I flip flop a lot on this film. The Shining was always my favorite Stephen King novel and they changed way too much from it in the movie. As such I think it's a terrible adaptation. As a stand alone film, forget that it's based on a novel, and I think it's an effectively scary film. Another good "possessed" house film is Burnt Offerings (1976). I highly recommend it.
