Bryn

I just got done with taylors ep!

ngaire

CUSTOM WIZARD SUBCLASS!! I didn't see anyone placing that bet on Tumblr!

Katlynn

These late episode drops make having insomnia feel worth it

ngaire

Very glad to have something to listen to on my night shift, thank you

Dallas A Forever GM

Oooooo this is what the people have been waiting for!!! And by people, I mean me, this is what I’ve been waiting for!! Much excites

Nahda

45min for leveling up, and there will be a second part ? I am intriged ! I guess there will be chaos

Kyrik[TheSilent]

Is there a specific reason Eursulon only gets two Paladin spells instead of 5 (CHA mod + half Paladin level) ? And wouldn’t his spell dc be 14 rather than 12 (CHA mod + prof + 8) ?

Sil

Faaammm... PLSPLSPLS, you gotta give my AU-East-Coast beach-ass-having-life- vessel, a Sea Witch Coven. Of the Wave, or The Deep, The Tide OR JUST SOMETHING, PLEEEAASSEEE

Olive_NQaKa

Will the wizard subclass be available ? ?

Gysdaj

Oh cannot wait to see this wizard subclass ! 🤩

Fia (but not Boginya)

Now my question, and it's very not important, is it a U2 reference or specifically a Simpsons reference?

Kate Olive Art

Love the new subclasses! Can’t wait to learn all about them!

ngaire

ohh i LOVE "of the Tide" that sounds so cool! i'm from nz where everything is coastal so i'll second this plea, hopefully one of the subclasses in the works is marine

Lara

I LOOOOVEEE leveling utz stuff like this!! I'm very glad you guys went with a fixed Paladin subclass for Eursulon, and i absolutely can't wait to see the homebrewed Citadel subclass and the Witch class!!💖💕 every time there's WWWO updates, it makes my day~ also can't wait for Wizard vs. Witch familiar shenanigans omg

Brak

I spent the entire runtime wondering how the Utz logo had managed to get passed my ad blocker. 🤣

Smiththebat

I didn’t realize you guys made a whole Witch class?! I thought it was just a flavoured Druid?

Faith Price

Brennan disallowing silvery barbs feels like the natural progression from the ravening war lol

Zinnia133

Can’t believe my favorite actual play podcast is trying to get in the pocket of big utz

worldsbeyondnumber

We promised a BONE CONE EXPLOSION and you KNOW we gonna deliver, babyyyyy

Elitheuz

Your coven is... GREEN

David Paynter

I'm excited for arc 2! *Muppet flails*

Alec

and calamity tbh

Michelle Spurgeon

I think it's level 1 to level 2 not episode 1 of 2

AbsoluteMission

any adventurer under level 3 can’t cook… all they know is fish slurry , charge they spells, cackle, be glamoured, eat utz chip & lie

Alec

Okay so we're gonna level up moreeeeeeeee frequently which is greattttt but I don't trust you Brennannnnnn I fully expect it to be like THIRTEEN episodes instead of 14 😭😭😭

Alec

Genuinely though, there has been a Worlds Beyond Number hole shape in my heart these past few months. These trickled down updates have been lovely but it has not been enough. Thank you guys for all that you do for this wonderful story, game, and podcast. I cannot wait to see what happens next, and I already wish it was next Wednesday. Thanks y'all 💙🐸

Michael Johnson

The audible yell I released when Brennan said “let’s take this off mic” with the thoughts on “find familiar” was enough to get the driver next to me to look at me in concern.

Xavier Kadrmas

I hope they didn't record this whole next arc not realizing paladins prepare spells too

Alec

Honestly the custom wizard subclass makes it even MORE worth it to be on Patreon, that way we get it here first AND also for the show we have a much more classic home game experience 🥹We stan our citadel wizard

Merlin

My house rule on this the same, though I've been experimenting with having it give -1d4 and +1d4 instead of dis/advantage, and so far I'm less upset (at least as the GM).

Natsuka

Of course Lou was perfectly okay with how long they've been at level 1 😹 "And I'm not even keeping track of exp; I'm just being mean ... My PCs would have jumped over the moon [to be allowed to level up] for how long I was like, 'No, I think we need to be level 2 for a couple more sessions, guys.'" - Supreme Crit Justice Pro Tempore Lou Wilson

Diamondarrel

Hey can I get the full name of the designer who improved on the Protection fighting style? I can't figure it out from the audio :3

THEY Agenda Productions

Y'all are wild 😂😂 hoping Utz hears this and reaches out. Next week cannot be here soon enough!!

