This has to be one of the greatest beatdowns of all of anime. Another reason why it's so important to watch Bleach LMFAO

For what it's worth, even though the Gentei Kaijo kind of feels like a random powerup comes out of nowhere, it's actually a concept we've already had explained to us, although we didn't know what it was called. If you remember the rematch between Ichigo and Renji in the Soul Society arc, Renji gives a little infodump about how soul reapers of Lieutenant-class and above have 80% of their powers sealed when they go to the world of the living to prevent their spiritual pressure from disrupting the balance of souls, and so now that they're fighting in Soul Society he's 5x as strong as the last time they fought (and of course, Ichigo still kicks his ass, but that's to be expected). I'm also not sure if it's ever fully explained how it works, but I think the "area freeze" that Yumichika requested during Ikkaku's fight has to do with the same concept, being some way of "freezing" the state of ordinary human souls in a given area to prevent them from being affected by powerful spiritual pressure. Honestly, the fact that he'd already had the situational awareness to request that might even have been a factor in how quickly Rangiku's Gentei Kaijo request got approved.

Hmmm this totally makes sense and I do remember that info dump. Now I'm wondering why would a request like that ever be denied? That would just mean our soul reaper would die cuz they weren't able to use their full potential
