πηνίκ’ ἐστι τῆς ἡμέρᾱς; at what time?

Λούκιός σ’ ἀσπάζεται, ὦ πρόξενε! How late in the day is it? Πηνίκ’ ἐστὶ τῆς ἡμέρᾱς;

Πηνίκα means “at what precise point of time?” “at what hour?”

Πηνίκα μάλιστα; “About what o’clock is it?”

Πηνίκ’ ἄττα; “At about what hour?”

Πηνίκα τῆς νυκτός; “What time at night?”

Πηνίκ’ ἐστὶν ἄρα τῆς ἡμέρᾱς;

How could we respond?

Τῇ πρώτῃ ὥρᾳ· τῇ δευτέρᾳ, κτλ.

Πηνίκα τῆς ἡμέρᾱς ἐγείρεσθαι εἴωθας; What time of day do you usually wake up? Practice by writing your answer in Greek below! Ἴθι χαίρων.

It seems like a lot of question words in Ancient Greek start with pi.

Luke Amadeus Ranieri

That’s an excellent observation! The origin of many of these are Proto-Indo-European words that start with *kʷ-, giving us qu- in Latin and π- or τ- in Greek. Compare quīnque with πέντε for a rather dramatic example of both occurrences in the same word.
