At last... we've reached the epic conclusion of Flight of the Icaron. Thank you Patrons for all of your FANTASTIC queries. Erika and Lou took on a record number of them in today's fireside chat for your listening pleasure. Exclusive information dropped aplenty, folks.

And as a reminder... make sure to keep tuning in on Tuesdays.

Our new epic campaign, SOLARI, starts next week. Keep an eye out for some teasers this week! We cannot wait for you to hear what we've been cooking.

so sad to think this is the first and therefore last time we'll have Lou comment on the one One-Shot he'll ever DM for WBN 😔

Primadonna08

I loved this one 💕 I hope he DMs again

Erica Klein-Meisenhelter

I wish this one was longer!! So much of this universe and the details of the story I would have loved to explore. Hope Lou DMs again soon, he did absolutely wonderfully and I loved it.

Sven the Scribe

Can't wait for the 'oops, all Slideball' sequel (potential crossover with Cram Daniels)

Dream Wizard Kyle Arca

SPACE. CRAM. 2: SLIDEBALL!? Bring back Cram Daniels?? 😎 Might be fun!

JaNay Larsen

Lou and Erika let's gooooo! One question in so far, and just wanted to pop over to say I appreciate Lou answering for the other players. 😂 💯 So good.

The Wizard Sparrow

Almost 2 hours…what a treat!!! I just love Tuesday 🦊🔥❤️🤗

Dream Wizard Kyle Arca

They've posted weekly for a while now. What more do you want from a group of 4 actors and a sound engineer who are all incredibly busy?

Gingie

Thank you gang! It means the world to have storytellers as skilled and as kind as y'all out there

Not even done listening to this episode of FC amd already can say I DESPERATELY NEED A SHIRT THAT SAYS "IF YOU'RE NOT HERE, YOU'RE ELSE"

Aidan Smith

Look, I’m really not trying to be “that fan;” I adore this podcast with all my heart and by no means wish to spur another godforsaken discourse into existence. None of us is party to their production process and I don’t think it’s at all productive to levy demands or criticism based on speculation. That being said, I think it’s okay to express mild disappointment that one or more core members are absent from paywalled content with increasing regularity. As I said above, I’d be happy for them to take more time between releases if it meant everyone were present, but that’s just me voicing my perspective, not a demand or at all telling them what to do. It’s all love ‘round here.

Aouri

Hey they asked my question! Also thanks for pronouncing my name correctly ( Aouri)

Katie

SEQUELLLLL

Ciaran C

I don’t mind it at all! It helps them keep a regular production schedule without being an over-demanding workload. I also like the dynamic that happens in different configuration of the cast. +1 to flexibility all around.

Jordan Jones

Would love to get another fireside for this finale with Brennan and Aabria! Lou really crushed it with his and I need more GM feedback for his debut!

Dream Wizard Kyle Arca

Ngl, I was Dead Set on one of the daughters being the traitor. I'm glad it was who it was because that works better for this short form, I feel. But, maaaaan, you couldn't convince me it Wasn't. 🤣

ChimiChangle

I hate to be the downer, and not that I'm uninterested in Lou and Erika, but to only have 2 out of the 4 cast members to talk about not just the finale but the last 2 episodes? This fireside felt hollow to me.

Dream Wizard Kyle Arca

AVIAN GREEN!? Are you, perhaps, the one and only...Airry Pearry!? Don't worry, I won't tell anyone. It's our secret.

Ewizabeth Herd

Lou!! That description of the sun pass was completely gorgeous!! I’m so glad we got to hear it.

VanillaSilver

So sad that the others weren’t here to celebrate the end of Lou’s first campaign

Blaze

pharaoh bob here, thanks for the answer, that was beautiful! anyway, looking forward ti the sequel. i think we all the the franchising potential! ;)

ChosenOfAeterna

On Mars they’re just called “Bars” and they’re really chalky for some reason.

The Wizard Sardonic

Of course I miss Brennan and Aabria on this fireside chat, but this was an awesome convo with Erika and Lou. Fishcakes was such an interesting character so I'm glad we got some backstory! Maybe (crosses fingers) there will be a chance for Aabria and Brennan to chime in with some thoughts on Flight of the Icaron at a later date 💚

Bryan Phillips

The fireside chat for the Flight of the Icaron - The quest for 30!

nandrusin

Joseph Staten (Director of Cinamatics and one of the main writers of the first several Halo games) said that one of the reasons Halo 2 had Mombasa as a setting is partially because its an equator city! And a big space elevator makes since there. Huge Halo fan, love that it was an inspo, you could definitely feel it!

Punk_Ukulele

Can't wait for the aabria brennan fireside where they answer 31 questions

Witch of the widening horizons

So inspiring to hear Lou’s experiences and reflections on this his first GM outing. I’m preparing to give it a go for the first time too so thank you for helping me build up my courage. X

SpringtidePrince

Maybe just don’t be a downer, then? This bonfire was wonderfully warm and full of beautiful light, not empty at all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ We really need to allow space for content creators to live their lives without complaining about it.

