I was talking with this subscriber, M.B., and he said that the "Out-Of-Character-Comix!" one-offs were among his favorite strips. It got me to thinking about the challenge of writing brief, single-gag pieces. For me, they are more difficult than long strips, as their brevity requires elegance. Alright, that was kind of an assholey way to say that I recognize that the punchy early stuff is many peoples' favorite, and I'll be trying my hand at it again.

(Oh, and, this strip wasn't written using AI. Large Language Models still do a fairly unconvincing Todd.)

If we're going to see some one-offs again, maybe there's a good-old-fashioned Fuck You Friday in the future?

Ola Leier

It's a Fuck Your Requests, But In An Interesting Way Friday!

For what it's worth, the longform rambly comics were the purest Achewood to me. Throw in a storyline arc and I'm absolutely raw tickled.

rockuba

achewood ist rad

You know come to think of it, Todd really is sort of like a really rude language model. Except he doesn't learn. Sucking dick bought this van.

And you know Chris I think all of us would read your grocery list with enjoyment

I love the ol' short stuff, it's my favorite. Brevity is indeed difficult.

One of my favorite "short-form" Achewood tropes is when nude men wrestle each other in hot tubs

Jay Y

AI could never respond to a question about reproductive rights with "Bitches gotta take their cunt pills! I ain't wearin' no gunny sack!"

The return of T-T-T-T-Todd T. Squirrel!!!! I live every day with the regret that I never bought the Todd Rampant t-shirt.

Nicholas Williams

You know what I bought today? Some fuckin' rad-ass car tires.

My favorite arcs were insane things like Cartilage Head, but I’m not expecting a return to that until we’re good and warmed up.

Kayla Unknown

And just like that, "shart-gargler" carves itself into my lexicon.

RBM

My favorites are Ray’s Toilet Party and the various Magical Realism ones. Not many laffs in Cartilage Head but they are indeed beautiful

I held my cursor over the image to bring up the alt text, just in case that was back too. Betting I'm not alone.

To me, the biggest "out-of-character" element of this strip is the suggestion that Todd was ever at one point in possession of fifty bucks.

Oppido

I'm so glad someone else remembers that one, because it genuinely might be the Achewood strip I think of most. I read that alt text ("You can do whatever you want in life") at a formative age, and I think I'd be someone different today if I hadn't encountered it when I did.

Just 'cause he thinks somebody owes him money, doesn't mean he ever had that money in the first place.