RNietzsche

Oh god, tunnel fighter? Eurselon of infinite power.

Ricky the Moist

Has the witch pdf been released at all? I have a player who wants to play something witchy and my home brew ideas don’t feel adequate

kragonaught

can’t believe ‘mitigate harm’ is now a canon witch subclass feature /j

Erik Hanson

I'm curious whether the Magical Secrets are intended to be available to other existing classes as the homebrew rules develop.

Michael C. Hollis

Jk, it just changes the trigger (on a hit, not declared before the roll), but it’s still disadvantage, not damage reduction like Interception.

Tommy Deibel

If Find Familiar is in Suvi's book, can't she always cast it as a ritual?

Quinn Hardie

I came to ask the same question! Also, as a Paladin, he would be a prep caster similar to Ame and chose spells after a long rest, not a fixed list. But I also get it if he'd rather limit the choices, choice paralysis can be real for prep casters haha

jbyrd

Cackle cackle

Jordan T. Maxwell

"Can I have Fireball?" "No." "That's fair." 🤣 Also, amazed nobody made a "cackle cackle" joke when that came up. 😜

Brian Bunton

As someone who's never played D&D, I would love to see an updated character sheet so I can figure out what all of this is.

J Lovensheimer

GIVE THE FOX MORE HIT POINTS AT THIS LEVEL UP PLS

abardnamedkate

I want the witch class and wizard subclass soooooo bad now! Ahhhhh I love a fiddlie wizard it is everything I want them to be. ❤️❤️❤️ Such a fun episode I love it and I am so psyched to see what happens on chapter 2!!!!

Sam Thomas

This is perfect and exactly what I wanted, thank you

BakingBad

I’m just hoping the witch class comes out before we go into the planning stage of a campaign I have coming up. I need time to badger my DM into letting me use it

Aaron

I'm glad someone else noticed this. I guess we'll just have to see how it plays out over the arc since they have already recorded so many more eps. Maybe they catch it and fix it later.

Ashley Fryer

Me starting the episode: ooh, 45 minutes, what a gift! Me finishing: not enough!

Daniel Andrés

The search trend on Google for Utz Potato chips spiked so much the moment this dropped. I would send a screenshot of the graph but I can’t.

Zach Turner

So basically they want to combine protection and interception fighting styles right?

Taha Tuncer

Will the wizard of the citadel come out with the witch?

Jack Wilkinson

Would absolutely kill a whole ass human being for the wizard subclass pdf

Wverms

Because of how the classes/subclasses work Suvi and Ame are quite literally prepared vs. reactive.

Sean Kelley

It is so incredibly wonderful to hear about a 'Wizard' wizard subclass after awaiting something like that for so long. As long as I can remember, there was always a subclass for every class that made it feel like 'more' of the flavor was being fulfilled, like Champion/Battlemaster for Fighter or Berserker for Barbarian or Open Hand for Monk. The Order of Scribes wizard was getting there but I never really felt as though there was more wizard in the wizard... more like there was some coattail chasing of the sorcerer, and there's nothing wrong with that if you need a new coat! Nonetheless, this episode was absolutely fantastic and I'm super eager along with everyone else here to see more of the wizard hubris being rightfully earned.

Riley Crowder

I would love to know why thematically and mechanically Brendan decided to disallow Silvery Barbs? Is it a balance issue, or just a 'this is an annoying spell' or is a more thematic reason. (A valid answer obviously is: 'Secrets!!')

Cody Hasselbring

Man this is the BOCO I LOVE. Let’s get down and dirty in the RULES. Let’s roll HIT DICE. Let’s talk SPELLS THAT REQUIRE CONCENTRATION

zack proudfoot

The witch class being so soon. Should we be holding our breath for a drop today or relax so it can be a nice surprise a different day?

Casey Furtado

Such a delight listening to this buncha cuties level up! Thankful for this bone cone 🤝

Michael C. Hollis

I’m guessing balance/annoying, but had the same question

Ryan McHugh

Lou at the end just realized they almost did a whole episode on the rails and decided he could not let that stand.

Stephen

MAN i wanna play a citadel wizard so bad now. I take back everything I ever judged Suvi for, those are some sweeeet mechanics

Boston

So proud of Brennan banning silvery barbs, hate that spell

Twisting Deceit

I'm so happy yall released this!! I absolutely love these crunchy level up episodes and I love hearing what people gain and take upon leveling up! The Witch class and Citadel subclass sound so fun!

