Dear Patrons,

In formatting the Latin-English vocabulary list at the end of the chapters of CAMILLVS, an interesting question has arisen: how should the vocabulary be ordered? Alphabetical is always an option (the usual one). FAMILIA ROMANA does something different: it lists the vocabulary words in order of their appearance in the chapter, and also by part of speech. I remember really liking this when I used FAMILIA ROMANA for the first time 20 years ago, but perhaps this has drawbacks I'm not aware of, and this can be improved upon.

I have imitated this in the current version of the vocabulary lists, seen in the attached photo. I wonder though, is either of these characteristcs especially useful? the two characteristics being:

1) in order of appearance

2) grouped into parts of speech

Feel free to comment on this question as future chapters are released. If you change your opinion as time goes on, that will be useful to know as well.

Thank you!

I prefer in order of appearance, but either will be useful.

Salve! I currently think 1) By order of appearance 2) Not categorized by part of speech (but part of speech indicated for each) 3) Optionally: Alphabetical recap at end of book.

I like grouped into parts of speech. I don’t think I have a preference on alphabetical vs. order of appearance.

Luke Amadeus Ranieri

Thanks for the feedback! The end of the book will definitely have an alphabetical index/glossary.

I do like it grouped in the order of appearance. I immediately sent the link to the wonderful Camillus youtube video to a local friend who is also working her way through Familia Romana and is farther along than me (I actually got distracted with trying to learn Hebrew and Greek all at the same time), she was quite delighted, as was I! I had an African Grey parrot who passed away and I miss him SO much so I very much love birds.

Luke Amadeus Ranieri

I’m sure that was a wonderful parrot! I also love birds. Thanks so much for the feedback, and for sharing Camillus.

I think the order of appearance in Familia Romana helps me recall the content of the chapter as I examine the vocabulary list. The list in this form enables a way to more easily form firmer connections in my mind. It reminds me of connecting actor names to smaller roles in order of appearance end credits in a movie. So much easier to do with that style of end credits.

Order of appearance is very useful

Excellent work Mr Ranieri, it is so helpful to be able to hear the Latin pronounced, after all , that's how we first acquire language. I am especially grateful for the way CAMMILLVS complements LLpsi but with different nouns, verbs and adjectives. I shall certainly be buying the book when you publish.

Mikael Fortelius

I chime in. Order of appearance is easiest once you get used to it. I first did so in a rare and entirely unofficial translation of most Tintin albums into latin that I got from one of those responsible, and later in Familia Romana.

I like how you've done it, both in order of appearance and separating the parts of speech.

I'm partial to them being grouped by parts of speech. As for alphabetical vs. order of appearance, the latter, I'd say, is better after reading the chapter, while the former would be preferable when revisiting vocabulary later down the line.

Luke Amadeus Ranieri

Excellent. Yes, the end of the book will have a full glossary and index in alphabetical order.

Mikael Fortelius

They seem quite determined not to and I solemnly swore not to share anything anywhere. Would you have an interest? I could ask.

Jaron Peck

I am partial to alphabetical, but I think if you have something at the end like in famila Romana, then I can get behind order of appearance with in the chapters. I can see that being useful. I also like how you have it broken up by parts of speech.

Mikael Fortelius

OK I’ll sound them out. Don’t hold your breath!

I'm not sure about grouping by part of speech. But I do like having vocab lists in order of first use for each chapter. (Obviously a full list for the whole book would need to be alphabetical.)

As others have said, if there is an alphabetical master-list at the back, then the Familia Rōmāna parts of speech + order of appearance would work nicely. The only way I can think of to improve it - having seen it used in FR, L’Italiano secondo il metodo natura, Le Français par la méthode nature and Deutsch nach der Naturmethode - might be to add the line number of the first appearance next to it.

I like order of appearance. My favorite Latin primer, The Cambridge Latin Course, has new vocab in the order it appears at the end of each reading. Them at the end of chapter, the words appear alphabetically.
