In this first of what may become a series, we examine the roads not taken — strips which could have been. Here, from a quarter century ago, are riffs on the very first Achewood strip, October 1, 2001, "Philippe is standing on it."

That DR-55 won't program itself

Anthony Thompson

“Shelves? Where we’re going we don’t need shelves.”

Charles Richter

That last panel reminds me of the end of the Twilight Zone episode "Five Characters in Search of an Exit;" the Achewood story ends there, stillborn, in this alternate world.

Ian Stewart

The end! A moral: "Put it away. Let's not do any of this."

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

Imagining what Youtube would be had it been created by this crew of knuckleheads.

Achewood

I could be the 298th-greatest assistant QA director in Silicon Valley if I’d stayed the original course

Achewood

Dusty, occasionally pulled down and mangled by the dog.

Achewood

Indeed! Fact: there has never been a shelf depicted in Achewood. (This is probably not a *true* fact)

Achewood

Someday I’ll just plug it into Claude and leave the room until I hear New Order Substance 2

Ian Stewart

Just imagine! Reaching that pinnacle and still desperately scrambling to afford a mediocre circa-1960 ranch-style tract home in East Palo Alto

Bruce Wright

Living in a crackerbox duplex for a mere $4K a month, where some walnuts once grew

Achewood

The crappy one I lived in in 1998 is listing at 2.5mil

Achewood

Eating ramen by the dim light of the Bitcoin mining tower’s power supply LED

Ian Stewart

One thing that's always made me cynical about "Silicon Valley" proper. (And the realtors cynically extending its liminal borders to encompass more and more of the Bay) Neighborhoods and quality of life do not seem much different from where I grew up in Hayward across the bay, or the older parts of the various exurbs half the population evacuated into. Oh, it's next to Stanford, well great, that means my neighbor is probably a weirdo rationalist eugenicist who always wants to talk about uploading his brain into an AI?

GruntyGinMan

That YT comment is MattDamonturningold gif distilled

Rob Dalton

pretty please chris bring back a "phillipe is standing on it" t-shirt i wore mine to tatters and now i am bereft and keening like a rusty door opened over the course of a quarter century

Achewood

Was that the very first cafe press one?!

Dan W

Holy crow we're older than Youtube!

Dan W

Achetube is unpleasant.

Nate

I'd love to see this become a thing. These are fun.

Distant Egg Song

August 26, 2003, for folks in the audience who also got curious

Shawn Warren

We all just want a sheet of paper to understand ourselves on

Gavin Byrnes

Beef might not be fatherless if the J cups had been real

Achewood

I wonder if young American boys still use Canada as a place where their fictitious ladies reside, or if the Internet has wiped out that reputational resource.

Achewood

There's one in the holiday shop, coming soon!

Achewood

Cool - thanks Nate. It's a fun exercise, but everyone must be assured they are non-canon. (Whatever that means.)

Achewood

I was expecting a lot of old guys holding their lower backs in pain after a golf swing, but what I saw was so much worse, CLICK HERE

Achewood

Older, but thanks to the incredibly tiny size of bacteria, equally laden with toxins

Achewood

Holy mother of dingus. I have one of those. I might put it in a shadow box. Sadly, I don't think a shirt with a tiny comic panel on it would do much business any more. The kids want Japanese letters and spiky hair androgynes with really small noses.

Achewood

I like how at the end of the gif he looks like half of Joe Rogan's guests

Achewood

Most of the Klutz Press-era Palo Altans have aged into homes, so yeah, it's probably a lot of Gale Boettichers, code lung, and people who spend all night on flight simulators.

Achewood

Nice one. There was a shelf in the super secret ice cream shop too.

GruntyGinMan

*thinks* man Chris has never seen Saving Private Ryan what the hell!

GruntyGinMan

Sometimes you do have a dad and you still end up aping uncorrected behavior. Shout out to the FB Cho group who corrected it for me(serious)

Achewood

To my heavily tiered and qualifier-heavy credit, I last saw that movie twenty-seven years ago.

GruntyGinMan

We're older than the Patriot Act!

GruntyGinMan

The world we grew up in is gone

Achewood

Interestingly, so is the skin we grew up in

Nate

Consider me assured, then.

Miles McMahon

I have nothing important or funny to say here, but this post made me smile so damn big.

Achewood

that, to me, is important, brother.
