Super fun way to "kick off the week"!!!

This movie is so much fun and there was so much heart and soul that I wasn't expecting! I really enjoyed this film for it's emotional depth and Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi. He had such a powerful presence and performance. I loved the unconventional friendship that was built and how wonderful it was for Daniel to have a "Male" presence in his life ( something I just forgot to mention in my reaction). I love a good underdog story and the many life lessons learnt on the journey. It's inspiring and heartwarming and I'm glad he got that guy in the end tbh! And the girl hahah! But winning with that "Crane Kick" to the jaw. **Chef's Kiss** Must have felt so good for Daniel!

Let me know your thoughts down below!

As always thanks so much for being here!

The Karate Kid (1984) Watch Along

Fun fact about the ages of the actors at the time of filming, Ralph Machio (Daniel) was 22, William Zabka (Johnny) was 18, Elizabeth Shue (Ali) was 20, and Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi) was 52.

I love Karate Kid 1 and 2. 2 has a great song from Peter Gabriel, Glory of Love... But after 2 my next favorite is the Jackie Chan version. It's really worth watching. Thank you Ames for all your effort on these reactions and letting us join in your experience. 😚

Kane Is Able

Ask Addie to watch The Shining with you. See what she says.

This is literally my childhood. Despite what some say, I love all 3 movies ( but 1 and 2 are the best). When I was a kid it was KK, Back To The Future, and Star Wars. I truly hope you complete the trilogy and then move on to the Cobra Kai TV show, which picks up the story 30 years later.

I always appreciate it when the wheel can break up the heavier watches with something fun like this! As light-hearted as the tone of this one is, the anniversary scene, followed by the birthday party, are the 15 minutes that make this entire movie for me. We get the backstory, Daniel realizing more about who his friend is, a growth of their relationship and a demonstration of how much they've come to mean to one another put together in two scenes with not a lot of dialogue allowed to accomplish that. It hits me every time...but then I always laugh afterwards, because Daniel says he has to run, because he is late meeting his mother on his birthday . He drives away and immediately goes to the arcade to show off his new car to Ali. What happened to going home to your mom, shit for brains?!😂

The internment camps were not provided with adequate medical facilities which is probably why Mr Miyagi's wife died in childbirth. Thousands of young Japanese American men volunteered to fight in WW2 even when their families had lost everything by being forced into the camps. They had to serve in segregated all Japanese units the most well known of which was the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. It fought in Italy and France and became the most decorated unit in the US Army. Mr Miyagi's medal was the Congressional Medal of Honor

Very cool to see you watch for the first time. Could totally tell you were loving it. It's a Daniel-son movie when you're a kid and a Mr Miyagi movie as you get older. Spent the summer of 1984 attempting and dodging crane kicks with my friends. Went trick or treating that Halloween dressed as a shower. Major crush on Elisabeth Shue. We got this in 84 and then Back to the Future and The Goonies in 85. Fell in love with movies.

"Kick off the week" I see what you did there! That Iconic Crane Kick on a stump at sunset is so memorable, I think of it when watching Disney's Hercules animated movie. I think they also did the same nod in Kung Fu Panda (I'm not sure, don't quote me on that) Had a blast revisiting this with your first time reaction. Did NOT know that you're a fellow Canucks fan, that just unlocked a whole new appreciation I have for you. We'll get 'em next year! and the underdog documentary for Netflix will be next level. Back to Karate Kid, I can't remember if it was THIS or Outsiders that made me a fan of Ralph Macchio and back in the 90's there was no IMDB to find out what other movies your favourite actors were in, so when I seen him on the cover of Crossroads, I rented it and had so much late charges they just let me keep it. lol

Whether you continue watching for the channel, or on your own, I highly recommend watching Karate Kid 2 and 3, then dive into the Cobra Kai series, which the show is nothing short of phenomenal!

The second one is my favorite of the sequels. Definitely worth it.

Jeff Mills

Love this movie. The second one is good although not as good as this one. The third one is…meh. LOL After you complete the trilogy you need to check out “Cobra Kai”

It's such fun to watch movies with you, Ames. Thank you. :)

I saw this movie when it was new in the theatres and it was a great experience. The director for this movie was John G. Avildsen, the same person who directed the first Rock movie. Oh a couple points, during WWII "Americans" with Japanese heritage were forced into concentration camps in one of the worst atrocities in American history and that is why Mr, Miyagi's wife and child died, there were few doctors to assist https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internment_of_Japanese_Americans; and while his wife was dying, he was fighting heroically for America in WWII and that medal he received that Daniel read that said valor in the blue ribbon well that was the highest award for heroism the country has, the Medal of Honor, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medal_of_Honor. This demonstrates a little more about the character of Mr. Miyagi!
