I was a little worried about you with this episode when you said you'd been depressed. Not gonna lie... that was my reaction, too. But I couldn't figure out how to warn you without spoiling. (To this day, that's why I hate "don't spoil me" ethos: I went into Little Women unspoiled when I was a kid and got all this "Oh, I don't want to spoil it for you!" stuff, and then the big event was a major character death. I've gone into everything spoiled since.

KiwiJello

Procrastinating with this one. You seemed so upset :( Well, I'm going in. Just know the tears will flow. Joss Whedon can be so mean :(

Craig Mcdonald

Some of the best on screen acting ever from SMG this ep.

chris bullers

If you didnt know, Joss learned this because of his own experiences. Not quite the same thing, but this really was a landmark episode that is credited with historically important episode that helped people come to terms with things.

s jaco

Anya Speech is my favourite part of this episode, though special shout out for Willow and Tara's first kiss.

s jaco

Also I love the complete absence of sound, that was such a good choice, sometimes sound emphilizes emotions but I think in these cases it would have stolen it away.

Chris Peacock

All I’m gonna say here is my real comment is gonna be on the YouTube video. Even if the YouTube video is just a link to Patreon.

Everyone gave a stellar performance here. I loved Emma Caulfield in this episode, and Alyson Hannigan. It was really Michelle Trachtenberg's first chance to give a great performance, and she delivered.

Chris Peacock

When I said I'm saving my comment for YouTube, I meant about the episode. I'll comment on your reaction now. Don't feel bad about not bawling through the whole thing. You did still cry some, and more importantly, your reaction was very genuine and your were still clearly very sad. Tears aren't the only form of grief. Far from it. Fantastic reaction. I hope you got plenty of rest after watching. Best wishes.

James W

Personally I don't care how any other reactors experienced this episode. I'm not here to see you react like any other reactors, I'm here to watch in solidarity with you. I knew this one would be hard going for you, and I hope that you know that I care about you and appreciate what you do. The majority of us here are huge Buffy fans, and huge fans of yours, so it's an honour to be able to share this world with you. These characters and their journeys are important to me and seeing you experience their stories for the first time is refreshing, like seeing these episodes through new eyes. I hope that makes sense :)

Holi117

I know its weird to think of this episode as a fan favourite... I think for me, the reason its in my top 5 episodes... is because of just how well Joss wrote and captured the episode... everything is so "real" and so raw... each characters reaction is exactly right for them... I love that tara and willow's first on screen kiss is here, and its natural and there is no fanfare, they are just in love and caring for each other... I love how the episode is shot, and we're kind of forced to endure, and think, and feel time passing slowly for the characters... Even the part where we think maybe joyce is okay, then find out its not - i love that joss did that, cos that's exactly what buffy would be imagining and wishing for inside her head while everything is going on... I'm so glad you DID decide to react to the episode... you dont need to worry about whether you are quiet or crying or not... none of us judge on that stuff. It was a great episode and reaction, and I was getting tearful on and off all the way through even after god knows how many rewatches of this one... Lots of love x

Brandon Wiesner

I'm glad you didn't decide not to record your reaction. I didn't mind at all that you put it off because I knew it would be worth the wait. The way you felt, I could plainly see as you were watching. You didn't even need to say very much. It is a hard episode and in a show where so many things happen that are supernatural, this is probably the most real life thing to happen to everyone on the show. It really makes you consider death and how it affects you and everyone around you, something that so few shows of this nature can do, because they're normally so far removed from reality. The episode truly stands out as a brilliant take on tragedy and it really makes you feel everything the characters were going through. I'm looking forward to seeing you back to your adorable, upbeat self again with the next Buffyverse episodes.

Well said, Chris... Her reaction was mostly silent, and the characters on screen are silent, the music is even silent... I guess that's meta or some junk.

Andrew Pulrang

Your reaction was clearly genuine, and that’s what matters. Actually, any more intensity or comments would have detracted from the episode itself, so well done. So many great moments and details here. And since I’ve seen it many times, watching this time I was able to notice some really small details. The one that stands out the most to me was a little look that Tara gave Willow when they were all in the dorm room together. It was just before Anya’s breakdown. Anya had mentioned Xander crying, and Willow said, “It’s a thing we do” but with kind of a sarcastic tone ... as we know, Willow doesn’t like Anya very much. And Tara gave Willow this tiny little look that I interpreted as a very, very mild scolding ... like, “Don’t be mean Willow.” It says so much about their relationship. Even when they criticize each other it’s gentile. And it’s the first time I can recall Tara having a real opinion of her own, and not always just worshipping Willow. Maybe that was all just my imagination, but that look really seemed like it had a lot of meaning in it. Oh, and I loved Giles’ reaction on seeing Joyce. He obviously has this affection for her, not just as Buffy’s mother, and not even just because of the “Band Candy” hilarity, but sort of a nice mix of the two. And maybe a bit of connection with Joyce because in a way they are both parents of Buffy.

