The beginner textbook Athenaze is most famous from it's semi-Ørbergized Italian incarnation, but the original UK version (available on Amazon at this link) confers many benefits on the student, especially when used in conjunction with the version from Italy.

I use the Lucian Pronunciation of Ancient Greek, which you can learn about in this video, or by reading this Ancient Greek Pronunciation Guide I wrote, which also compares the various pronunciation systems.

Enjoy! 👨‍🌾 🏛

Hello Luke, Thank you for all of the hard work that you have done and continue to do. You say that using the UK edition of Athenaze in conjunction with the Italian version confers a lot of benefits for the Ancient Greek student. What precisely are those benefits? I own the Italian set but now feel as if I’m missing out on something very important.

I would be delighted to elaborate! (And no need to miss out; you can find the PDF in the resources on my Discord channel.) If one does not speak Italian, then the Italian Athenaze isn't a great book: though it has lots of pictures, it assumes you can instantly recognise Italian glosses, and understand all the grammatical explanations and historical context summaries. If you use the UK version first for every chapter including the grammatical explanations, and then enjoy the longer Greek text passages in the Italy version, it'll be a great tool to understand and also engage in a form of rereading, which is essential to extensive reading and reading fluency. The UK version has much shorter narratives, and the Italy version has fewer glosses and more explained via illustrations or marginal notes. But it's not at all per se illustrata like Familia Romana. The shorter narratives in the UK version are somewhat of an advantage: you get a more digestible story, plus full grammatical and historical context, and then you go read the "same" thing but more elaborated in the Italy version. I like this system a great deal, and recommend it for my students.

Thank you for answering my question so promptly! 😃Do you recommend that I work through both Books 1 and 2 of the UK edition, or can I get away with only working through the first book and then going back to the Italian version? I tried to keep my comment contained to our conversation thread but can’t seem to get it to work. Edit: Added a missing “but.”

Luke Amadeus Ranieri

Ah it’s cool; Patreon is a great but imperfect website/app. Definitely! That’s exactly how I do it with my students.

By chance I picked up a copy of Athenaze as my main intro to Greek text, and am delighted to see that you have this audio series! This is incredibly useful, especially for someone self learning ancient languages. Thank you for everything you do, and I am looking forward to the next Greek through Latin lesson with your friend Pernox. Thanks again! -Brandon

Thanks so much! Yes much more of Athenaze to come, and Pernox and I will be doing the next livestream on Sunday!

There is a discord channel? Where? How could I miss this out?

As I'm re-listening to these chapters, I've been writing questions in Greek to accompany the stories. Do you mind if I post them here as a comment under each chapter? Here are my questions for the first story: ὁ Δικαιόπολις Α 1. ᾶρα Αθηναῖός εστιν ὁ Δικαιόπολις; 2. ποῦ οικεῖ ὁ Δικαιόπολις; 3. ποῦ πονεῖ ὁ Δικαιόπολις; 4. ποῖός εστιν ὁ βίος τοῦ Δικαιοπόλεως; 5. ποῖός εστιν ὁ κλῆρος αυτοῦ; 6. ποῖός εστιν ὁ Δικαιόπολις; 7. τί φιλεῖ ὁ Δικαιόπολις; 8. πόσον σῖτον παρέχει ὁ κλῆρος;

Alright here goes nothing. I'm a beginner so please don't use this as an answer key Ναί Αθηναῖός εστιν ὁ Δικαιόπολις.
