With a special shout to all our friends/enemies, we are back with Part 2 of our deep dive into Carl Schmitt, Nazi jurist, total weasel, and dead-fish-painting-hater! This episode follows Schmitt through the year 1933, his precarious position in the early Nazi state and the utter shamelessness he employed to get out of that precarious position.

Damn, just realized the episode title Dungeon Crawler Carl Schmitt was right there and we didn't go for it... We have failed you.

The best ideas come seconds after the point of no return

The way I just squealed when I got the notification for this ep. I usually wait on multipart episodes so I can binge it all at once. Mama's about to have a GOOD (read: educational and mildly discomforting) night 💚

Given the election results in Sachsen-Anhalt this is really topical! I'm excited that Moira learned how to say "Reichstag" (no shade at all, it makes no sense that we say it this way :D).

Do the family vote weirdos get into Schmidt at all? Bc his argument against privacy in voting is sounding like something they would like 😬

One thing I'd add about the Concept of the Political that's easy to miss is Carl Schmidt tries to justify Antisemitism from first principles. Arguing if you don't believe in original sin (mankind as naturally bad) you are innately an enemy. Iirc the attempt to ground antisemitism nonracially was viewed with suspicion in the Nazi party.

Every time I hear "Hobbesian" I assume you're referring to Michael Hobbes

I never thought too much about public voting/public acclamation until the one year my state decided to do caucuses for the primaries. It was by FAR the most uncomfortable I have ever been when casting a vote. It also seemed *sooo* much more based on popularity and which group could cheer the loudest than on, you know, each person's actual evaluation of the candidates. It is not lost on me that this seems to be why Schmidt wanted to abolish the private vote. (I know some people really like caucuses, and to each their own. It just really, really was not for me.)

Adrian uses an expression 3x and I can't tell if he is saying "rhet coming" (making a verb of rhet composition) or reconning as in reconnaissance or neither. . .hoping the former, as I watch my language and literature humanities department get rhet comed . . .

Ren

Another book? Adrian, your output is crazy. How do you find the time to do everything you do?

He’s saying “retconning”, a portmanteau of “retroactive continuity.” I know it mostly as a fandom term used when a new work in an ongoing franchise contradicts and revises something from an older work in that franchise.

Dang, I learned yet another thing from IBWTR. TY.

Claremonster Glenn Elmers’ 2021 “‘Conservatism’ is no longer enough,” (in The American Mind, “A Publication of The Claremont Institute”) has pretty much everything in Schmitt’s Friend-Enemy dichotomy and declare-an-exception-suspend-all-the-“normal”-rules laid out in the bluntest terms.

Hello, will you guys ever make an episode about Sylvia Plath? I think you guys would cover it phenomenally.

Every time I hear Adrian say "Wolk" instead of "Volk", I'm like "Come on, Adrian Dobb, say it more like Adrian Daub!" (Thanks for teaching me the history stuff that my Comprehensive School Education didn't cover.)

It’s really confusing when I hear Michael Hobbes say it.