Nicholas Mims

Girl, I have to say I absolutely LOVE your reactions. The Body is such a hard one too. It's one of the greatest episodes of television EVER but it's such a hard episode to watch. But I just wanted to say that as much as we all love your reactions, your health (mental or other) is more important! We will all be fine if you need to take a break or a day or two or however long! We love you!

Nicholas Mims
>>14337361

No I completely agree with you! Anya and willow were always my two favorite characters and the fact that they never quite saw eye to eye was a doozey for me! But I definitely agree about Tara!

Timotey Kuhn

(written before watching this) Don't ever apologise for the way you display sadness. Every single human being shows their sadness in different ways. Anyone who gives you even the slightest bit of grief over that needs to have a new one torn. It frankly would have felt even uglier at my end if I was watching you sobbing like mad from one end to the other, like I was terribly intruding on a sad moment in your life where I had no business being. TBH, it still feels like I'm about to intrude on a hugely private moment that I have no business being around. I'm frankly still very sorry you had to go through this. This episode is a whole new level of putting your emotions through the wringer in a relentless way from one end of the episode to the other unlike any of the past episodes that have momentary attacks of emotional sadness, like "Passion", "Becoming, Part 2", or "Amends". So, again.....I'm sorry you had to experience this,.

CaptainNice

Hi ASR, sorry about the advanced pressure for you to reaction in the "right" way to this ep. That's messed up, shame on the fan(atics). You took some time to pause before and after "The Body", that's more than fair. I think this is when Joss cemented hos rep as a right old bastard who'll kill anyone. :) When I rewatch Buffy; I get to this part and binge until the sadness goes away. On this rewatch, you're making everyone dwell on the sad bits. You do you, it's all good. :)

HuntingSwan

Intervention'll cheer you up! I mean really though!

Talmet

Don't worry about your reaction ASR. We watch these to see your real reaction, whatever that happens to be. There are some "reactors" who obviously overact or fake reactions to try and meet/exceed their viewers expectations. You don't do that. Which is probably why most of your patreon subscribers enjoy your reactions as much as we do. Oh, as a guy who has never worn eyeliner (waterproof or other)....I always assumed waterproof eyeliner was to like protect against rain, or washing your face or something like that. Maybe I'm wrong, but wouldn't they call it "tearproof" if it was supposed to not run if you cry?

Talmet
>>14338032

Without any spoilers, Intervention has several of my favorite scenes in the entire show. Actually, it has one of my, like top 5 all time scenes in any show/movie.

Titan Gaming

I'll be honest... i've never been able to take Emma Caulfield's performance in that scene seriously... i keep hearing people, like yourself, say they were touched by Anya's scene there... but i found her performance to be comical, and i honestly didn't appreciate it... I felt like it was very inappropriate, and misplaced. it was one of those "what the hell is this?" "facepalm" moments... it really took me out of the show. it wasn't anya''s reaction to the situation... it was Emma's portrayal of the situation, the way she gauged her voice, damn near had me cracking up. in fact, just to take the episode seriously, during rewatches, I tend to skip that part, cause I just can't take her seriously. There are a few things that need to be achieved to hold my attention in a show... and a big one, was believability, and she did not convince me whatsoever. I'm sure I'm going to upset people with this... but just simply confuses me when people speak highly of that scene... we're all different, and we all react differently to everything, just like people seem to love Glory... I can't stand her, I like Ben, Dawn, Tara, the relationship is beautifully handled between her and WIllow (more specifically, Willow character development), though i still prefer Willow and Oz! fun fact: that kissing scene, was the very first lesbian kiss on tv! anyway, this episode was perfect, just that one scene with Anya, that threw me off, I guess i'm alone in that, I am of the age of those who would have watched the show at the proper age when it first aired, though i personally watched it just a few years ago, so i'm a bit older so that may be why I didn't see that particular scene the same way so many others had.

