You're Re-Reading Wrong | Pyramid Re-Reading Solves Literate Fluency in Foreign Languages

Sign up for Lingopie at this link to immerse yourself in foreign language content made comprehensible from beginners to advanced learners (plus they have Modern Greek now!): https://learn.lingopie.com/luke_polymathy When using a graded reader to learn a language, it feels like you can just go on to the next chapter without re-reading the previous one. But let me disabuse you of that notion: you absolutely have to read the previous chapters, many times in fact, before going on. How many times? Why does this work so well? The timing of this video couldn't be better. I just got my copy of Ōseald Bera and after following Colin Gorrie's instructions I applied the Scriptorium Method and I just finished transcribing chapter 1 yesterday. Before moving on to chapter 2 I'll reread chapter 1 and do the pyramid from now on. Thanks, Luke!

That’s terrific! We can say that books like Ōsweald Bear ‘have all the answers’, in that we merely need to download them hair contents into our brains somehow. A mix of techniques like Scriptorium and others is very effective. Good luck!

Great video. Also, I love the shirt! You should do more videos in that shirt.

I do worry that the "compelling" part of the equation will quickly be lost, although you address in the video ways that we might promote deeper processing and engagement of earlier material. When we become dreadfully bored that 28th read of chapter 1, I wonder how diminished our returns will be.

I'm sorry but the Ebbinghaus experiment is quite strange to me. Why should our brain safe nonsense words. It's made for context, connections and sense. If you wouldn't forget useless info you would overload your brain. That's why you don't remember what you ate two weeks ago. That doesn't mean that the pyramid method is false it still sounds quite interesting and useful to me, because repetition is key for embracing a language or any skill really. Thanks for this input.

Luke Amadeus Ranieri

Right! I thought about that too. The reason was to have a control: if they’re words you know, you’re able to associate them with something. Then there would be no objective way to measure retention or lack of recall. But at least with this analysis, we have a starting point to develop broader hypotheses and theories about memory retention, and forgetting.

Luke Amadeus Ranieri

That’s a very good point, Ryan! I think by the 20th time that you read chapter 1 or chapter 2, you’ll probably be reading it pretty quickly, practically skimming, but I still think this promotes a good habit, and did encourage his one to read fluently; that is one gets the very valuable, and I would say, underrated experience of reading the target language quickly, so as not to get into a long-term habit of reading very slow slowly and meticulously every time.

Luke Amadeus Ranieri

I think this was actually one of the most important parts of the Ranieri Roberts approach for me, because there were many aspects of those books that I found unbelievably tedious, but whenever that occurred, since I had so much stuff to read that was on the same level, I would usually skim those chapters. But that did, but it gave me more confidence that I could read a large amount of text without a detailed understanding, but still understand a lot enough to be sure to be able to move on; this ended up, forming a very good habit of being able to read something as difficult as the written ancient Greek language with a lot of of speed.

Salvē Luke! Do you ever think about reviewing the poetic latin used in modern "bardcore" song covers, such as the ones by the_miracle_aligner on youtube? I'd be interested to know how the lyrics sound to you, as someone who reads a lot of the classical poetry!
