Airplane! Watch Along

Looking forward to watching this after work! You're right, these Leslie Nielsen movies have a lot of references to their time for to pop culture, political factions, religious factions, etc. Partly why I love them, but also partly why I love movies even before my time. It's a window into the past that reading history doesn't show you.

Airplane? Surely you can't be serious?

The movie that gave birth to the NAKED GUN series! It broke all the molds. Nobody had seen anything like it. The first parody film basically making fun of the cheesy disaster flicks of the 70s. Not only exposing Leslie Nielsens comedic chops (he was a popular leading man in the 50s) but even better showed us how funny Lloyd Bridges really is! The Zucker brothers predate the Farrelly brothers by 20 years and both share an in your face comedy style… a year later PORKYS was released and quickly became the Holy Grail of comedies for every high schooler who saw it. It’s a bit dated now but still the only movie I ever saw where I lost my voice from laughing ….

One of the best ever reactions to Airplane. Because of what you had written in the "Coming Soon" post, I figured you were going to be stone-faced, or turn against the movie or something. No one gets "all" the jokes; there was one that I just got now in the reaction that I never had noticed before. (can't remember which one right now but I know it happened!). Must have been a fun movie to shoot, right? I like that even the smallest parts get comedy business to do in this movie, even the extras. Thanks for the laughs, Ames!!!! Although there are lots of comedies that I personally love more, I never was in a movie theatre that had more laughs than this one. It was just wall-to-wall laughter because every joke would land with at least a portion of the audience.

Nobody notices that the planes engine sound is from a prop plane even though the plane has jet engines. It just flies under the radar so to speak. I haven't seen a single reactor who knows Ethel Merman. She was one of the biggest Broadway stars and she also acted in movies. In this short cameo she sang one of her famous songs Everything's Coming Up Roses form the musical Gypsy. Ethel was apparently thrilled about her appearance in the film. She had a good sense of humor and it introduced her to a whole new audience. Peter Graves (the pilot) was in the original tv series Mission Impossible that started that franchise. He like Nielsen and Robert Stack were originally great dramatic actors. Their deadpan delivery is just so fantastic. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had some eye issues so he used to play with those goggles on. Absolutely love Lloyd Bridges. He is just so great in this and the Hot Shots movies. Johnny played by Stephen Stucker is perhaps the one thing that has aged most badly about of this movie. The plane that had a beard was Air Israel. There are so many jokes in this movie that if not all of them land for the viewer the next one comes up. It's amazing how many they were able to fit in one movie.

you missed the end, the guy in the taxi at the end of the credits

Ok, let's see... When the lady asked for some light reading, the stewardess gave her a small pamphlet of Famous Jewish Sports Stars because it's well known that Jews in general are not inclined to enter and excel in the world of athletics. They might OWN the teams, but play? Nahhhh.... The lady that could "speak jive" was funny because that was Barbara Billingsley, the actress that played the mom Mrs. June Cleaver in the old wholesome white suburbia sitcom "Leave It To Beaver", that ran from '57 - '63. She's the last person you'd expect to see talking jive with a couple bros. The pep talk that Leslie Nielsen gave to Ted that ended with "win one for the Zipper" was a takeoff on the film "Knute Rockne" where a speech was given to a football team to "win one for the Gipper. Ronald Reagan played George Gipp in the movie; his nickname was 'the Gipper'. Ted Stryker's friend who died in the war was George Zipp. The lady who thought to herself, "Funny, Jim never asks for a second cup of coffee at home" was from a tv commercial for Yuban coffee. When Jim starts puking she thinks to herself, "Funny, Jim never vomits at home", as if that also undermines her sense of being a good homemaker! You can find the commercials on YouTube. One joke which really shows how times have changed (not necessarily for the better), was when the one lady said, "I'm 26, and I'm not married!" Those were the days when if a woman wasn't married by about 23, she was considered an "old maid"! This may be the first movie that ever had a post-credits scene. I hope you saw it; if not, now you know! Cheers! 🍻 ✌🏻 👏🏻