Jon Dub
>>14339577

Have to say in the 16 years since that aired, you are the only person I have ever seen who has found that scene anything other than heartbreaking.

Einar Sigurðsson

I enjoy your reactions, not what other people believe you should portray. Now, I however will cry like a baby just like everytime I watch this. *hits play*

Jon Dub

Dont worry about your reaction, I think I speak for everyone when I say I would like you to react as you would normally, rather than play it up for the camera

S144

Don't worry about your reaction. I can speak for myself that I prefer a genuine one. Not to diss on TWB, but from what I have seen of his reactions, he comes off a little fake and trying to put on a show and react the way he thinks we want him to.

UTU49

To me, this was the episode where Buffy the Vampire Slayer became more than a great TV series, and became something else entirely: a cultural icon... or a mystical experience... or a narrative journey... or Joss Whedon's sneaky way of inserting art and philosophy into a supernatural comedy. I love The Body... but I totally understand the people who say they've watched it once and will never watch it again.

UTU49

Shan, you're so special. I watch your videos (and other reactors) because I want to share an experience with you and your other viewers. I've said this to Van, that I love her videos because she cares about the shows, and she films herself. I'm not looking for you to "do" or say things in your videos. Although if you could do some handstands or some juggling, that would be pretty cool. I need to go tell Van this. Bye.

Chaotic Cam

This is a really hard episode, yeah. It's very real, not much supernatural in it. It's a real situation where Joyce died of a real thing. There's no music, so it's just really heavy, letting you feel your own emotions. It's hard, and I don't fault you for putting it off for so long. Your story about your grandpa connected with me too, I reacted in a similar way when my grandma died. I thought there might be something wrong with me because I wasn't breaking down like everyone else. Wasn't until about a week later that I had a moment alone. Like everyone else is saying, don't worry about your reaction not being 'enough' or something of the like. Everyone processes stuff like this differently, and your reaction was genuine. I'm sorry that you had to go through this, and I hope that you're okay. It really is a hard and draining episode on the emotions and psyche. If there's any plus to this though, I believe this is the only episode that's very emotionally draining and depressing like this. You got through it.

Spencer Williams

Spent 20 minutes writing a comment, decide to make an edit and then the whole thing just disappears for no reason...ugh. I'll just save it for when this goes on YouTube, doing long comments on Patreon is frustrating. Thank you for this episode Shan. I know it wasn't an easy watch, but seeing your heartfelt reaction to it means a lot.

Cheyne Johnson

I don't think any other tv I've watched in my life has portrayed the feeling of losing a close loved one like The Body. It's amazing.

Timotey Kuhn

(Is about to click on the episode to starts watching this) This feels so utterly wrong. I feel like I'm intruding on a private moment big time.

Robin Gibbons

I've seen this episode in the top tv episodes of any show ever lists so many times. For me it was my favorite episode of the series, then I lost my mom 3 years ago. I couldn't watch it for a few years. I can't believe how true this episode is shot and written. Truly a masterpiece of television history!

Timotey Kuhn

(stops at 35 minutes in and mentally meanders on whether or not to continue watching this for the next 10 minutes..).....Nope... Can't go on any further. I find watching this to be so horribly intrusive on my part that I just can't do it any more. To watch other people watching this episode feels just so.....off. I'll rejoin you once this unrelenting sadness has passed, because I don't feel I have any business watching this any further.

Shaun Stacy

You did amazing, sweetie. If ever there was an episode to cry the whole way through, it's this one. It takes guts to be vulnerable, especially in front of a camera. Also, your eyeliner was on point (as usual). <3

Brian Rayburn

This is one of those episodes I respect rather than love. During a rewatch I usually just skip it because it's too brutal and hits too close to home for me.

Timotey Kuhn
>>14337891

You've obviously then heard the old joke "So Joss Whedon & George R.R. Martin walk into a bar................................................and no-one got out alive.... :P

Hef

This episode is a powerful piece of work. No musical score, no melodrama - just the cold, hard reality of the situation. It shows how the news of the death of a loved one results in a wide range of differing thoughts, emotions and reactions - none of them wrong. It seeks to validate the viewer who has been through something like this themselves and prepare the viewer who has not.

