It wasn't exactly mid morning. Rick was up at 6am so it would have been only about 7 or so. They don't have any guards posted inside but posted outside. They may have been lulled into a sense of false security after 6 months of no trouble. The people are in separate cell blocks hence why they didn't know until people in Block D woke up. Also, Block D had a lot of the people on fence patrol so they would have been exhausted. It always gets me in the gut when you see strong characters break down like Michonne, Darryl, Rick.
