KNEELING TO THE LORD OF SHADOW

The Realms is a big world, and its lore is deep and rich in places, and little more than a threadbare cloak in others—but I have been working on it for sixty years, now, and for the last thirty-seven of them, so have a lot of other people, some of them very talented creators.

Our job will never be finished.

If the Realms is to feel alive in our minds, it must always be changing, its lore always expanding. One of the best ways to do this isn’t sitting down to create whatever seems cool to us, right now, it’s to answer your lore questions—the things you need to know about, to run your Realms campaign, or craft your own stories and lore of the Realms.

So here is an “answer” video. And this time around, we’re answering these queries:

It’s been stated in Realmslore that that there are non-drow followers of Vhaeraun. How and why do non-drow follow him if one of Vhaeraun’s teachings is “drow supremacy” (how they are okay with that?)?  And an obvious question that follows: can non-drow become priests of Vhaeraun?

So, here are the quick answers: there are non-drow who believe that the world as it is right now (their local experiences of it, at least) is so bad or inferior that it will likely.........

Thank you so much for this video! It helps a tonne as I am running a modified Forgotten Realms where Araushnee was slain by Corellon after her attempted treachery, and Vhaeraun is the primary deity for the drow and still wants to enact The Night Above. There is an issue in the script, both docx and txt version, when you discuss Vhaeraun caring about the health, safety, and welfare of his non-drow followers. When the senior priest asks of Vhaeraun why he does so, both script versions cut off at a typo "...when one of his senior drocz Yet the question has been asked..."

That’s the old term for subservient…. An ode to a Marvel character…. The following of the half faced godhead could sacrifice everything, even their drow-ness, so the term was first inclusive of likes of driders who lost their race, then of non drow who were “woke” to the Night Within. I had an ancient ogre maybe named Borked, who even learned revelry before Lloth drow, by following the deceit

Hi, I'd like to say thank you for the amazing videos. I watch each one. There is much use in answering what those who are deeply invested in the Realms want out of your time, but, I would like to cast my words out and say that there is equally as much use in driving videos forward by which your team are personally inspired to create. If there was ever a question of if I'd personally want more on the most common lore topics or what you would actually like to cover, I would choose the latter every time.

👈 (Ivan) Thanks for this input! I've made sure to relay this message to Ed. Just for some fun little insight: this is actually a discussion we have pretty regularly. I'm personally committed to Ed having the opportunity to do the Realms work that matters most to him and on his terms. Ed is also immensely gratified by being able to make things for people that are helpful to them and practical to their games, but I often discover that he's gotten into a cycle of only ever answering external questions, so we tend to take those times to reassess. I always try to frame it in the way that we *could* answer one person's question, or we could find a topic that he's super excited to write about that might help serve 5,000 people at once instead of just 2-3 people on Twitter or something. Typically I give him a list of 20-30 topics based on market research, questions asked by our patrons and discord community members, and/or recent popular videos within the niche. He has full veto rights on all topics and we usually end up losing about 50% or more of them in lieu of topics that he has been itching to write. Then we take that new list and record them. What's even more interesting is sometimes I'll say "folks are looking for something in XYZ topic" but often he's not wholly interested in the initial idea, so he finds a way to write something within the same scope of the topic but rearranged into something that he thinks is more valuable. A good example of this are our videos on deities. Ed isn't very much interested in just giving stat blocks for gods or telling you the same stuff that you can read in any source book that's available out there, so instead he decides to write about the everyday practices of the temples and clergy dedicated to that deity because he thinks it has a much more practical and interesting use that players and readers are much more likely to interact with. I've always loved his perspective on that kind of stuff. Anyway, this is way longer than intended. I was just inspired to respond to this because you and I seem to share the same ideals about wanting Ed to write for Ed while also being able to continue being successful in the digital space. I really hope that this helps explain part of our process and puts your mind at ease that Ed is happy to be working on the Realms, both for himself and for you all. ❤️

As the one who asked that question (about non-drow worshippers and why) and being fan of Vhaeraun, I am extremely happy that this lore now has a whole video. English is not my language so I was always cringing at how my question was worded, but thank you Ivan and Ed!

Interesting find for me! :) I've been working on a long fanfic (available on Ao3 under my nickname ShadowedScribe) set in Menzoberranzan 1319DR and the protagonist is an unnamed rogue whose father was a wizard that escaped Eryndlyn on 995DR. One of the main reasons he left is because his house, Yauntyrr, was fully worshipping Lolth but --and thanks to the information in The War of the Spider Queen- as the alliances started changing in the city, he was almost sacrificed as a heretic for being a secret Vhaeraun supporter. So naturally, I've collected all I've been able to find about the deities all from book, to guides and adventures down to the most minor details and I was surprised to find this video now! I didn't know people were interested! :)

Always happy with more info regarding the drow. Thankfully I own plenty of past editions filled with amazing info regarding elves, dwarves, halflings etc. Such a shame with the current edition's lack of focus regarding these races, their religion, customs etc. More of this please in the future Ed!
