I absolutely love this trope! Speaking as a very shy bookworm, anime nerd, I can speak to not thinking it was possible that popular people/jocks would want to talk to me... I can definitely relate to that myself as a former shy book worm. I still find myself becoming cripplingly shy around the ones I have a crush on, but I've gotten so much better about putting myself out there. But it's pretty easy to dig into that old place and pull out that shyness when needed. 🤣🤣
