🚨Spoilers Below🚨

This movie should be called “E.T The Emotional Rollercoaster”!!!! Nothing more devastating than seeing E.T laying half dead in a river next to a raccon!!!!

It’s soo crazy to have grown up hearing “E.T Phone Home” (but not a crazy amount) and playing Sharks in pools because of “Jaws” and I had never seen either! But that is the influence these movies have had on pop culture!! Steven Spielberg is truly one of the great film makers of our time ❤️

Again, amazed by the amazing work of the Puppeteers, the score by John Williams played on my heart strings, the shot compositions and cinematography was incredible! And that kid Henry Tomas deserved an Oscar! What happened to him? I hope he’s had a great career and not destroyed by being a kid actor! He was SO BELIEVABLE they all were amazing! Spielberg def knows how to pull a performance outta ppl, especially kids!

Bring your tissues! Never thought I would cry so much for a puppet! And I don’t even care how he fits into the milk crate!!! I loved those bike/car chases!!!!

Let me know your thoughts on E.T! Another one checked off the AFI list ✔️

Thanks for being here for my Bday Movie Month! And this week was oh so magical! You guys keep the dream alive and I thank my lucky stars everyday to have the best crew ever!

❤️✨❤️✨

That’s EXACTLY the reaction I was hoping for. Your summary pretty much captured the sentiment of everyone who saw it in theatres that summer of 82. (Poltergeist released same summer making Spielberg the undeniable God of Cinema). Spielberg called this his “small movie” after his success with RAIDERS. I remember the trailer was just the slow zoom in on E.T.’s hand gripping the door of the shed and everyone was like “WTF”?? But it was Spielberg so you knew whatever he was doing it was going to be good. I worked at a video store and Jim my co worker snagged a seat to a preview screening and told me he had never laughed so hard so I was there in line opening night and next to Porkys? I had never laughed so hard. John Williams BEST and most emotional score to be sure! Still a classic…FYI…screenwriter Melissa Mathewson was married to Harrison Ford when she wrote this. Ford even played Elliot’s principal but his scenes were eventually cut!

Not gonna lie. When I saw ET I was very young, probably too young. I thought it was very scary. I mean rolling the ball into the mist and it being rolled back. Come on now, you gotta run after that. Nothing from the movie really stayed with me, probably didn't understand most of it, except being scared by ET. He became my monster under the bed for those early years. When I found out years later that people found him a lovable creature and stuffed dolls were made I was shocked. At some point later I watched it again and being much older I could enjoy and respect the movie for what it was. However, till this day I cannot see ET without remembering what he represented to me all those years ago.

I'm so glad you mentioned the camera p.o.v. and how hidden all the adults' faces are. These have always been the things I get most excited for when I revisit this film. The entire experience is shown from the point of view of a child. The camera is positioned low, and we either see the adults at waist height, or looking up at them from below. We even experience the medical scenes near the end the way a confused child would, not understanding the chaos. The expression on your face when you saw Gertie break down, as the defibrillator is used on E.T. was heartbreaking. Drew's crying was real in that moment, as they did not tell her that was coming. The sound scared the crap out of her. One of my other favorite reactions was when you clocked that the lead scientist's face was revealed. I could tell you were trying to place why. That was so smart. We don't get to see the faces of any adults the children can't trust. The mother is always unobscured, but we don't see the scientist's face, until it's time to show us he can be trusted. "What can we do that we're not doing?" "I'm glad he met you first." One by one the doctors' faces are revealed, as they lower their masks. We see how sad they all are, not being able to save him, and its understood they aren't trying to hurt or experiment on him. I think I've only ever seen Henry Thomas in Gangs of New York since this, as Leo's best friend, but he's been in plenty. I know I've seen Legends of the Fall, but I can't remember how good he would have been in that. It's been too long. I'll never forget him in this one. His performance was brilliant.

Fun fact: E.T. came out in theaters one week after.. Star Trek 2!

Holy nostalgia overload, batman. I was only a little bit younger than these kids when I first saw this movie and it's been years since I've seen it all the way through. I figured what better time for a rewatch than with someone who's never seen it. Seemed like a good idea. Wrong. I nostalgia'd so hard I think I might pass out from the dizziness. Good grief. You should put disclaimers at the beginning of these videos for these kind of films. "Warning! If you lived through the 80's this video may cause you to search eBay to find an old, working atari that you can spend a fortune on just to play Pitfall just one last time before you die." Now, if you'll excuse me I need to go find a second job because nostalgia ain't cheap.

