The first of two holiday missives which you will receive from Peter H. "Nice Pete" Cropes this year. Read along and enjoy this heart-warming coming of age story, set deep in the impoverished but hopeful past of our reflective protagonist.

A rough draft of this piece originally appeared in the Fanflow on December 10, 2009, but it has been so heavily updated as to carry an entirely different import, pathos, and portrayal of alcoholic depravity.

I tend to catch these on my work-issued laptop, so someday some IT auditor is going to have a hell of a time figuring out my ~/Downloads directory

as someone on the it side of this transaction leaving the same confusing trail in my own wake i assure you the future it auditor will not care in the slightest

I have a script that runs daily and cleans out anything older than seven days from ~/Downloads; this is not due to privacy concerns or anything (I'm also on the IT side and second the "we will not care in the slightest" opinion) but just to not let it balloon to literal gigabytes

Did this take place before or during the head shrinking affliction Pete's dad suffered from? Seems like before.

I swim a few times a week and while underwater, since reading this, have been unable to dislodge the phrase 'a desire to rival that which a drowning man feels for the surface' from my head, where I expect it to remain for at least the rest of my natural life.
