Not every film (or genre) is going to work for every person and that’s totally cool. Was this a “good story?” Well, depends on what you mean. It certainly wasn’t a pleasant story, but it was a well-told story. It did what the genre required of it. It wasn’t an excellent story, though. Still, for the time, the effects were good and it hit all the right beats for sci-fi horror (what used to be part of “speculative fiction”) and it did well. Most horror films have that “last guy saves the day” thing. You get a positive little boost of hope at the end. It’s hard to get that with this one. One of the main protagonists IS the antagonist, so when he’s beaten, the protagonists lose. But if he wins, the protagonists lose. It ends up Being a story of hubris, jealousy, and the shadow self, which is the real villain in the film. Every bad thing that happens, happens because someone gives in to one of their darker human emotions. It gets mentioned that insects don’t have politics and are brutal, but the entire plot is initiated and driven by self-absorbed human decisions.
