Hello my friends! I hope all my American buddies had a wonderful 4th of July wherever you were!

Holy crap! This movie is outstanding! The cinematography was 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽. Really, everything about this film was amazing: the acting, direction, set, hair and makeup, casting! Whew! I cannot believe how meticulous this set was! The trenches were incredible. Roger Deakins has done it again, making this film so vibrant with the tones and composition of the shots. He’s a master.

NOTE

I’m sorry for the sound issues, guys! Ever since updating OBS, I can’t trust the darn thing! This time, my audio was chopping in and out, so I apologize—mostly in the outro. I have researched so much on it and will continue to do so. I went for so long without major issues, and now I’m becoming frustrated. I guess Macs are notorious for having issues with OBS, but until now, I was fine. My Mac is great, strong, and powerful. Haha. I might try to go back to an older version of OBS or keep doing workarounds. So keep your fingers crossed for me for future watch-alongs!

Let me know all your thoughts on this incredible movie!

Xx

What an amazing film! In an interview, Director Sam Mendes talked about the "one-shot" concept for 1917. "I wanted to tell this story in two hours of 'real time.' So I felt like it was a natural thing, to lock the audience into the men’s experiences. In a movie that operates more like a ticking-clock thriller at times, I wanted an audience to feel every second passing and take every step with them, and also be aware of geography and distance and physical difficulty. The feeling that you are going to have to live through the story with them is accentuated by not cutting." I can't wait to see your reaction, Ames! (Alas, after work. 😅)

Perhaps use a separate recorder where you can plug your microphone in. They're not to expensive. Then just add the audo file as an extra audio layer in the edit. Bypass the Mac altogether. Not to add on the mic misery, but I have noticed quite some ambient noise, which becomes apparent when you are silent. I think maybe playing around with the gain and distance might help or other settings like your mic direction. Thanks for putting all the effort into the production side though. 😀

Great reaction to an even greater Film Ames.. Your technical observations were spot-on! It's been exciting watching your Cinema IQ increase dramatically in just the last year. Incidentally? Try sleeping in the fetal position with a thick body pillow wedged between your knees. Will help keep your sciatic from reoccurring... 👍

You know you're in for a powerful score when Thomas Newman is the composer. Definitely my favourite movie composer! If you want to see another Sam Mendes film with a powerful Newman score and amazing cinematography I recommend Road To Perdition. Probably one of the most beautifully shot films i've ever seen!

I had heard about this film for years and was curious to see how the one-shot concept would be used to show a war. Overall I think it was a successful and daring experiment, and I appreciate the hard work (four months of rehearsals), careful planning, and intricate production design that made this story come to life. The first sequence (until the room with the maps) was a real powerhouse -- I was amazed at how long they could walk through those trenches uninterrupted! (SPOILERS)

Excellent reaction. Good observations/comments. WWI trench warfare was grim. I liked your outro. I knew nothing about this movie in advance of my first watch that I did not fully appreciate. Yet, on my second watch, I was blown away. Engrossing. Immersive. This was my third or fourth watch with your reaction.
