Its probably deeper science than you needed but in genetics there is a 50/500 rule that says you need at least 50 people to avoid inbreeding in a few generations and at least 500 individuals to stave off genetic drift.

Trepanning (drilling a hole in a person's head) was used for seizures, head injuries, chronic headaches, etc. It doesn't make any sense to use it for chicken pox. But, even if they did, most people survived trepanning.

Very provocative episode. Most programs stay away from such on the nose religious theme for obvious reasons. I understand your reaction about the treatment of Teal'c, but its telling his skin color wasn't what set the townspeople off.

And it still occassionaly done today, for brain swelling. It really did help in some cases. It also has been used since the ancient days.

The actual rituals and beliefs shown here are pretty accurate for Medieval Europe and going into the modern age. The witches mark was a real belief. And they would single out people who didn't fit in for whatever reason. People with mental illnesses, single women who worked for themselves, and yes, people who were not white, were singled out and assumed to be witches. And yes, that includes males, although most were female. In fact, many of the things associated with witches, funny hate, bit cauldron, broomstick, are all associated with woman who used to be the primary people who made alcohol. When larger male-owned business started appearing competing with them is about when going after witches became huge, and when these things started being associated with witchcraft. Many historians believed it was used as a way to getting rid of the competition. And yes, the image of a white man going after a black man like that should make you uncomfortable, but it's also accurate. Non white people were often singled out as they very much stood out. The first person to be accused of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials, in fact, was a black slave named Tituba. The others were mostly outcasts, or people that were enemies and rivals of powerful families.
