A few weeks ago I was conducted on a trip down memory lane by journalist and long-era Chochacho Alex Siquig. Mr. Siquig had lit upon the idea of covering the return of Achewood for Metro Silicon Valley, selling his editorial board on a bio of a comic strip that was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. (And which, like most Bay Area children, has abandoned that sprawl for parts more clement.)

We go from the very beginning in 2001 through the present day, this time with long-forgotten and never-declared details teased out into the light. The more those flickering years hurtle out of reach, the more the highs feel high, the more the pains pain, the more the hidden structure and meaning of the journey presents itself; there's a good wedge of it here for you.

Next week will see me travel to Patreon HQ in SF to chat with founder Jack Conte at an all-company meeting. Mr. Conte, I wear a men's medium, and have no dietary restrictions other than an abiding distaste for sardines, decibels, and waiters who squat in order to amplify the intensity of their eye contact. (I also wear a 10.5D, if there are any Patreon shoes.)

I am still refinishing hardwood floors and scraping my house for a fresh coat of paint before the Portland rains begin again in earnest. I also upgraded my car insurance.

Last night Lauren cooked a chipotle-infused Mexican casserole that featured an ingenious bottom layer of crinkle-cut French fries. It was like four chubby "wet burritos" nestled together and baked, with a top layer of cheese and black olives. It was the perfect ending to a day of upgrading my car insurance and refinishing hardwood floors.

If anyone is refinishing their hardwood floors, I could be persuaded to prepare an installment showing the many stages and low-grade, possibly incorrect insights I have developed. But I do not expect this to be the case.

I am well pleased to hear about your car insurance upgrades. I advise framing one of the insurance cards for your mantle. Many people tuck them away in their wallet or some other dark place, as though they're ashamed of it. I say display it with pride.

TL;DR: Cool, cool. You know what? I'm just going to say it. Achewood played a part in my second marriage. Dude and I met, hit it off, and he showed it to me about a month into dating (mid August 2002), when Beef was on the moon and Phillippe had lately met the ghost of Billy Idol. I was hooked. That marriage ended for good in 2017, but to this day the strip's archive is in my media bookmarks, a t-shirt proclaiming my love for dancing like there's ass in my pants lives in my closet, those wide and long hardcovers stick weirdly out of my bedroom bookcase and my texts to my daughter are sprinkled with Lil Nephew bits because they make her cringe so hard. My relationship with Achewood is old enough to legally drink alcohol and has lasted longer than any relationship with a man I've ever had except my dad. So of course its return should be celebrated and promoted. When you put your work out there, you never know how many lives you touch and in what way until they speak up. Thank you for being part of my young to now middle adulthood and until however long you decide to make stuff. CRISPY STELLAS and GEWORDS TRA MINNER all around!

True Tales of the Illuminati

Today I learned that I wear the same shoe size as Chris Onstad. It makes me feel, somehow, like I should have done more with my life.

you mean the deductible... that I boned?

Hey, La Fondue isn't "bygone", it's still going strong in downtown Saratoga!

Kara Brugman

Is Lauren willing to part with this recipe?

I have enjoyed all the updates on matters mundane, personal, or seemingly trivial so far. But a theoretical future post just about floor refinishing might be where I draw my “how much to share” line.

Achewood outlived my 2001-2017 marriage, too! High-five!

Michael Akey

I dont know, more floor refinishing content might move the needle quite a bit. Im down.

'low-grade, possibly incorrect insights' beats 99% of what I have to read each day. Hit me!

tell your friend the squig that "he looks back fondly of" ain't any kind of way to end a sentence

Datura

just refinished my floor, what are you using? i used that rubio stuff cuz i like drying oils but they take too long to dry without nasty solvents and heavy metal salts

Lindsey Sanford

Your size is noted in regards to Patreon swag (we have a secret closet of swag, the password is "I want swag"). Tempted to talk to you like a squating waiter but strongly dislike heavy eye contact. See you on Wednesday.

Cory

I’m about to hire someone to refinish. Hopefully they know what they’re doing since they’re the only contractor in my area I was able to woo. Was intimidated by all the sanding. How was your experience?
