Heyyyy Shan hope you’re okay, brown lightning here with another comment of the week - how you recognised Karen G with a face full of makeup I’ll never know! This episode is ‘absolute cinema’ as far as I’m concerned. I love how the Doctor, Who had already decided everybody dies changes his mind because of his friend and saves the lives of 4 innocent people. RTD chose James Moran to write this episode based on the strength of the Torchwood episode Sleeper. Quick history lesson: In Pompeii in 79AD thousands of people died when a Volcano erupted. David Tennant visited the site of Pompeii for Dr Who confidential. They also filmed parts of this episode in Rome in a 48 hour window. The name "Caecilius" (kae-KIL-ee-us) translates roughly to "blind", which might be a reference to the people of Pompeii being "blind" about the upcoming eruption. According to David Tennant on the episode commentary track, when the Doctor breaks off Lucius's arm, the original script had the Doctor throw it on the ground to break it into pieces. Tennant requested that this part be taken out, as he figured it was far too violent and destructive for the Doctor. Both him and Catherine Tate still consider the final cut to be "aggressive" by the Doctor's usual standards. Francesca Fowler suffered from a bad case of food poisoning during the filming of this episode, which is why Evelina's looks rough as arseholes towards the end. RTD had been interested in the devastation of Pompeii ever since seeing Pompeii: The Last Day (a 2003 documentary) He considered writing a script about Pompeii for the eleventh episode of Season One, but it quickly became clear that this would have to be a budget-conscious adventure. RTD eventually wrote Boom Town instead. 9.04 million viewers when this episode aired in the uk. This is one of my favourite episodes ever, I hope you enjoy the journey. Brown lightning out.

Shan, you noticed things in this episode that I didn't know for years afterwards. Jay, we need to follow no spoilers now or she'll come after us. You know what she's capable of.

Zoot!

Donna really shines in this episode, I'm glad you had some laughs at the things she says. I like their chemistry together, it really makes the end of this episode really powerful. From Donna helping the Doctor push the lever, to her begging him to save someone. So good.

The Doctor and Donna being called brother and sister is the best way to sum up their relationship. Nothing romantic, just platonic and that's it, a breath of fresh air after the last two companions were in love with the Doctor (or three if you include Jack). This episode I thought was good, best bit was the Doctor using the water gun as a weapon, feels like something Sam and Dean would use it they fought a fire monster.

Briefly since I didn't make a comment on the last episode. When I first saw Donna was coming back I was disappointed because I didn't really like her in the Runaway Bride episode, but so far I've actually liked her. Also, loved your reaction to a surprise Rose showing up and the series establishing that Donna and the Doctor are going to be platonic and not romantic, I feel like we've had enough of the romance right now. Wow, you recognized Karen Gillan quick, I didn't know her yet when I first watched this episode, so there was no recognition for me. I'm curious if I would have recognized her that fast if I did know who she was. I've always really liked this episode mainly for the discussions between Donna and the Doctor about not being able to save people and then the Doctor having to be the one to cause it to happen and Donna's plea to save someone. I thought that was all great. I also liked that scene with the seers duel reading the Doctor and Donna, I thought that was an interesting scene.
