Here's our UNCUT reaction to ANDOR s01e10!

One reason I find this show so interesting and satisfying is that it’s presented in shades of gray. In other Star Wars shows and movies, it’s black and white. There’s the dark side of the force and the light. It’s presented as a simple delineation between good and evil. They even present the Emperor as a cackling evil wizard who shoots lightning bolts from his fingertips. This show presents at least some of the servants of the Empire as genuinely believing they’re doing the right thing. We’re supposed to root against characters like Syril and Dedra because they’re on the side of the Empire, but they firmly believe that they are in the right, that they’re preserving law and order and defending those ideals against lawlessness. On the other hand, we’re supposed to root for characters like Luthen and Cassian because they’re on the side of the Rebellion and trying to overthrow an oppressive government, but Luthen manipulates and uses people, and as we see in this episode, will let 50 people die to protect his spy inside the ISB, and won’t allow that spy to step away to enjoy a normal family life. And as much as we’re supposed to root for Cassian, one of his first acts in this show was to murder a security guard rather than allow a witness to remain alive. I’m really enjoying your outro discussions.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this. That was exactly what stood out to us too—Andor does such a great job of showing how people can sincerely believe they’re doing the right thing, even when they’re serving something deeply corrupt. It makes the moral questions much more challenging and, honestly, more human. We’re really glad you’ve been enjoying the outro discussions—they’ve become one of our favorite parts to film!

Great discussion! Yes, Luthen is Axis. Isn't it crazy. He's smily and sorta frail looking back at his shop. But in this episode he was frightening. Doesn't even seem like the same dude.

"I TOLD YOU GUYS THIS SHOW WAS GOOD" Phil, I almost spat out my water lmao. Great reaction, great discussion. Luthen is absolutely morally questionable but goddamn is he one of the best written characters in the SW universe.

Very much enjoyed your discussion on the morality and ethics of the rebellion. FWIW, this is one corner of armed resistance, there are many other groups, some that are (or will become) very important (in the broader Star Wars Universe), but each group has their own ways of doing things. The Senator, Mon Mothma, is not completely up to speed with what Luthen is doing fully and he definitely does that on purpose, but I do think she is very much the person you are thinking of in terms of questioning methods and advocating more ethical resistance. Without spoiling anything specific, I do think a lot of the things you are discussing are very much part of season 2 . What does it take to resist the empire? Who should lead that and how?