Sven the Scribe

My money is on 'disrupts the flow and pace of narrative' more than anything else. We've seen that Brennan and crew love them some broken shit when it *fits* the story and world they're in. But hearing a result, deciding to force a reroll, waiting for the new result, *then* describing all that happens gets a bit messy especially in a show that tends to edit out extraneous things.

Riley Crowder

Seems possible. I wont deny I also asked this, so if it gets on the Pod...it has to be said out loud and Aabria, Erika, and Guest get to rag on Brennan for a bit before he can answer. ;)

Nyctef

Oh my gosh I CANNOT WAIT until arc 2! Such a fun level up session and so looking forward to the next one :)

Dungeon Master

In order to deal with the expertise issue, I wonder if you do something like… “when you’re choosing your proficiency bonuses from your class, you may choose one proficiency that you already have (from race, background, or a class proficiency that you’ve already selected) in order to gain expertise.”

Nathan Levine

I love the decision to say no to silvery barbs, but edit the protector style to make it a better silvery barbs. Perhaps Brennan was just keeping it out of Aabria's hands? This was a fantastic listen that was funny and full of fun lore. Aabria's reasoning for taking the second spell she did had a fascinating and clever thought path. I wish more actual play/podcasts did these kinds of 'behind the scenes' type shorts because this was delightful.

Dungeon Master

Basically expending two proficiencies to get an expertise. And because it would be one from your class list, it would hopefully incentivize people specializing along their class lines, ala barbarians getting expertise in athletics.

Dungeon Master

I agree with the Protection fighting style being bad, but honestly I feel like we gotta talk about Interception as well. Not only does it quickly fall off in utility, but also… you don’t really intercept the hit. Either we increase the reduction and make it so that you take the reduced damage, or we just make the interceptor the new target of the attack.

Dungeon Master

Yeah, I tried reworking it, and it works fairly well (triggering roll is subtracted by your spellcasting mod and the bonus is the same thing instead of disadvantage and advantage) getting rid of the crit-swatting was nice, but also kind of poisoned it? Players really love the feeling of getting to force a reroll on a battle-turning nat 20, but there’s pretty much no way to balance for that. I kind of wish that it was never introduced at all, because it’s so fun to use that you never want to take it away, but you absolutely cannot afford to let them keep it. I wonder about making it a higher level, but I feel like that’s the wrong move too somehow.

Ailyn

I do think that this ability is a bit less powerful than silvery barbs in a few ways, notably you have to be within 5 feet of the target for it to work, so the party has to choose between being spread out and vulnerable to attack rolls or close together and vulnerable to AOEs, taking a reaction away from a martial character also means that they'll get to use opportunity attacks less, granted this doesn't require a spell slot at all

Nathan Levine

I entirely forgot about the distance restriction and complication therein, you're absolutely right.

Seasquidley

In Wanted, they're taking baths in water with wax over them which can definitely read as milky (ew).

Adarsh Nednur

It's infamously unbalanced and can be easy to abuse (https://rpgbot.net/dnd-5es-silvery-barbs/), and I think more than anything it just lessens the stakes/consequences of the narrative as a whole since it kind of puts a ceiling on the downsides PCs might face as a result of any dice roll. I'm sure Brennan trusts the players at the table not to abuse it, but it sucks to feel like you're only facing consequences because you're choosing not to use the trump card you know you have in your hand.

Ryan Flynn

First time commenting! Loved hearing about the thinking behind some of the homebrew choices. The magical secrets and all the levers for Wizard launched me on a train of thought that resulted in messaging my DM and homebrewing some extra toys for my Artificer to play with. Crackle crackle!

Jack Reddy

When I heard Brennan banned Silvery Barbs, you cannot imagine the joy that filled my heart

Connor

Here for the slowly expanding lore of the fireside chats 😂

Thomas Flott

The joy in my heart when Brennan said "the first of 19"

Jerrome

The idea that fox cannot be one shot is going to save fans and players so much stress

Kole Tomić

wowie, the wizard of the citadel subclass is COOL. hits all the flavor points, with the secrets, spellcasting can feel like computer programming. And wizards are just fantasy STEM majors. Here's some ideas with secret of contingency: -Subtle spell (via metamagic adept) x contingency -- put a even-on-a-save-you-take-damage kinda spell on a monarch you can see and set the trigger to be the start of their speech for a super cinematic regicide at no cost! -contingency counterspell -- this counterspell does not count towards your reaction so you can really ruin your DMs day by not allowing the super cool villain to cast that 5th level spell the DM was all giddy about at the beginning of the session -contingency shield on yourself and then reaction shield to be literally invulnerable

BRex

Legit fistbumped when Brennan said that he disallowed Silvery Barbs! Hate that spell!

