I'm glad you're smiling! You broke my heart at the end of Field of Dreams when Ray's dad talks about heaven....

Happy Saturday Ames. Looking forward to both MOTA and FMJ reactions. FMJ is dark. I have a friend who didn't like FMJ because too dark and unsettling for her. I told her she might find Apocalypse Now more tolerable because doesn't have that sadistic-like boot camp. I like both FMJ and Apocalypse Now.

Full Metal Jacket is crazy! Although now whenever I see Pvt. Pyle (Vincent D’onofrio), I can’t help seeing Edgar from Men in Black 😂😂🪳

All war movies are dark and unsettling but FMJ was DARK and UNSETTLING, lol. I still love the movie but…damn. Platoon is my favorite Vietnamese War movie.

Carl Lyngholm

FMJ is a great movie that only suffers a bit because GySgt. Hartman (R. Lee Ermey) is such an overwhelming presence in the film that one he's gone, the rest of the film can't quite maintain that high, imo... Honestly, would have preferred Platoon, but still love FMJ. Looking forward to it.

What would be a fun game would be to guess the other three she watched that were heavy. My guesses, totally for comedic effect, are Sophies Choice, Funny Games, and The Killing Fields lol….that would round out a week where we would be irresponsible not to call in a welfare check on Ames.

Of all the films I’ve ever seen, Full Metal Jacket is the closest one to what real Marine Corps boot camp is like. One of my favorite parts is the look in everyone’s eyes when their head was shaved. My hair wasn’t that long to begin with, but it’s a real shock when they take it all off. That doesn’t last long because you’re so busy learning new things and getting screamed at constantly - it kinda takes your mind off everything else. As an aside, it might sound weird, but they take your graduation pictures early in your first month (boot camp is 3 months long). My expression is just vacant because I was so disoriented. Good times. My father, a Marine in the early 60s when this movie was set (I was in 86-92), right around the time of this movie, gave me the best piece of advice. He said “Don’t stand out. Don’t be the best at anything, and don’t be the worst”. Anytime you did something that caught the DI’s attention, you’d regret it. Not being the best was easy for me, but not being the worst was difficult because I was a lanky 6’1” and 145 pounds. One upside to that was I was put on double rations so I got twice as much to eat as most everyone else - not that we had much time to eat. I know I’m rambling, but a lot of my memories of that time are very vivid! The drill instructors never choked us, but most everything else, especially the swearing (though never quite as creative as the DI in the movie) was really accurate!

FMJ is 👌, you can't go wrong with Kubrick. Also watched MotA and I thought they ended it well. Glad to see they touched upon The Netherlands (my country) a little bit. A small part of The Netherlands was liberated in 1944. The failure of the Market Garden operation meant amongst other things that the rest of the country had to wait till spring 1945. The winter was extremely harsh that year and a lot of people suffered greatly with lack of food and other things. That's why you see them drop those provisions. The whole country was officially liberated on May 5th. We still celebrate that on that day with music festivals across the country. On May 4th at 8pm there is a national moment of silence for two minutes with several locations where ceremonies are held. All tv and radio stations go silent as well. It's always moving. And good to keep people aware that freedom is not a given, it is something that we always have to keep working at.

PUP! They did end it beautifully! Your comment brought tears to my eyes! What a wonderful way to celebrate the liberation and all that the Dutch endured and to never forget!!!

Looking forward to MOTA and FMJ, Ames! Seems like there's a lot to wrap up in MOTA. It will be interesting to see how they did it in one episode. Your FMJ reaction will be a first watch for me. Sounds like it will be intense! Here we go again! 😬
