Herschel is starting to see things from Rick's point of view and Rick is starting to realise you have to take action in ways you may not have in the past to survive. To survive in this world you have to trust your instincts and react to the situation you are in and not rely on past experience. Rick is learning but he isn't like Shane. Shane is one step from the point of no return. Dale is the conscience of the group. He is almost the total opposite of a Shane. He understands the danger they are in but tempers that with compassion which ultimately would be his doom if he wasn't with someone like Rick. Maggie is such a strong woman. She sees Glen for who he is and who he can be and loves him. Glen, with Maggie's help, is starting to realise maybe he is more than walker bait. Laurie is nothing but a weight around Rick's neck. She is the primary reason Shane is the way he is. If you remember at the beginning, she wasn't even sure she loved Rick and wanted to be with him. Daryl is feeling defeated. He feels like everything he did was for nothing and he has let Carol down. Carol is facing reality much quicker than the others. She realised Sophia was probably dead before they found her in the barn. She is toughening up. Andrea is just a pain in the arse. 😁

And was Carl's response cold or realistic? He needs to see the walkers as just that, the dead and dangerous. It would be nice if he could remain innocent and childlike but he doesn't have that option in this world.
