coven of the claw crimson gift feat that it increase HP by 2 and then 1 more for each level of witch after that. Is this a holdover from getting subclass at level 2? It seems like we should get 3 HP since this is third level. Thank you!!!

Ozymandius

Are Indri and Mirara of the same coven subclass?

Hello! Since the survey is closed, I have a question about green witch's level 14th's feature, Tangled Tread. It said "if failed the creature is unable to move outside the area this turn". Does "move outside" exclude ability or spell like Misty Step? I really love this ability's flavor but my poor non-native ass can't fully grasp this feature's limitation😂. Thanks a lot for your great work!

The Wizard Cass

Teleporting via something like misty step is not movement. So, rules as written, it looks like you could teleport out.

Clare Robertson-Quinn

A question on the coven of the green’s emanations, there’s no time limit or per day limit or anything listed, is that correct? Seems extremely powerful in that wording.

Lucy Kay

Has anyone made the witch class into a JSON file for Fifth Edition Character Sheet?

Aaron Cottrell

Working on a witch right now. The last paragraph of the spellcasting section says that curses (shown in the table) can be imbued with extra potency. What feature makes those spells better?

Capt Jack

A little behind the curve here, but I have a player interested in playing a Witch and I'm trying to add the Claw Subclass to DnD Beyond so they can use it. Spells wise, which class does it fit best with, spells wise (more than fine adding all of them just to have access to every spell and then limit their spell list from there, but would be cleaner to know what Witch started as or pulls the most from)?

SheydWitch

Also seeking an existing character sheet for this, did anyone ever get back to you?

Rachel

Very late to the party, but does anyone know if there's any differences between this "playtest" version and the one anyone can buy on the main WBN patreon page?

Ken Rokos

I too have that question.

Jared T. Murphy

are witches in WWW universally non-male? Perhaps this is a bit gauche to ask, given the progressive nature of creator and audience alike, but my curiosity remains - when it comes to witches, media traditionally portrays as the gendered female counterpart to the stereotypically gendered "wizard". However, to me, Wizard, especially in D&D feels very far from implying "male" solely. Also, in real life, there are many male practitioners of witchcraft/occult/arcane, etc. etc. in history. While I doubt that WBN would say "no" I'm curious if the spirit of it is aimed and chiefly intended for those who identify with the divine feminine. TLDR if I am not a "she" is the Witch class not for me?~ Honestly happy either way. Cheers!

iprix

They talked about this in a fireside and a rough summary is that they recognized an importance and power in witches being a very female role in culture and folklore and while there isn't any rule against male witches in Umora, and there's in fact probably a bunch out there, we are as a WWW audience going to meet a hundred female witches before seeing a male witch.

Jared T. Murphy

Thank you for this thoughtful reply! Longtime fan of the podcast, finally joining the fireside- any idea which epsiode, or at least roughly where in the stream of episodes it is?

Drea

Anyone have a character sheet they wouldn’t mind sharing??! Would love to play a Witch in upcoming campaign but not sure how to go about it on D&D Beyond.

Andrea Crain

In episode 45, around 39 minutes in, Ame casts ceremony as a ritual, which she says takes less time than normal? Ceremony does not seem to be in the witch class sheet at all. Maybe there can be a “perfunctory ceremony” version for just doing the bare minimum to honor a dead person and make their body disappear.

Andrea Crain

Yes everyone wants to know lol

I have a question about when it says you sacrifice a spell slot does that mean you basically just used a spell slot and get that back at long rest or does it mean you now have 1 less total spell slots
