How have your thoughts on Gollum/Smeagul changed after finishing the trilogy? What thoughts do you have on the Ring's bending of others to it's will ultimately being what led to its destruction? (Frodo and Gollum fighting for control)

The movies may say that Frodo was the hero of these movies for all the hardships and trials he had to get through, especially with the ring. However, many fans believe Sam was the true hero of these movies. What is your take??

Did you guys think that the trilogy was too long or did you like pace and the pay offs at the end? After seeing this and knowing that Tolkien wrote the whole thing in the 1940s, do you see the influence on the whole genre, specially on things like Harry Potter, GoT etc.?