If you ever want to watch a dramatic version, Airplane! is a comedic remake of a film in the 1950's called Zero Hour! The entire story of Zero Hour! and pretty much all of the story beats are exactly the same in Airplane! In both movies, Ted Stryker is the name of the hero. Almost every character in Zero Hour! can be found in Airplane! and scenes and entire lines of dialogue were lifted from there too. The writer-directors of Airplane! bought the script and story rights to Zero Hour! to protect themselves from getting sued. You can watch a side-by-side comparison of the two movies here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-v2BHNBVCs Surely, everyone can see that Airplane! is a complete remake!

That was fun! Great to see you watch a comedy. Hope there are more coming. I was 2 when this came out and probably didn't see it until the 2000s after I'd seen the Naked Gun movies and Hot Shots. It's cool to watch the origin of it all. Not the funniest for my sense of humor but definitely a lot of laughs per minute. Do you watch any stand up? Favorite current comedians?

John Courtright

Definitely a wacky film, Ames! I'd seen it before but it was fun to watch it again with you! "Alright everybody, get in crash positions". 😂 (I love how you hold your head when things are over the top!) Julie Hagerty who played Elaine in the movie plays a similar adorable character in the hilarious Bill Murray film, "What About Bob?" (1991).

The scene where Robert Stack is beating up all those people in the terminal asking for donations pokes fun at how irritating it used to be at the airport where people actually approached you for donations to charities and religious affiliations...yes, even the Hare Krishna's. It happened to me personally many years ago.

The guy waiting in the taxi cab was real life Republican Congressman Howard Jarvis from California. He was very popular at the time when his tax reform bill Proposition 13 passed. He even made the cover of Time magazine.

Andrew Roach

Lloyd Bridges is the father of the great Jeff Bridges. Some of my favorite comedies: Borat, 2006 Dr. Strangelove, 1964, despite genre Kubrick makes legendary films Fargo, 1996, one of the Coen's best liked films Hangover, 2009, watch the end credits, funny beyond words Hot Fuzz, 2007 Monty Python and The Holy Grail, 1975, wacky but in its own way Napolean Dynamite, 2004, very unique style and watch the post credit scene, its big Office Space, 1999

Bro that traffic control guy " it's a twister it's a twister"🤣🤣🤣

Hilarious movie. As noted in a comment above, Kareem did wear goggles on the court (he had suffered repeated eye injuries). As a young kid, I knew him as "Lew Alcindor" when he played for the Milwaukee Bucks. He then changed his name and went to play for the L.A. Lakers. One of the greatest basketball players of all time. I agree that you should watch Saturday Night Fever. I know you will at some point. That movie is part of our culture. In high school in the late 1970's in the midst of the reaction to Saturday Night Fever, we made fun of disco and the John Travolta character dress/dance moves (but also secretly liked some disco and knew that Travolta could freaking dance).

Jeffrey Schmidbauer

I was so sad when Kareem Abdul-Jabbar left the Bucks but not before he gave them an NBA Championship and almost gave them a second one.

Johnny, the crazy airport guy was my favorite character. This is the type of movie you have to see to notice all the little things you missed the previous times. Like did you notice all the mayonnaise jars behind the doctor at the Mayo clinic? Everybody seems to zoom in on the bouncing heart. And every time you see the jet airplane or hear it's engines, it's propeller sounds? Sometimes, you're laughing at one joke and and half the second one is already gone by. That's why it takes several times watching it to catch everything. One of the great comedies! Leslie Nielsen played the heavy for years and years until he started into comedy. You should check out the TV series Police Squad. They only made around 13 episodes, but they're hilarious!

I just watched this last week, I guess I choose the wrong week to stop sniffing glue. Since you have seen Top Gun, I think you might get a kick out of Hot Shots which is another spoof movie was written and directed by one of the directors of Airplane!.