"E.T.'s got the zoomies..." 🤣

Great reaction! Happy Birthday! Those candies were Reese's Pieces.

Happy birthday Ames. Thanks for the reaction. It's been years since I had seen this movie. Good doing a rewatch along with your reaction. John Williams is a creative genius. I did not see this movie in the theater in 1982 b/c I was an impoverished 18-year old in college supporting myself essentially working full time, and thought too narrowly of E.T. as only a kid's movie. I remember the movie being a big deal -- well deserved.

"I need a red hoodie immediately" 😂 "Can you make it up the ramp, E.T.?" You cracked me up 10,000 times during this reaction, often during crying parts. That was such a fantastic reaction. Definitely edit that one down! So happy you got to see Drew! When I think of Drew Barrymore....that's what I think of! No matter how old she gets, she's always going to be Gertie to me! I can't talk about my personal experience with this movie without talking about two other movies you haven't seen yet, Close Encounters and Poltergeist, so I'll just leave it as: FANTASTIC reaction! You're bawling about E.T. face down in a ravine...and still managing to crack a joke about him being on a bender!!!! That's like a magic trick!

Tic Toc Melody

P.S. I actually was in Montreal one Halloween......my impression was you guys do Halloween WAY cooler! Incredible home-made costumes! I remember I saw a kid dressed as Charlie Chaplin! Maybe it's just Montreal, but that's been my line ever since to people: Canada does Halloween cooler. (Buffalo does a wild Halloween also....and they're ALMOST Canada. Maybe it's a northern thing?😂)

Really enjoyed re-watching this after many years. Spielberg says that cinematography shouldn't draw the audience out of a film, but I couldn’t help but notice how patient the camera was with so many beautiful, lengthy shots (like the backyard in the moonlight). I can't recall another blockbuster with such peaceful editing; I think a faster pace would ruin the immersion.

What more can be said about the puppeteering and Henry Thomas' performance? But to me the family drama aspect is just as compelling. The mother is trying her best to suppress her feelings about the separation while her nerves are frazzled from dealing with some mini-emergency every hour. But she clearly adores her children and is delighted by their antics (think of her muffled laugh after “penis-breath”). The writers could have made the older brother a douchebag, but you can tell that he really cares about his siblings (and as the oldest child with the longest history with the father, he empathizes the most with his mother’s situation). But I think Gertie is the hidden MVP. Drew Barrymore’s performance could easily have been the weak link, but instead it’s what elevates this film to the status of a true classic. Apart from the two bicycle scenes, my favorite part is when Gertie is reading off of the TV. Many child actors could have fallen into the trap of being either too cute or smug, but Gertie just nails it. She’s not reading to impress an adult, she’s doing it simply for her own sake to reinforce her knowledge (like she’s “in the zone” or a “flow” state). As we’re watching, we’re so proud of her because we can see her taking a big step towards becoming an independent member of society. The genius of the scene is when Gertie hears E.T. say “Beeee”. Our pride in Gertie is mirrored by Gertie’s pride in E.T., but Gertie’s feelings are much more intense because E.T.’s breakthrough is so unexpected. We can see the excitement in her face as she sees that, by speaking and reading, E.T. is also on his way to becoming a regular member of her family and the community (which makes her having to say good-bye at the end that much sadder). Great choice for your birthday film! (And the best antidote to wipe away the disaster of The Room! 🤣🤣)

I saw this movie when I was a sophomore in college and absolutely loved it then and now. The reactions in a packed theatre mostly of young people when we thought he was dead but then saw the flowers come to life was breathtaking and when he said to Elliott ET phone home, the applause was deafening. Most of us was that many years removed from the teenager in the movie that helped Elliott so we felt right at home. It was quiet the experience for a young person in 1982 and I am so happy you enjoyed it :)

This is the magic of childhood. That’s exactly what this movie represents for me. Before we all grow up, and get scars, and become cynical, self important adults who’ve lost that spark we all once had. I can spend two hours rewatching this to this day, and almost get a tiny bit of that magic spark back, if only for a brief moment. Couldn’t love watching this one moreso with our host. Wonderful wonderful stuff Mrs. Ames. 🥲😭🥲😭☺️
