Thing that surprised me when I was learning about it was just how much of it is gone. I was so confused why the Mexican army gave two craps about a mission out in its northernmost reaches, but once I saw a map and saw that the mission was a small part, it made sense.

It didn’t mention in the video but the Alamo siege was a month before the final battle of the revolution. At the Battle of San Jacinto, Santa Ana’s forces were defeated in 18 minutes. By this time, Sam Houston was suffering from a wound, so there is an iconic image of Santa Ana surrendering to a laying down Sam Houston, resting under the shade of a tree. Weird tidbit is neither Santa Ana nor Houston, who became the first President of Texas, permitted the bodies of the Mexican soldiers to be buried for whatever reason so the bodies lied there for days or even years in some cases. And yes, Sam was President of Texas. Not Governor. Texas was a Republic before it became a member of the US. That is why Texas is the only US State permitted under flag code to fly their flag at the same size and height as the US flag.

I'm thinking we need to watch a good documentary about this

The famous folks who died that day were Colonel William Travis, Jim Bowie (Bowie Knife fame) and Davy Crockett. Fun fact: I’m Scottish on my dad’s side but I’m English on my mom’s side and a direct descendant of Colonel William Travis.

Thanks ! Definitely has me about to go down that rabbit hole!

Actually, the weakest point of the Alamo defenses was the palisade on the south, which was a fence-like structure constructed of trenches and upright timbers, built by the Mexicans originally to fill a gap in the fort's walls. The palisade was originally constructed to protect against attacks by indigenous peoples, not artillery.
