Re the Calypso song: the lines she’s using are *textbook* in abusive relationships tbh. Non-apologies, pseudo-apologies, shutting him down when he tries to speak, “sorry my love’s too much for you,” positioning herself as a victim with regards to Odysseus (almost DARVO style). This is *classic* emotional abuse tactics—though of course it’s not so calculated as “tactics” makes it sound, it’s a subconscious act of insecurity/need/woundedness/possessiveness/entitlement. And sure, she’s hurting and lacks mortal perspective and doesn’t understand how her behavior is harmful and coercive. I think the songs do a good job of showing that, I think they’re brilliant depictions of a dysfunctional abusive relationship. And the accuracy of it is *why* fans are so divided—it’s *both/and*, she’s a victim *and* an abuser, she’s sympathetic *and* causing harm, she can be pitied *and* held responsible for her actions/impact. I suspect a lot of people see one side or the other, or take one side or the other, and struggle to hold both at once. I personally find the calypso arc to be really well done, beautifully written, musically excellent…. And I can’t listen to the songs casually, I avoid listening to them when possible, because ye gods do they hit way too close to home with some rough personal experiences.