Hef

But watching as someone sits through this episode is just plain wrong unless you really don't like them and want to see them in pain. I know this now. :'(

RevanTheRebel

There is no wrong way to process this episode, just as there's no wrong way to grieve. Don't worry about having to react a certain way, or feel like you have to perform for us. Just react in whatever way is genuine for you.

raymond julien

We love storytelling...but this one was so profoundly real!...……. Ultimately I think Anya says what we all wish 'Mortality is stupid'...…...Thank you for having the courage to stay with this one!

Monique Hunt

This episode is one of the many reasons why this show is still my favourite to this day. It is hard, it is heartfelt, it is real. I have been in Buffy's position and it...well, it's...

Warren Day

Dearest Shan, Thank you so very much for pointing out that Anya said "wish" in "I wish Joyce didn't die." I've seen this episode probably 30 times and never noticed that. Thanks for your amazing real reaction, and for unpacking your thoughts and feelings a few hours later.

Warren Day

PS The reason for the scene early on where the Paramedics revive Joyce ("as good as new. Buffy, thank God you found me in ti..." is Buffy is hoping/imagining this will happen. The reason why we don't see the Paramedic's eyes when he is talking to Buffy is Buffy can't focus on connecting at that moment in time. This episode is mostly based on Joss Whedon's experience of finding his mum.

Jarrod Wild

I don't know if someone already mentioned this, but Joss wanted the opening credits come as early as possible, and had the flashback scene at the beginning to get through the remaining credits (Guest Stars, Written/Directed by, etc...) so that the rest of the episode would not be distracted by all of that. God this episode kills me every time. I feel like I torture myself watching it again and again. Shan you did great getting through this. To quote Tara, "No. And yes, it's always sudden."

Amarantax

Shan, thank you for sharing this reaction with us, it was beautiful and honest. I dont have a loss experience so I dont relate very lose with Buffy in this episode, still it was a very powerful experience for me to watch it anyways, in other matter i just realized that all the end developing of IWMTLY and the body wherein the same day, actually in this episode everybody talk how early was, and Dawn was in school and such, a form of Joss of showing how life an change in such an abrupt way in just one day. This is not one of my favorites but definetly is in my heart.

Nancy Nicolai

The hardest thing in the world is taking care of your sick parent(my mom for 3 years💔)then find them gone ,cold ,with their eyes open & 22 years ago I was Buffy(except I was 34)and it wrecked me bc 3 years later it was my dad so this episode is always very hard for me time may pass it may get a little easier except when I watch things like this but what doesn't kill us does make us stronger right!?💕🌞👌😢

Timotey Kuhn
>>14363139

Feel the same way. To do this is to be horribly intruding on a heart wrenching private moment that you have absolutely no business being anywhere near. I tried doing it up until 35 minutes into the episode & just couldn't stomach it anymore.

Domenico Incannova

Dear Shan, if it is any comfort to you: my mom doesn't talk to my dad for 15 years, my brother not to my mom for 10 years, and I not to my sister for 4 years. So there is that... But it was a big comfort to me to hear that you are German as well! Thanks a lot for telling! 🎵"Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit!"🎵 Or if you are from Bavaria like me: 🎶"Gott mit dir, du Land der Bayern, deutsche Erde, Vaterland!"🎶

Will

Horrible episode, but very good. Really captured the horror of the unexpected death of somebody you love. :( It was good to watch it 'with' you though, even though I was probably crying more than you were.

Kaitlyn Welsh

your reaction to this episode was beautiful and i understand the hesitation to watch it..this episode is rough no matter how your coming to it.. i saw when i was younger dont remember what age but i can never watch it with out becoming numb in a way ( if that makes sense) because i lost my dad when i was 10 and it took me about 2 years to fully accept it. this episode is one that helped me understand what was going on,

Patrick - Excelsior

I actually first watched this episode when it originally aired and it was so well done in its portrayal of loss. I have been waiting to see what you would think of it. The strange thing for me is I was diagnosed last May with a large brain tumor. I had the surgery to have it removed exactly 1 week before you posted this reaction. It really changed my perspective on the last few episodes and especially this one as what happened to Joyce shortly after her surgery could also happen to me. Lucky for me it hasn't but still, the timing was ...

Ryan Wilson
>>14385157

Going through this myself, Joss was right to put that part in there. I mean you're in so much shock of what just happened you're having an inter-outer body experince at that moment you can't think or pay attention to anything.

Adam Misener

I'm rewatching your reactions to Buffy as something to do during this pandemic/isolation and just got to this episode. I should have skipped it. Instead, I spent 40 minutes crying my eyes out.