Aubrey

oh i want someone to PLEASE draw/animate the sun Lou describes 😭😭

ChimiChangle

Im glad you and others enjoyed it but I think it should be allowed for me to express my disappointment. I get that they're all very busy. It's their right to do firesides with as many or as few people as they like, and I will provide feedback on the rare occasions that I feel compelled to, in a way that is respectful and not demanding or parasocial.

Ryan Leeson

An honor to have my question answered first and what a lovely answer guys!

Aidan Smith

I really appreciate your broaching this topic in a respectful and thoughtful way. I commented something similar but I deleted it because I think you articulated the sentiment more productively than I did.

TheNBV

I think we need t-shirts that say "If you're not here, you're else" 😂

Rebekah

@ Lou — OKAY FOLLOW UP QUESTION: Is Dr. Amani Cortez at all inspired by Dr. Mae Jemison? She is a real life astronaut who was also a dancer (and she also guest starred on Star Trek and I miiiiight have also had a huge crush on her 😅). As soon as you said Dr. Cortez was a dancer this is all I could think of!

Rebekah

Also lemme just say that whenever Lou wants to do a Thick Afrofuturism Campaign TM I am READY 😍😍😍

Amy Waller

I know its been said a million times but Lou CRUSHED dming this campaign. My ears have been blessed.

PriscillaG

Deep cut. We love to see it.

Matthew

Was it too easy? Uninteresting question. Were the players dissatisfied by the events? Seems like no. I have found that players are rarely dissatisfied by the results of a plan that they themselves made to play to their own strengths, especially when the rolls are hot. Was the audience dissatisfied? I can't speak for everyone but I wasn't.

The Witch of the Written Word

Including the kids in the end made this feel like Armageddon meets Spy Kids and I think that's awesome.

xatlern

I love that a man who styled himself as a "Pharaoh" now has to deal with the fact that his prized creation has styled herself as "Fishcakes." Get wrecked, Gregory. Also Blue Collar Moon Lawyer sounds like a sitcom I would watch the hell out of

Winter

Dropped on the same day my Ursalon plush arrived This is a good day

Kyle Epperson

Agree to disagree Erika. The way the physics and magic work, dictate how the world works. How commerce operates and what is a precious resource and who has it. You don't need to know HOW it works. You need to know why H3 is an important resource in the expanse because it's integral to the politics of the world.

pkaydee

Amazing job, Lou!!! Loved the series, hope to hear more!

Nym

Lou: “We’re going to set a new record today that will not be broken.” Somewhere in the universe Brennan’s competitive antennae twitch. “What’s that I hear? A CHALLENGE??? 👹”

Jackie

Good Morning GM 2

Alex Willging

"Blue Collar Moon Lawyer" sounds like Better Call Saul in Space! This was great, gang!

Primadonna08

I thought it was the daughter tooooooo

Liam van Beurden

There's going to be a Firseside that's just Brennan answering 31 questions

The Wizard Subjudice

Slideball is space!blitzball, and you can't convince me otherwise!!

Kenzie

🕯️Manifesting Cram Daniel in a slideball tournament 🕯️

The Wizard Solace (Sherichu)

Man it’s not everyday I see someone mention the author of my favourite book! Still waiting on the movie though…

The Wizard Solace (Sherichu)

I think the options were the two of them, or have it not come out for quite a while. As Lou said, Aabria is injured so not up to recording. How long she takes off would depend on what happened. And Brennan is on parental leave so will not be recording for a few months at least.

Felix

"when you're here, you're family—if you're not here, you're else."

Fxd Gear Queer

I know there was a lot of thought and prep as building blocks, but Lou effectively pulling a Murph-Level final encouter on the fly is pure competence porn 🔥

confusedtealseal

Thanks Lou for inadvertently reminding me about the book On a Pale Horse 😂 such a good book I gotta reread now. This campaign was incredible btw

Luccan

The finale felt perfect, cinematic even. Fishcakes realizes she has a little family of her own, Kiki realizes there are some lines even being from Grey Space doesn't blur, and Andre gets to help save the world as an engineer, justifying the work he out into the Icharon as a symbol of unity and honoring the legacy of his friend

A. Godfrey

well, now I'm thinking about zero gravity surgery. all your scalpels are velcroed down. you make an incision and the blood floats up and blocks your vision. so annoying.

The Wizard Slut

Thank you for answering THE MOST important question for the seventh strongest wizard. Your answer was most satisfying.

Stephen Paul

Really trying to pay attention, read Solari starts next week. Brain struggling to focus on two things at once

I really appreciate when details about how things work in a world like lore, a species, a magic system, the world's physics, etc. are included because that's how I connect with the real world too. It gives the experience meaning and depth it would otherwise lack, and without that I'd be unlikely to feel very immersed in the story. I want stories with TEXTURE to chew on! So I adore when we get the perspective of someone who specializes in the texture of reality, like in this case an engineer.

The Wizard Sardonic

on my second sitting trying to finish this episode, I'm blown away by how long this was and how many questions y'all answered!