Kieran Palmer

Aren't those changes Brennan talked about for the Protection Fighting Style just the Interception Fighting Style?

mguin

Primary vs secondary sources in wizard things? I LOVE this (also NERD wizards!

William Brandes Stoddard

The Interception fighting style is also amazing, but it reduces damage rather than applying a modifier to the attack roll. It comes down to whether you want to try to block the whole hit or just accept the hit and reduce the damage it deals.

Rabbit

Yep, that’s the guy.

Allandnot

I appreciate you too <3

Matt Hartt

I think there are going to be some consequences for the gang forgetting about ghost. Suvi promised that she would set up a way for her to go to the citadel and then just didn't. Could be very interesting down the road

Tim Sprung

Hey. I love the wizard of the Citadel subclass and can’t wait to read all of the secrets. How does Secret of Contingency interact with Concentration spells (I.e. Hold Person). When would it start from the cast or from activation. And same for duration.

Mike Chapman

Thanks, came here to find out this exact thing.

Corben Barker

Quick note about Aabria's Find Familiar, Since it's a ritual spell, Suvi doesn't need to have it prepared anyway, she can just cast it.

Coliopod

now I want to see the Wizard of the Citated subclass, pleaaaaaase

Rafael C

Lou so frequent now (I do love it so much!!!). Also, Brennan is so father (/affectionate .. /maybe a lil more than that.. hi Brennan) Interesting that Lou asked about Silvery Barbs for Warlocks......... What Are You On About, Sir? Also I love that the Witch class knows all their spells and prepares some for the day like Druids and Clerics, I feel like it working like this allows for so much fun gameplay and strats, very Emily Axford-core. (Wish you guys would o a Emily-core kind of read-through of the Witch class and the Wiz of the Citadel subclass too though, just for shits and giggles but also your opinions and the decision making process and bts info abt that, maybe even with the designers of those!! Also if you ever did that, would love to hear from each of you which kind of Witch [lol] character you would wanna make, like their vibes and aesthetic and what parts of folklore witch tropes and pillars you would adhere to, and what subclass they'd be!! I think it would be a neat discussion, I for sure have a weird character design that I've been waiting to map onto the Witch class - will probably comment on the actual class post y'all made though!) I'm so glad I get to hear my little buddies talking abt leveling up their characters ;; (the parasocial relationship is strong w this one but I shall resist it) OMG I LOVE THE SECRET OF CONTINGENCY OH MY FUCKING GOD. I FEEL LIKE THE WITCH CLASS SHOULD GET IT BUT MAYBE ITS JUST MY IDEAL CLASS CLOMBO. (also Aabria🤝Emily Loving Little Spell Levers. sorry was just listening to naddpod). God this Secret of Contingency is perfectttt fuck action economy I love it I hate it I'm a scheming little bitch. Secret of the Ricochet is also deliciously practical and simple and effective. And Secret of Discovery is also very good but not op and incredibly situational! Which balances well with the other two! Anyway can't wait for Aabria's secret Citadel doggy or whatever cause tis probably not even close to being a doggy. And its prob more complex / character arc-y than that lol, maybe her dads' "doggy"? idk but I'm Hype!!! Bye buds, ahoohoo!

Rafael C

I mean, its not as strong as Silvery Barbs of course, but at least as a Paladin, if they choose to be close to each other they get not only Eursulon's uses of the Defensive Fighting-Style but also his aura (that isn't anywhere near a Silvery Barbs but it's sure something, and at least these things stack eventually :v)

Rafael C

(also yeah I Do believe Ame used Cackle maybe once in arc 1, at the latter half of it iirc)

Quentin

Just have to tell you guys, it’s not often something hits me with such raw emotion, but you did it. The stories you can sit down and spin in real-time are amazing, and Taylor my GOSH you are this world’s Breath. Ya’ll made me cry, and all I can say is THANK YOU MAY I HAVE ANOTHER?!

Jim Jam Flim Flam

I really like the idea of having 'sat' in a single level for a full arc, made it feel so realistic and worth it now that they've finally levelled up! 😄😄

John Cupp

Isn’t their version of the protection fighting style just silvery barbs for melee classes?

