She was living with Hopper the sheriff, what happened to him? And what did they do about her mother? Wasn't she living in some type of facility because she knew her daughter was still alive, and it drove her crazy? Did anyone bother to try to tell her that her daughter is still alive?

Maybe the beginning is a flashback to before Hopper took her in? It's confusing.

Not good for El to sit there alone all day watching TV. She needs an education and interaction with other people, particularly children.

Before Hopper took her in, she was evidently living a feral life out in the woods.

When El killed off the original monster, she was evidently drawn into the upside down, then managed to find her way out and re-entered our world into the school. She then lived in the woods surviving however she could until Hopper somehow found her and took her in.

Compared to killing a monster with your mind or turning over cars, changing channels is easy peasy.
