Many unused/alternate panels and script passages will post two hours after this strip goes live, in tiers 2 & 3!

I just stayed with my friend Uncle T, and Uncle T has a dog named Beans. Many dogs are called "rescue" dogs, but with Beans that's an understatement. Discovered as a feral gang mutt, covered in scars, sporting badly-healed broken limbs, and wildly unmannered, Uncle T's family took him in. The first time I stayed with them he snuck into my guest room and pissed all over the bed — which I discovered with the back of my neck. His yapping was ceaseless, and he ruled his bowels with caprice. He had no ground manners, and the manners he did have told you what you needed to know about his previous environs.

Now, two years later, Beans (who goes to obedience classes the way a soldier wears green) is a calm and curious gentleman. He appears quite set to approach his dotage in snorty (for there is obvious pug in his lineage) comfort and happiness. Beans, this strip is for you.

The agility course is the only part of the dog show that in any way understands dogs.

Isaac Guysaac

Westminster Dog Show absolutely designed to be watched on one of those tiny desktop tube TVs that security guards watched the Truman Show on before the internet

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

You are fired for making me cry. Both about Beans and Beef's idea of the Having Been Through Too Much Shit show.

Bruce Wright

I don't whimper when the doorknob turns, but I do tense up and check for the nearest exit opposed

mutecypher

Beef. Hang tough, dude!

Achewood

we're talkin straight up dang

Glen N

The other parts always feel like "to what extent can you make this dog not behave as a dog does"

Achewood

except for when the dachshunds look down the weave poles and are like, "they did this to humiliate us."

Lisa Taylor

Dew of Elan. C'mon man, I'm trying to do honest labor here.

Achewood

My next Fuck You Friday will be about me being fired! Unfair.

Achewood

Whenever the cat does the scratching post I know somebody is breaking in with a street blade that has fentanyl on it

Jay Y

My main sadness at the close of the last arc is that as Beef is once more without means, he cannot build A Home for Scared People, who would likely top that show if only they had the wherewithal to enter.

Derek Adams

Beef is missing the mark in that the dog show entrants are the breeders, not the dogs. Every dog on that stage is getting treats and having a great day. But I suppose Westminster Genetic and Behavioral Modification Competition doesn't really fit on a brochure!

Achewood

oh, that's all he does. He's about to go straight won ton, alone.

Achewood

Taken out of context, that trio of words now sounds rather goofy to me.

Achewood

What is the topiary out front of the Home For Scared People

jordan b.

Connie in the last panel ... oof.

Ben Wilinofsky

A large, square hedge preventing them from being perceived

Josh Egbert

Beef not being the most in-demand Cooler in Vegas feels like a sliding door got stuck somewhere.

Hunter Tammaro

Beef's proposal could effectively find his Magreaux dog so it can be humanely destroyed before doing any damage.

Achewood

What I learned from my dog show days is that there are the breeders, the owners (the wallet), and the hired handlers who actually run the dog around. They're all lunatics, but the owners tend to be the real Jennifer Coolidge types.

Achewood

Sorry pal. Next one will be a comedy one.

Achewood

"There but for the grace of god," he thinks whenever he looks out over the bar.

Achewood

Now I'm thinking about an "agility" competition for the Magreaux group. Finding newer, better ways to terrorize their marks.

Achewood

I guess that makes more sense than a large Goofy or Spiderman

Daniel Burt

Far too much in the way of involved crotch inspections for what should otherwise be a nice pastime looking at dogs.

Nicholas Williams

There is a bar in Brussels owned by a dude who lays in a cozy little bivouac by the front window watching soccer on an ancient TV. I’m not sure how the TV receives signal: perhaps it’s old VHS tapes of past matches although the kit seems fairly updated so who the hell knows. His daughter tends the bar and when it gets busy he abandons his repose and helps out. It’s all rather delightful and I’m happy to see Cornelius running a similar business, where the owner can watch programs on a mysteriously operational television.

2scrogz

well that's alright i suppose

Achewood

Yes, especially the part where they wear little bow ties and monocles

Achewood

What's a Las Vegas "Cooler"? I am not as young as I once was. Is it a person who performs at the spherical place?

Ben Wilinofsky

If only someone would approach us with the love, patience, care, and belief that we were worth the effort shown Beans, we would almost never whimper when we turned the doorknob

Lisa Taylor

Immediate inspiration for: a tattoo, a brand of kombucha, a velvet-heavy line of loungewear for men, a very [very] secret society

Shawn Warren

At the bar one night on TV I saw a dog show that consisted entirely of the owner chucking a stick very far over a pool and whichever dog both successfully caught it and landed the furthest was the winner. Perhaps Beef could enjoy a dog show in this format.

b.zap

That TV from page xiii of the Shroves-Bishopthorpe catalogue

Achewood

I had to travel yesterday and got the full How's Your Father, which was strange because nothing beeped and I had zero metal on So that's what I thought you were talking about at first

Josh Egbert

A "cooler" is a possibly mythic being, a person who's vibe is so low that the casinos hire them to loiter around gaming tables where people are enjoying too much success. There's a an excellent film starring William H. Macy titled "The Cooler", where such a fellow has such a job until he finds love and is no longer a corporate approved bummer.

Achewood

I mean, what are you gonna do

Achewood

I keep getting stuck on how somebody could watch so much soccer and not soon realize they were throwing away the miracle of life

RocketMermaid

With lots of slide whistles and men being punched on the erection?

