Trompe le Monde (1991) and Wave of Mutilation: The Best of Pixies (2004) by PixiesUn Chien Andalou (1929) by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Daliwith NeedsSalt (@StilNotHavin_It)This episode of Bistro Californium concerns the world's greatest surrealist college rock band and the world's most infamous surrealist movie. Wonderful returning guest NeedsSalt joins me in appreciating the Pixies' 1991 masterpiece of what critic Tom Ewing described as "clean-lined sci-fi pop metal", with its songs about sea monkeys, bird dreams and martian honeys. We also compare Frank Black's talent for writing "inspired gibberish" to the cinematic and narrative techniques developed by Dali and Buñuel, and meditate on a mysterious sequence of images: a cloud across the moon, a razor through an eye, a hand covered in ants.
