Rip literally stated at the end that they are family to him. He stepped down and took the beating because Casey needs to lead. He will do anything that John requires and is the only one besides Beth whom he can trust 100% to do what is best for him. Just because Beth and Rip are tough and don't care what others think doesn't mean they aren't loyal and love fiercely. Rip is more of a son to John then either Casey or Jamie. Both will do what they want and what serves their purpose. They also can be led around by the nose by the women in their lives.

my dad is just like mr. dutton. he'll go to the dr. but he really doesn't want anyone to know about it. he was born in 1948. i guess he doesn't want the attention because people might see him as weak.