Achewood

I won't even start to think of the money it took to make that dog not aggro-shit in the least-shit-appropriate places

Jay Y

It's important though that the hedge be purely functional and in no way maze-like.

Nicholas Williams

He might watch other things but on the three occasions I’ve been there it has been soccer. I get the feeling that his daughter really wants him to get the fuck out but if he doesn’t show up at “work” he will instantly die.

Daniel Burt

Sorry, you're absolutely right, I should have been clear I meant dog shows. Hope you're ok and no civil liberties were infringed, not to politicise but, to a foreign observer, U.S airports do seem a little more charged just recently.

Achewood

Yeah the ones where the dog gets to jump super far in the water, Red Bull Sports style, are the best dog shows. Imagine if there were blobs of peanut butter floating in the water too

Achewood

Yeah, that's the 2024 model. Takes a lantern battery, but is proudly adaptable to the Alternating Current method of power transmission. Simply write in for the necessary cabling.

Ryan Boyle

It's a Fuck ME Friday

Derek Adams

I was going to joke about a human competition that sees which humans can thrive long enough without care, comfort, or creativity until I realized I was just describing capitalism

Achewood

next week we hope to return with at least a gentle chuckle

Achewood

A real, "Lady and the Tramp-Stamp." [animated trombone emoji gif]

Abby

😭😭😭

Oppido

I can see Teodor being the opposite of a professional cooler, in that everyone around him feels so much better about themselves by comparison that the actual chips stand up and start doing a little dance.

Bungus Bronbo

A version of "seriously fucked up but improving" where the crowned winner is the dude who staggered in to the contest six hours late but still made it.

Achewood

I got charged $23 for a guy fieri turkey sandwich, which only compounded the injury to my liberties

Achewood

NOW you’re talkin with butter!

Achewood

SO secret. Robes, a scepter, round haircuts.

Achewood

Ah thank you, this is a great concept

Bungus Bronbo

"There but for the grace of god go I" is a useful thing to think every time you see anyone ever

Josh Egbert

The scent is redolent of the ship which hunted the whale who's blubber was used to fuel the lantern.

Josh Egbert

Soccer or Musicals, to which shall you dedicate your life?

Mark

You got me with "lantern battery." I dislike when people say chef's kiss, but it's appropriate.

Kayla Unknown

As a human being who no longer stiffens at the sound of feet on stairs, I feel this one in my bones.

GruntyGinMan

I was tracking it as one of those Sonys you got in the 90s and now it makes an appearance only on retro gaming you tube channels

Johnny Deans

Yeah… that there was a full swing punch right in the heart. Rooting for ya, Beans.

Alexander Rediger

I relate as a reformed product. Shot to gut. For me it was the garage door opening. I love you, Roast Beef Kazanzakis.

A. Hamster

Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote a musical about soccer. I feel like the doors should be padlocked and the audience should be given the option to leave during intermission for only twice the ticket price

A. Hamster

There ain’t no rent control in Flavortown

C C

I've been out of the loop for a couple weeks and I'm coming back to some rough chuckles (by the man who gave us the very concept of rough chuckles). Still I love a strip with Connie, he and Beef have always had a unique dynamic, I wish there was more time to explore and flesh it out. It seems like a vein of gold waiting to be discovered.

Asherdan

Shoot, now I'm contemplative. Balls.

Achewood

A Lithium receipt from CVS Pharmacy all stuck to his heel like toilet paper

Achewood

When you set someone a specific ringtone and it starts to give you heart palpitations, it's breakup time

Achewood

Oh, Beans lives better than all of us. These days.

Achewood

Didn't know this was going to connect so well — for me it was a specific ringtone. Well, any time the phone rang meant a bill was mortally overdue, but there was this one ex whose ringtone made me wish for death

Achewood

I think they have hung several times in the zines, and I think Beef's interviewed him in the in-universe stuff.

Achewood

Sorry, man. Yeah, the urine got all over the back of my neck.

C C

You are right, I have always thought they rubbed along together in a kind of a pure spiritual level (I also hate myself for writing that) it's not so much father and son, it's more Anakin and Yoda they are two masters at each end of the road to wisdom. p.s. This is not to presume Beef will fall in to the darkness and do in the younglings, I'm trying to make another point entirely.

Chris Warren

This one is great. Go, Beef, go.

Shawn Ritchie

I feel like I say this a lot around here lately, but: jesus CHRIST Onstad

Professor Hazard

Bet you didn't count on that nice signage art carrying with it the stochastic temporal baggage of saying "Cornelius has been saying overlong sentences behind this bar for 20 years now". I hope the building is owned outright, since Beef seems to be the only customer.

Achewood

Who's saying overlong sentences now, pal!

Achewood

Beans had a hard life. It's important that everybody feels bad about that.

Much as Roast Beef once posited about opening a place for people to feel safe, I do have a dream of opening a lounge for stoned people to just hang out and make conversation and order highpersons' food. I will call it Highman's Secret Castle

Michael G.

Wow a bullseye shot right in the heart. Some pretty good writing for beef here.

Achewood

Beans has a pool and 24/7 couch service.

Achewood

He's watching the regular human Westminster. It's the best version of Westminster he could find.

Achewood

These are just transcripts of actual Moments, a lot of thing just come off the various Ring cameras around the town.

Lionstooth

why would you attack me, personally, like this

aaron bielejewski

im not sure how canonical it is to suggest that Beef grew up in a house with doorknobs
