How to Read and Why (2000) by Harold Bloomwith A Field (@ponyfaceddog)This episode of Bistro Californium concerns Harold Bloom's work of popular literary scholarship How to Read and Why (2000). Divided into different sections on exemplary short stories, poems, plays and novels, the book is at once an introduction to the pleasures of literature, a meditation on the act of reading itself, and and an imaginative labyrinth.I'm joined on this episode by Bistro newcomer A Field to discuss Bloom's love of literature, of human personalities, and of Oscar Wilde's 'lovely world of cucumber sandwiches', as we discover in this book a map, not only of (mis)reading, but of our own mutual enthusiasm and affection for this legendary literary critic."I know more than Apollo,For oft when he lies sleepingI see the stars at bloody warsIn the wounded welkin weeping"

Theres a great book about contemporary music called Neon Screams that Simon Reynolds did the foreward for. The comments about what that Simon Reynolds book mentioned makes me curious to revisit the Foreward that I previously just skimmed as Neon Screams got me excited about alot of music I couldn't previously stand.

Thank you both for that. Knowing this episode was coming up I started to reread The WC again. I shall continue enthusiastically if slowly.

Reynolds is a great music writer and one or another of his books will probably appear as a topic sooner or later