Max Moran

I am literally crying with laughter at the Utz potato chips bit

Tyrat

Brennan loves Battle Maneuvers so much, he gave wizards some! That subclass sounds super interesting

Micah D Lord

Nah because protection only works with weapon attack rolls, whereas silvery barbs can replace saving throws, ability checks and attack rolls.

505Dude

See now I need the Wizard of the Citadel subclass

Peter Burke

Brennan moving mountains and seas to get Lou over 20hp

2026-09-08 21:00 Brennan. Banning silvery barbs? Come on man. We already know you can handle it.
2023-10-25 12:34

David

Let the people have Silvery Barbs!!!

Barbie Pootsky

The disadvantage on Protection fighting style is important because it can negate nat 20s!

Antonio N

my favorite chip in the world UTZ CHIP

Carrie Mook Bridgman

Suvi sent Ghost to the Chantry, right? With a message using her name and influence to tell them to send Ghost to the Citadel? I think she had mentioned to Ghost that there was a famous artificer there--and then in Ep 15 Grandma Wren|mentioned that person to Ame as an ally. Right?

James Genovese

As an irl witch, I LOVE how careful and precise you guys have been with the witch class- it feels so true to the heart of what witchcraft is for me (connections between things, protecting found family, honoring Spirit, powerful intentions, and vengeance for wrongs…) Y’all are lowkey helping me foster a better relationship between my spirituality and my sense of play through this game ❤️❤️❤️

Elselynn Leighton

I WAS COMING HERE TO SAY THIS great minds my friend

TheWizardSloth

Same. I love the Expertise and magic manuevers.

Sil

Ooof, yes! I am absolutely feeling this for myself as well

Sil

Brennan be getting slow-burnt revenge for Aabria's Ravening War Silvery Barbs 😂

Sil

I feel the need to reach across the ditch and hold your hand in this land that is full of Northern Hemisphere dwellers 🫱🏻‍🫲🏽 I am irrationally excited to find someone so close to home in my corners of the internet 😅

Endeavor RPG

Do you guys have posted the Wizard Of The Citadel subclass anywhere? Or is that perhaps coming down the pipe?

Neal

Brennan (or whoever designed the wizard of the citadel subclass), THANK YOU for Secret of Contingency. I think 5e's Contingency spell is so sad in its limitations compared to what it used to be in earlier editions! "I've already woven a spell for this exact moment" is such a wizardly thing! Hell yeah. And hell yeah to Aabria for taking it among what sounds like a lot of options!!

Jillian McCann

I absolutely love the witch class but I was wondering if you guys are planning on expanding the coven options. I’ve been thinking about homebrewing a coven of the stars that is more divination focused. Any suggestions?

Apple Slapple

They made sorceror a wizard subclass where their "sorcery points" refresh on short rest as well as other features? Kinda busted but kinda hype.

RuviGaPo

Been mia for like two months but catching up!! I love it here!! Also Yes, wizards Should have expertice. I mean.. there are so many levels when they get Nothing. You can fit a lil arcana expertise in there tbh

Andrew Hicks

Has the Wizard of the Citadel subclass been released yet?

Danny Mendoza

Hey, y'all - has the Wizard of the Citadel subclass been released yet? If so, I'm having trouble finding it.

Beau R.

The way the citadel wizard subclass is described makes it sound like Joseph Joestar fro Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Always setting up complex hyper specific plans. Very interesting and fun.

Blaize Gordon

It's so funny if you remember how ally fucked Brennan's shit up in a crown of candy with detect poisons 🤣😂🤣

Lisa Schröpfer

oh my gosh Suvy in Arch 2 makes so much more sense now ✨ only listening to the fire side now and the character building is fantastic

SmilingKelly

One of my new favorite things is reading the description of a fireside chat before listening, so I can wonder/guess what kind of bit inspired the randomness in the description. The Utz bit did not disappoint

Luccan

I love that everyone is getting in on the homebrew for this game. I don't think every class needs Athletics on the grounds that 1. Most Rogues *don't* have Arcana proficiency 2. Expertise in Arcana is paying an opportunity cost already 3. Expertise breaks the math of the game and should be doled out sparingly 3b. If you're just doing it so Wizards normally pass Arcana checks just let a Wizard with Proficiency in Arcana know more stuff without rolling.* *This is an example, apply across Barbarian with Athletics, Clerics with Religion, etc. One class I agree needs Expertise is Ranger. At least in favored terrain every Ranger should have Expertise in Survival.
