Love that the 'villains' are most often people trying to bring back 'the old world'. It's how Negan described the Saviors and Sanctuary "an economy" is what he called it. People were not treated fairly at all but the funny thing is is that Negan would always have even his 'workers' who were treated the most unfairly get medical attention from an actual doctor. He actually put Simon on a mission to steal Hilltop's doctor so the Sanctuary still had one. Negan was a bad man when controlling the Saviors (absolute power blah blah) but there were always moments of humanity and making sure people were safe (especially since Rick's group murdered many of his people in their sleep, which any leader would do something about). Not saying I think he was completely justified, not at all, and he kept people under his boot, but by and large, no one seemed to be starving at the Sanctuary, and the people living there loved and trusted Negan. Gabriel actually sees it firsthand. So the 'villains' are different but similar. Negan actually had more people in his inner circle than I think Pamela does, so it's no wonder her and Hornsby have such power in their community. Killing Negan (at THAT time) would have just martyred him and then Saviors fight (what happened effectively in season 9). It's so interesting comparing. Especially since Negan is a dick to your face while Pam and Lance are all about putting on nice happy faces, as politicians often do. They're only slightly better at that act than Gregory was xD

His intentions behind caring for them weren't pure though. He needed them to provide for him. He needed them strong. I don't think his people loved him haha, they kneeled to him out of fear and tried to escape but got brought back. They lived under fear so they showed him respect to avoid his fury. The only ones who would love him are the type like Simon or Arat who were given opportunities to get away with evil acts.

I don't disagree but I think the growth that Negan has shown is leading me to believe that he's not 'evil'. I know his intentions weren't pure but his people still saw him fight for them and the people that were killed. As they said, the Saviors provided muscle and safety to the people there. They looked to them for safety so there's definitely positive feelings there. Negan's growth as a character would not be possible if those moments weren't meant to show he's typically wearing a mask of intimidation. He also just likes to piss people off and I'll be the first to admit he's an asshole. And more. It's just the acting as well as the writing, in my opinion, shows Negan's capacity (need) for human connection and teaching even. I just feel like the show itself paints a different picture than 'Negan only needed people for resources' and that his people were only ever afraid of him. I get it though, and there are different ways to read it so I don't necessarily think you're wrong at all. I just think it would make Negan and by extension, his story, way less interesting and dynamic.

The troopers were sent to deal with a horde. Suddenly the horde is at Hilltop, but it's ok the troopers are there too to save the day... Like Lance said, he thought his coin was gold but it was just gold plated. Inside it was just an old nickle. Maggie doesn't trust them. She sees the sales pitches, the displays of heroism, the gifts of food. They're TRYING so hard to convince them this is something good. They're putting on a show to get more people, but the reasons why aren't completely clear yet. Why do they want alexandria specifically? Hilltop? Just for the nice beach? What will he ask for in return? What happens if they refuse? Does he cut them off? Get them hooked in a state where they have to rely on the commonwealth resources then they ask for something in return and they can't do it either literally or morally. Then they get cut off? All CW provisions and help taken back? Do they kill someone who tries to stop them? There's too much unknown surrounding it and maggies lost so many communities already i think she doesn't want to take the risk. She'd rather try and fail on their own rather than rely on the CW and get backstabbed just to lose it all against an unbeatable army. What Maggie did for other communities wasn't quite the same. Not every community she helped died. What she did was find struggling communities and teach them to be self sufficient. They didn't ally, or make deals. She taught them how to help themselves and them moved on to the next group. It was just meridian where she decided to settle with them before it was taken by the reapers.

Eh he was definitely evil imo. He enslaved thousands, burned their faces off with a smile, took people's daughters to be his gfs. Remember Amber? She was what? 19? And this 40 year old man is using her in his harem of sex slaves? She's drinking herself to death, but she's doing it for her mums medicine. She's caught speaking to her bf and negan burns his face off for it. She's a terrified young girl trapped in a system that Negan set up where she has to sleep with him... And then the laughter while killing people. Enjoying seeing people suffer and cry and beg. Then he shows off all his victims, his sex slaves, his slaves, his torture methods to Carl when he was only 14. And gets off on mocking his eye. He was the most evil person we'd met at that point. He didn't have the excuse of insanity, he was sane. He just hurt people because he enjoyed it and it got him nice supplies. I actually think Negans mask if what we see now. In his backstory episode we see how he had all his evil tendencies. He wanted multiple wives so he cheated on Lucille, he wanted to beat a man to death for being loud in a bar, he wanted to live on his ass and profit off Lucilles hard work. But he couldn't get away with it. He had consequences. Once the apocalypse started and Lucille died he was free to take the mask off and do the things he wanted so he did them. He got multiple wives, he profited off others labour, he killed people for fun. And then Rick introduced consequence again, so he stopped because he couldn't get away with it anymore.

If you just shoot once, the barrel won’t be hot. Shooting a lot, on the other hand, it’s gonna heat up like crazy

I do like the symbolism of Hornsby saying the coin he thought was gold was basically the equivalent of a nickel. He sees the shiny potential in these other smaller communities, and Pamela is quoting their worth at face value. But he’s still holding tight to the nickel.

Chris Moffit

Agree to disagree on some points. He did do all those things yes, but there isn't anything stopping him from doing it now. Really nothing. He could just continue killing people if he really wanted to. He could put people under his boot, but he hasn't. I'm not gonna keep coming back to comment but hate the writers if you want, it's the way they wrote him xD. I would also have loved to see him have been confronted by his 'wives' but most of them end up dead (which, to your point, most of that is up to Negan for what he put them through). So, no, I'm not saying he's evil because people aren't evil, especially in TWD, a lot of characters get arcs, Negan got a pretty damn good one, in my opinion. He's very much like Walter White to me (who also manipulates, gaslights, rapes his younger wife, is a horrible father) but is an interesting character regardless. And I do hate Walter but that's primarily because he's the main character and we see in detail the bad things he does and how it effects those around him. But he wasn't evil. Again, I don't believe in evil. And neither does this show.

I feel like Rick keeping Negan alive only created more problems for him and it caused issues within his own circle which almost led to his demise. The whole “We are still Negan” thing in S9 and the killing of the saviors could’ve been avoided. Negan simply doesn’t have the resources to be who he was before. He went out on his own and realized there was nothing for him. I think Rick’s group definitely showed him a new way and he fell into that because he had no other choice, not because he wanted to. If Negan had power again I can definitely see him slipping right back into who he really is, the only difference would be that he does now care for some of the people we care about, which still doesn’t make him a good person

Chris Moffit

Oh yeah, I never thought he was a good person and I get what you mean. I just think thematically (and wanting to keep Carl's vision alive) Rick not killing him makes sense. It might have been a 'mistake' not to but the Saviors aren't actually killing anyone during this time. They aren't super pleasant but that's kinda justified when they're being picked off while providing a lot of labor for Rick's project. We also see a lot of Saviors that didn't want Negan around and thank Rick for ending it. The same thing could've happened if he killed Negan but I wouldn't have been nearly as interesting. At the end of the day, it makes perfect sense to me why Rick doesn't kill him. And Negan dying there would not have been interesting in the slightest. And I love media that's 'interesting' in that way. I get what you mean though and I don't think you're wrong. I just don't think Rick killing Negan there would've solved everything and definitely still would've caused problems if he had.
