A fun little change to our usual schedule, since some key cast is out of town and far away from microphones at the moment: This week the Fireside Chat is all about the Children's Adventure! (We'll do a double Fireside Chat for eps 3 & 4 after ep4 comes out!).

Join the gang as they dig deep, some say too deep, into all things Children's Adventure. they’ve said previously on either a fireside chat or one of the instagram lives that they recorded the children’s campaign and the first few episodes way back at the beginning of the summer of 2022, and fireside chats I think are recorded only like a day or two after each episode is released, so they’re very far apart

Having just finished the part about Eursulon’s name was only about the ursa part. I’ve studied a decent bit of word parts and noticed the Eu- part which means right/good at the beginning which led to me thinking he was a paladin(before it was dropped). Watching this Children’s adventure was amazing! I’ve been running a D&D campaign for 6 years and am finally coming to the end of it. Out plan for the past year (because we imagined the campaign to have finished by now XD ) was to have everyone play the children of their +20 level characters (at one stage they all broke their “limits” and could move beyond their imagined/destined potential). I have been planning how I will run a mini level zero campaign for them all and listening through this mini children's campaign is so inspirational. I am frantically taking notes while listening to this fireside chat! I loved how you ran everything here Brennen

I’m halfway through episode 4, and did I miss something huge? Why is Suvi all of a sudden an apathetic insufferable prick? Is it simply because she’s spent so long trying to pretend like she fit in with the adults at the citadel that she never took the time to actually grow up and emotionally mature past age 6, or is there some deeper reason she’s a piece of shit to her so called ‘family’ out of the blue? I feel like that was a massive character shift with absolutely no reason given.

I think you're underestimating the stress of the battle/the conditioning of the empire. This battle against an agent of the Dominion is literally what Suvi has been trained for since she was 6, of course she's going to go into robot soldier mode when confronted with a threat so connected to her time at the citadel. That brainwashing goes deep and I'm excited to see her arc concerning it in the future- after all there is a whole decade+ of her life we haven't seen yet.

I guess I understood it as: If you were told a group of people hated you and wanted you dead, and your first real interaction with them reinforced that idea, and then your childhood friend was like "Oh, but I feel empathy for them!" I would also react super negatively. In Suvi's mind, Ame just went to comfort the racist who is crying cause you called them out for their racism

Suvi was raised from 6 years old to be the weapon of an empire. We don't know much about the Citadel yet, but we can guess that they're not that great. I'd also argue that this wasn't sudden at all. We saw the foreshadowing of it in the Children's Adventure, and we out-and-out saw it in her introduction in the first epsidoe. This is absolutely the kind of attitude you'd have if you were raised in the military of an imperial culture.

Honestly not a big fan of the "Brainwashed hitler youth who thinks she's the absolute shit" part of the character but I trust Aabria and the rest of the table. I'm also gleefully awaiting the moment her superiors in the citadel respond to the PR disaster that is her wielding authority

That's not what it's like at all. Ame would ensure that the corpse wouldn't rise again, while Suvi wanted to toss it overboard with no assurances. Empathy for the dead or not, Ame actually had a reason and a plan. Suvi was just puffing her chest and being difficult just to make a point about her personality. It's not a good aspect of the character, but I suppose she could be setting up for future growth. Still, something about the way Aabria has played all of her characters - there's this similar thread of pretentiousness that never gets resolved.

I think that's kinda the point. Suvi was raised by imperial wizards. She was only at the cottage for 1 summer and has since been surrounded by a bunch of arcane users who look down on "hedge mages" and feel it is their duty to fight their stupidity and tradition. Of course that arrogance and bullheadedness was gonna rub off on her. She feels she had to prove herself and that Ame is naive for thinking of someone who attacked her was deserving of anything other than the most humiliating treatment. She's the colonial mindset incarnate and it's great to see how that causes problems when trying to form a community with people with different ideas and experiences. Honestly Aabria as an arrogant wizard is peak D&D and I'm here for it.

hi, year and some months later: that is not the norm and a very unique attack, 99 times out of 100 they damage your HP, but i think like a handful of monsters in the monster manual can damage things like your strength score, intelligence score, charisma, etc. absolutely not the norm. hope this helps for anyone coming back to this years later lol

It is WILD to me that we did a full 5 minutes on Mr Borg before finding the rails, and the pop culture reference was fully teenagers getting drunk. Never, not once, was it Star Trek. This man playing a character obsessed with honey and zero hive queen jokes🐝🟩 That being said, this and the children’s adventure have been such a joy, and solving the confusion on that mushroom spirit’s origin story did ease my brain 💙

One of the reasons why the children's adventure is so magical and works so well is because they are so genuinely authentic. I'm so glad to hear that talked about in here! It can be so hard to take adult characters and work them back to having a children's mindset, and children problems. Like they said, the goat is the perfect bad guy for a kid! (Pun intended) As a mom, I'm seeing this more and more in children's television as I watch with my son. It reminds me of how " Spidey and his amazing friends" was able to rework Spider-Man villains and situations for children. Instead of " Green Goblin" he is "Gobby". Instead of "pumpkin bombs" he has "pumpkin pranks" which are full of sticky, stinky goo. Gobby still tries to get in the way of the community events, and team Spidey still webs him up to save the day. The children's Adventure had such beautiful storytelling from a children's point of view, and children problems: trying to clean up the mess from cleaning Eursulon before Grandmother Wren came back, adventuring through the woods, playing with a stick as a sword, and especially trying to hide all the cool stuff they found in the Attic! Wonderful storytelling, beautiful characters ❤️

When we met the mushroom spirit in the campaign I assumed that since it was quickly followed by the 250 year reveal that sir curran dropped the mushroom when he died in the battle but the explanation you give here makes alot more sense. Love the world building of this campaing and i cant wait to get into the adult section.