TisWhatSheSaid

Bits in service of character and the story. 🫰🫰🫰

Lee Chirtel

Ah, the infamous "Hard" and "Soft" magic topic finally comes up. I actually think that the distiction works reasonably well in SciFi. Some works do pull more from the Physics/Chemistry/Biology side, and some works pull more from the Sociology/Anthropology/Psychology side. I think Blood Music and Pluribus are good examples. They have broadly similar set ups, but very different focuses. I think it works less well for fantasy because there is no external referent system to draw on. Even the most rigorous rules are still arbitrarily selected or agreed to by the participants. I guess you could say that fantasy works or systems that follow strong philosophical or logical rules are more like the "Hard" systems. But the problem is that magic is always asking someone or something to alter reality: and the forces consulted may always decline to help.

Ryan McHugh

Next week Aabria and Brennan put out a six hour long fireside where they answer over 100 questions.

W

T shirt idea: "MARS SUCKS" ...open to notes.

nathan

so a sequel on tranquility sounds super cool and quite easy to set up with all the characters having reason enough to be there at some point, but... slamball space cram double sequel crossover episode??

Tiiryander

@lou&erika if you're thinking about how Fishcakes's mods would interact with her growth, nothing would make my medical schooling more worth it than providing a subject-matter consult on the future of Fishcakes's ferality

Warlock

Give the people what they want!

Lorsnax

Gotta have one of those little liquids vacuums like dentists use during cleanings.

Darklordchuckles

I love the idea of Fishcakes becoming a counsellor at LARP camp. 😃

GoldRyno

Great episode. I cannot wait for Brennan and Aabria to answer 31 questions next fireside!

Bingus2277

HOLY SHIT! HI ERIKA! Thanks for answering my question on public ownership! This campaign inspired me to put more of my values explicitly into my own settings, so cool that yall are doing this

GoldRyno

Thanks. Editing my post I must have misremembered the spelling.

KennedyH

One of my favorite comedy movie examples of bits in service to story are the glass tables in Game Night. Throughout the whole movie, there's a recurring theme of 'something isn't quite right here,' and the glass tables but keeps subverting expectations. Tonally in perfect sync with the film as a whole.

Sy Hoekstra

There’s probably an upper limit, but my take away from this episode is my enjoyment of these episodes, already quite high, increases with questions answered 📈

Blake Cipperly

Has the Timeline that they talked about get released yet? I dont remember seeing it

Shannon Ho

The Icaron historical record is available as a PDF download in the Patreon fireside post for eps 2&3!

Blake Cipperly

Ah I did not know it was attached. I assumed it would be its own post! Thank you!

Paul Keene

I really loved this campaign cause it was my first time hearing Lou DM, and as much as I miss Umora I think a long form Lou campaign after Solari would be really hype. I love his style of DMing, and I crave MORE! MORE LOU!!

TheGlassBook

Love you all, big fans of your work! A bit of creative feedback, although breathing techniques are great life habits for calming emotions they kill the stakes when story telling. A large part of the enjoyment of a story is riding the emotions with the characters.

Jenn with two Ns

Lou, this world was amazing. It was such a blast to hear your DM style and fall in love with a whole new world. I can only *imagine* what you would weave with a longer campaign. Thank you so much for all of the work you put in and I hope we get to head back to the Icaron someday

Sayre

Oh my god Fishcakes’ origin story!!!! This universe is already so crazy rich with lore after only one short campaign. Would LOVE to see more of this in the future!

mars

This little campaign was so rich and truly felt like an action movie- and I want to watch it again and again and again. Incredible work all around.

Big D-Meanor

“Ivanka? No Ivanka’s the president’s wife” 😬😬

The Wizard Sparrow

Just a quick note …my folks visited and brought my Eursolon plushie, fox key chain and the official Ahoo Hoo Crackle Crackle shirt…THANK YOU WBN for creating such amazing items🦊❤️🤗🔥

Little Cheese Confettis

Strongly disagree. Look into the concept of ‘ma’. All great storytellers know you need a moment of pause and quietness before ramping up the energy again. Lou, fantastic campaign and wonderful storytelling!!

Photograph me like one of your French cars

I imagined slide ball as something played in 1/6th gravity (because of Tranquility) with a rectangular court but curved walls on the long sides to allow for acrobatics and elevation changes impossible on earth, sort of like a half pipe but on a larger scale and with a larger flattened area at the bottom.

bitterbaldguy

Lou, you full on read the room and made a great campaign. DMs make shit up ALL. the time, we have to. Listen to your players and have a general idea. Love you brother

James

Idk if there is some bias in my own head that I’m missing but for some reason I view Aabria and Brennan as the more on the rails parts of the fireside, so there is something so ironic and funny about the fireside with Lou and Erika where you would expect 0 rails and instead it’s the most on rails fireside ever to the point they have a challenge number of questions to answer

thomas henderson

Haven't heard the talkback yet but I'm in the middle of e4 and can I just say, as a mathematician who has a passing understanding of science: I watch D20 to watch comedians do simple arithmetic under pressure, and y'all are giving me storytellers doing astrophysics and rocket science, and I'm 👏 here 👏 for 👏 it 👏, i love it and you're doing really good (seriously)

thomas henderson

ok and now I'm on e5 and this might be the clearest setup of "how to run a heist" I've ever heard
