I think the thing with Rick is he is now almost that person Shane was. He will do anything to protect his family (the people in his group) and sees all outsiders as threats. They have experienced such horrible things from people that now they are a bigger threat than the dead. Beth, well she saw that Dawn was the real problem. When Dawn whispered I knew you would be back, I think it sent Beth over the edge and she knew Dawn had to go for the sake of everyone that lived at the hospital.
